Before BIC Cristal’s launch in 1950, pens were a luxury item, retailing at around $150 – a price completely out of reach for most ordinary people. But Marcel Bich’s design absolutely changed the game. Taking inspiration from an earlier design by László Bíró, he utilized state-of-the-art Swiss watchmaking machines to mass-produce stainless steel balls, and opted for a simple, clear plastic barrel to produce a pen that could be sold for just $2. All he needed to do now was drop the ‘H’ from his name, and one of the most iconic global brands was born! It’s not just Bich’s design that’s impressive. Perhaps his real legacy should be the impact his pen had on literacy rates. In the decades after the BIC Cristal was introduced, literacy rose from 33% to an incredible 90%. Not bad for an ‘ordinary’ pen!

Daria and Kiril met in 2019. Both studied film because they believe that images can tell the truth. The footage, which was clearly intended to be part of a production of some sort, was originally shot with sound — but unfortunately that element has now been lost. The film provides an extraordinary look at Louis Armstrong making what might be his first appearance in Las Vegas circa 1954. Armstrong was the headliner for a show that partnered him with Metropolitan Opera star Robert Merrill. It was called "High Hat and Low Down" and initially ran at the Sands Hotel for two weeks -- but then was so popular that it became a seasonal act that ran for at least three years. Appearing with Armstrong was his "all star" Satchmo All Star Band and singer Velma Middleton, and (at least in 1956 or 57) Natalie & The Beachcombers, the Copa Girls and the Antonio Morelli Orchestra. The show was produced by Jack Entratter, who initially raised eyebrows by bringing together Merrill and Armstrong to share the top billing, but according to a review, "...this unique combination of opera and jazz was a hit with even the most jaded audiences on its opening night." The lively show was full of good humor and interspersed with comedic segments. Some of the songs that were part of the set list included "Granada" (typically the opening song) and the spirituals "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen", "Joshua Fit' the Battle of Jericho", "Return to Sorrento" and "On the Street Where You Live". He also performed opera standards such as the Toreador Song from "Carmen" and Figaro’s aria from "Barber of Seville". Armstrong was said by a reviewer to be in "top form" performing "Sleepy Time Down South". The Satchmo & His All Stars band in 1957 included Billy Kyle, piano; Trummy Young, trombone; Edmond Hall, clarinet; Barrett Deems, drums; and Dale "Deacon" Jones, bass. Some of the jazz setlist included "Back Home In Indiana," "Faithful Huzzar," "Stompin’ at the Savoy", "Mop Mop," "Perdido" (performed by the rhythm section). The show wrapped up with Velma Middleton belting out "Mama's Back In Town," followed by some hilarious gyrations and a duo with Armstrong on "Kokomo." Note: Velma Middleton sang with Louis Armstrong's big bands and small groups from 1942 until her death. Jack Entratter, nicknamed "Mr. Entertainment", is best known for management positions at the Copacabana nightclub in New York City in the 1940s and early 1950s, and at the iconic Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas from the early 1950s. He is closely associated with Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack in the history of Las Vegas. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. Een Amsterdamse variant van de Eiffeltoren, een deel van een boorplatform, of toch een nieuw kunstwerk? Sinds kort siert de skyline van Noord een enorm verlicht bouwwerk, maar wat is het nou eigenlijk? Het antwoord op deze vraag blijkt te halen bij Damen Shiprepair, de scheepswerf in Noord. Het gaat om een schip met een 208 meter hoge kraan. Vooral 's avonds is het schip veelvuldig het onderwerp op sociale media in Noord. Het is 58 meter langer dan het hoogste punt van de stad, de Rembrandttoren. Vanuit Tuindorp Oostzaan verlicht het schip en de kraan bijna de hele wijk. De ene Noorderling is enthousiast: "Gezellig hoor die lichtjes, net Kerstmis!", de ander vindt het 's nacht wel een beetje lastig. "Als ik ga slapen moet ik de luxaflex dichtdoen, anders schijnt het licht recht in mijn ogen." De kraan staat op het 195 meter lange schip dat windmolens op zee installeert. Bij Damen Shiprepair wordt het schip afgebouwd om windmolens te kunnen vervoeren en te bouwen op zee. "Het is de Windmover, vertelt Rick Lust, die projectleider is van de werkzaamheden. "Het is een installatieschip voor windturbines op de Noordzee.   Naast de kraan van 208 meter hoog heeft het schip ook vier gekartelde staalconstructies van zo'n honderd meter. Rick Lust: "Dat zijn de poten van het schip die worden aangedreven door 24 motoren per poot, zodat het schip stabiel op de zeebodem staat." De kraan kan zo de onderdelen hijsen voor de installatie van de windturbines. Het duizenden tonnen wegende schip ligt nu 18 meter boven het wateroppervlak vanwege de werkzaamheden. De constructies die hier zijn gebouwd om de windmolen onderdelen op te vervoeren zijn ook niet de lichtste. Deze weegt 170 ton en de grote die komende week op het schip wordt gehesen weegt 270 ton. The latest film from the writer and director Clint Bentley, “Train Dreams,” is nominated for four Oscars, including best adapted screenplay. The movie is based on Denis Johnson’s 2011 novella of the same name and tells the story of Robert Grainier, a logger in the Pacific Northwest, in stream-of-consciousness, nonlinear prose. This week, Gilbert Cruz talks with Bentley, who wrote the screenplay with Greg Kwedar, his longtime collaborator, about how he went about translating Johnson’s work into a visual medium. Bentley first read “Train Dreams” just after college, long before he ever thought of making it into a movie. Rigoureus snijden in het ambtenarenapparaat en soepelere wet- en regelgeving voor ondernemers in de stad. Dat is wat de Libertaire Partij in haar verkiezingsprogramma heeft staan. In aanloop naar de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen gaat AT5 op de koffie bij lijsttrekkers, met vandaag: Peter van der Helm in zijn tattooshop aan de Prins Hendrikkade. Het is de zomer van 2013 als Van der Helm zijn eerste tattooshop in de stad opent. Nu, zestien jaar later, zegt hij zijn omgeving niet meer te herkennen: "Zelfs de wijkagent wordt nu elke zes maanden verwisseld". De ondernemer, die naar eigen zeggen door toenemende regeldruk vanuit de gemeente meerdere zaken heeft moeten sluiten, pleit voor een drastische verlaging van gemeentelijke belastingen en vooral voor een forse inkrimping van het ambtenarenapparaat. "Wat mij betreft moeten er gewoon een groot aantal ontslagen vallen. Als ik ondernemersrisico heb, moet er ook maar een ambtenarenrisico zijn." Peter van der Helm, lijsttrekker Libertaire Partij In Amsterdam werken momenteel ruim 18.000 ambtenaren in vaste dienst. Volgens Van der Helm kan de gemeente miljarden besparen door het apparaat te verkleinen en taken te schrappen. Tegelijkertijd leven naar schatting zo’n 60.000 Amsterdammers op of onder de armoedegrens. Zij zijn in verschillende mate afhankelijk van gemeentelijke ondersteuning. Op de vraag of deze groep erop achteruitgaat bij stevige bezuinigingen, is Van der Helm duidelijk: "Ik vind dat een hele rare vergelijking. Waar ik het over heb, is dat we geld gaan besparen, dan hebben we meer over voor die mensen. Die ambtenaren moeten eens gaan begrijpen dat ze het geld inpikken van die arme mensen. Dat is er aan de hand." "Wat mij betreft moeten er gewoon een groot aantal ontslagen vallen. Als ik ondernemersrisico heb, moet er ook maar een ambtenarenrisico zijn." Van der Helm, die zelf ook eens met een kettingzaag op het Binnenhof heeft geposeerd, verwijst daarbij regelmatig naar de Argentijnse president Javier Milei. De markante politicus heeft sinds zijn aantreden fors gesneden in overheidsuitgaven van het Latijns-Amerikaanse land en zelfs complete ministeries opgeheven. Die koers levert hem internationaal zowel lof als kritiek op. Ook in Amsterdam wil de Libertaire Partij het gemeentelijk apparaat drastisch verkleinen en de overheid terugbrengen tot wat zij zien als kerntaken. D66, GroenLinks, Denk en De Vonk eisen via schriftelijke vragen opheldering van het college over de onjuiste cijfers rond geweld tegen handhavers. Vandaag bleek dat de gemeente een forse vergissing heeft gemaakt: niet 8 op de 10, maar 4 à 5 op de 10 boa's kregen te maken met fysiek geweld. De vier partijen betwijfelen daarom of een proef met een wapenstok, gebaseerd op de hoge cijfers, moet worden verlengd. Jarenlang was het beeld opvallend zorgelijk: het aantal geweldsincidenten tegen handhavers bleef maar toenemen. In 2024 begon de gemeente met een proef waarbij een deel van de handhavers werd uitgerust met een wapenstok. Nu blijkt dat de proef is gebaseerd op onjuiste cijfers. Onderzoeker Jaïr Schalkwijk, werkzaam bij burgerrechtenorganisatie Controle Alt Delete, kreeg een aantal jaar geleden argwaan en dook in het registratiesysteem. "Het was zo ingericht dat een melding van agressie automatisch als een melding van fysiek geweld werd geregistreerd." Na een correctie bleek het aantal boa's dat te maken kreeg met fysiek geweld ongeveer de helft lager te zijn. Maar burgemeester Halsema noemt het in een brief aan de raad 'nog steeds een substantieel hoog aantal, dat mede de aanvraag van de wapenstok lijkt te rechtvaardigen'. Het levert het college felle kritiek op van GroenLinks en D66, die in 2022 sowieso al tegenstander waren van de wapenstok voor handhavers, en Denk en De Vonk. Zo werpen de cijfers volgens GroenLinks-fractievoorzitter Imane Nadif een ander licht op de proef en zijn ze volgens Rob Hofland van D66 een stok geworden om mee te slaan. "Als je het geweldsmonopolie dat alleen ligt bij het leger en de politie uitbreidt naar handhavers op basis van cijfers, dan moeten die cijfers kloppen. En die kloppen niet. Dan denk je: hoe kan dit gebeuren?" VVD nuanceert fout Daan Wijnants (VVD) vindt dat sommige partijen de fout rond de cijfers nu ten onrechte inzetten om handhavers te ontwapenen. "Al was het 1 op de 10 geweest: dan nog steeds moeten we onze boa's waarderen en veilig houden." Ook Ruud Kuin van de boa-bond vindt dat de gecorrigeerde cijfers een wapenstok rechtvaardigen. "Vraag het aan een willekeurige boa en dan hoor je dat die wel eens met geweld of agressie te maken heeft gehad. De wapenstok is nodig voor handhaving; het is onmogelijk om in te grijpen zonder." Vrees dat boa's de stok dan ongerechtvaardigd inzetten, hoeft er volgens Kuin niet te zijn. "Ze krijgen gewoon een training van twee jaar, net als de politie er een training voor krijgt." De pilot met korte wapenstok is in december beëindigd en wordt nu geëvalueerd. De eigenaren van de webshop Funcaps konden jarenlang ongestoord designerdrugs en namaakmedicijnen verkopen. Afgelopen november kwam aan het licht dat mogelijk meerdere mensen zijn overleden na het gebruik van die middelen. Het Openbaar Ministerie onderzoekt 58 verdachte sterfgevallen. Uit onderzoek van Nieuwsuur blijkt nu dat de Inspectie Gezondheidszorg en Jeugd (IGJ), die toeziet op de illegale handel van geneesmiddelen, al in 2020 de eerste melding over Funcaps van de politie ontving. In de loop der jaren kwamen er nog meer meldingen binnen. Toch duurt het sinds die eerste melding nog 5 jaar voordat de website offline wordt gehaald en de eigenaren worden opgepakt. Filipino Siopao Asado Ingredients Asado filling 500g pork belly, diced 3 cloves garlic, smashed 1 brown onion, finely chopped 2 tbsp peanut oil Sea salt 60ml (¼ cup) soy sauce 60ml (¼ cup) hoisin sauce 2 tbsp caster sugar 1 tbsp oyster sauce 250ml (1 cup) chicken stock 2 bay leaves 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper 1tbsp cornflour (cornstarch) 40ml (2 tbsp) water Dough 500g (3⅓ cups) plain flour 60g caster sugar 7g (2¼ tsp) dry yeast 1 tsp baking powder 250ml (1 cup) warm water 2 tbsp peanut oil Method Step 1: Cook the filling Finely dice the pork belly and set aside. Finely chop the garlic and brown onion. Heat the oil in a heavy based saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the onion, season with some salt and cook for 2 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for a further minute. Increase the heat to high and add the pork. Cook, stirring, for 6-8 minutes, until browned. Add the soy sauce, hoisin, oyster sauce, sugar, chicken stock and bay leaves. Season with the black pepper and stir well to combine. Bring to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer gently for 40 minutes, until the pork is tender. Stir in the cornflour slurry and cook for 2 minutes, until thick. Transfer the mixture to a bowl or tray and set aside to cool. Step 2: Make the dough Combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and baking powder in the bowl of a stand mixer with the dough hook attachment. Add the water and oil, then mix on low speed until it comes together as a shaggy dough. Increase the speed to medium low and knead for 5 minutes, until a soft dough forms. Transfer to a lightly oiled bowl, cover and set aside to rise until doubled, about 1 hour. Step 3: Fill the buns Turn the dough out onto a clean surface and divide evenly into 15 portions. Roll each into a smooth round, then flatten out with a small rolling pin to about 12cm (4.7in) wide Place a tablespoonful of cooled pork filling in the centre of each round. Pull up the sides and pleat to seal in a circular pattern. Place each bun on a small square of baking paper and place in a large bamboo steamer, with a little space in between each to allow for spreading. Step 4: Steam and serve Place a wok half filled with water over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Place the bamboo steamer with the lid on over the water. Steam the buns for 15 minutes until puffed and cooked through. Remove from the heat and rest the buns for 5 minutes before opening the lid. Serve hot!
