In de RAI is de jaarlijkse consumentenbeurs, de Huishoudbeurs, weer begonnen. Duizenden bezoekers komen van over het hele land om producten te kopen, workshops te volgen of zelfs tattoos te zetten. Met ruim 300 stands is er voor ieder wat wils en het aanbod loopt flink uiteen. Bezoekers struinen langs kraampjes met praktische huishoudspullen zoals wc-borstels of wasmiddel, maar ook langs stands met ontbijtgranen, zoete likeurtjes en zelfs speeltjes voor volwassenen. "FEBO is eigenlijk onze stand en dan gaan we daaromheen even loeren wat ze allemaal hebben." En wie denkt dat het evenement alleen vrouwen trekt, zit ernaast. Ook mannen zijn goed vertegenwoordigd. De één nieuwsgierig en enthousiast winkelend, de ander geduldig wachtend met een stapel tassen in de hand. Inside was a woman from around 168 BC that was remarkably well preserved, with traces of blood still in her veins. We still don’t know exactly how it was done, but it’s a surprising contrast to one of the most well-known methods of mummification. By comparison, Egyptian mummification is a very specific process of embalming. Both methods have taught us so much about a world long past, from the diets to the diseases that plagued ancient cultures. The difference? Vandaag, op 22 februari, is het precies 128 jaar geleden dat activist en verzetsstrijder Anton de Kom werd geboren. In de Bijlmer organiseerde The Black Archives daarom een speciale avond om zijn nagedachtenis te herdenken. Daar was te merken dat de in 1945 overleden de Kom nog altijd iets losmaakt. Dat is te merken als de 16-jarige Blessing een brief aan Anton de Kom voordraagt en vanaf het begin het niet droog weet te houden. "Voor een deel omdat ik een beetje zenuwachtig was", vertelt ze daar later op de avond over. "Maar ook omdat het pijn doet. Zonder ons was Nederland niet wat het nu is. Dat wij dan nu nog een beetje achterlopen, doet pijn. Dat gevoel leeft bij heel veel mensen, maar bij mij kwam het er nu even uit." En juist dat gevoel onderstreept voor veel mensen dat het werk van Anton de Kom nog altijd relevant is. Dat vindt ook Nikita Krouwel, die de bijeenkomst namens The Black Archives organiseerde. Hoe hij dat voor elkaar kreeg? "Het is een combinatie", aldus Krouwel. "Hij had een vlijmscherpe pen. Maar hij wist ook mensen te inspireren en te organiseren." "Voor de Kom maakte het niet uit of je een Javaan, Hindoestaan, creool of Antilliaan was", zegt rapper en schrijver MC Lost. "Hij vond dat we onder de Surinaamse vlag allemaal één waren." Schrijver, dichter en verzetsstrijder De Kom werd in Paramaribo geboren en emigreerde toen hij 22 was naar Nederland. Hij werd hier schrijver en dichter en zette zich in de loop der jaren als activist in voor burgerrechten van Surinamers. In 1934 bracht hij het inmiddels beroemde Wij Slaven van Suriname. Een boek dat onder meer over racisme en kolonialisme gaat. De Kom was in die jaren teruggekeerd naar Suriname, op dat moment nog een kolonie van Nederland, maar werd daar gearresteerd door de Nederlandse autoriteiten, die vreesden dat De Kom in Suriname breed verzet zou aanwakkeren. In 2023 brood het kabinet hier excuses voor aan. Later, toen de Tweede Wereldoorlog was uitgebroken, sloot De Kom zich aan bij een Nederlandse communistische verzetsgroepering. In 1944 werd De Kom gearresteerd. Hij zat vervolgens in meerdere concentratiekampen en overleed uiteindelijk op 47-jarige leeftijd in Kamp Sandbostel, aan de gevolgen van tuberculose. Nalatenschap Veel van de aanwezigen zijn het erover eens: sinds Anton de Kom, is de positie van Surinamers blijvend verbeterd. Toch valt er volgens hen nog steeds een wereld te winnen. "Heel veel van de dingen waar hij tegen vocht, zijn er nog steeds, al is het misschien in andere gedaantes", zegt Krouwel. "Kolonialisme, kapitalisme, fascisme... The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is facing massive criticism due to its official online shop selling a T-shirt with a design from the 1936 Olympics. That event was hosted in Berlin, where Germany’s N4zi regime deliberately used the games for propaganda purposes. And that’s the reason for the debate: can you really use such a controversial motif for commercial merchandise today? What’s more: in a “Heritage Collection” of clothes intended to celebrate Olympic history? What’s interesting is that a number of traditions that are now central to each Olympics actually originated in 1936. Berlin hosted the first ever torch relay, for example. While today the torch is seen as a symbol of peace and international unity, it was at the time part of a politically motivated spectacle. Critics say that selling such imagery without its full context is insensitive and problematic. The IOC insists it is aware of the background and sees the T-shirt simply as part of a historical collection. Het gaat hard met de Amsterdamse band Honey I'm Home. Drie maanden geleden kwam hun debuutsingle uit, begin dit jaar werden ze tot beste act van muziekfestival Noorderslag uitgeroepen en volgende maand vliegen ze al naar Amerika om daar naam te maken. Maar voordat het zover is spelen ze vanavond in eigen stad, een thuiswedstrijd in een uitverkocht Paradiso. "I cant wait", zegt zanger en gitarist Thom Schotanus tijdens de soundcheck over het optreden vanavond van zijn band Honey I'm home. "Maar ook een beetje spannend", vult zangeres en gitarist Sofie Ooteman aan.  Thom en Sofie leerden elkaar kennen via Tinder. Het werd geen match in de liefde, maar het was absoluut raak op muzikaal gebied. "Thom is een hitmachine", vertelt Sofie glunderend. "Dan stuurt hij weer iets op, maar dan heb ik het vorige vaak nog niet eens beluisterd." Thom: "Sofie is kritisch, weet meteen of iets echt cool is of niet en heeft een hele goeie smaak." Shoegaze Shoegaze, heet de muziek die Honey I'm Home maakt. Een muziekstijl die in de jaren 90 opkwam met bands als The Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana en The Pixies. Vanavond trappen ze hun tour af op de plek waar ze zelf hun grote idolen hebben gezien. "Hoe we ons succes verklaren? Hard werken", zegt Sofie.
