Hoewel hij de - voor hem zo begeerde - wereldtitel nooit won, hoorde hij in de jaren 80 en 90 tot de absolute wereldtop. Dat leverde hem de bijnaam 'The best of the West op.' Timman werd op 14 december 1951 geboren in Amsterdam, als zoon van twee wiskundigen. Al op jonge leeftijd ontwikkelde hij een liefde voor schaken en bleek hij ook talent te hebben. Op zijn veertiende sleepte hij zijn eerste prijs binnen: hij werd Nederlands kampioen bij de junioren tot twintig jaar. Vervolgens schreef hij in totaal negen keer het landelijke schaakkampioenschap op zijn naam. In de jaren 80 en 90 behoorde hij tot de absolute wereldtop. Hij kreeg de bijnaam Best of the West, omdat hij na de Russen Anatoli Karpov en Garry Kasparov werd gezien als de sterkste schaker ter wereld. In 1982 bereikt hij de tweede plaats op de wereldranglijst. Tot zijn spijt heeft hij die nummer 1-positie nooit behaald. Verrassing op NK 2024 In 2024 nam hij als 72-jarige nog deel aan het NK, maar liefst 55 jaar na zijn debuut, om het jaar daarop bekend te maken dat hij stopte als wedstrijdschaker. Voorafgaand aan die wedstrijd vindt er een grote sfeeractie van Ajax-fans plaats met veel vuurwerk. Deze werkdag begint voor een deel van de ruiters om half twaalf in de ochtend, als de eerste paarden klaargemaakt worden. Dat gebeurt in een stal van de politie die in de buurt van de A10 Zuid staat. Het is het bureau van de bereden politie, waar tussen de 20 en 25 Amsterdamse politiepaarden verblijven. "We hebben eigen dierenverzorgers in dienst", legt Wim, commandant van de bereden politie uit. "Zij zorgen overdag en 's avonds dat onze paarden alles krijgen wat ze nodig hebben. Dat gaat van voeding tot medicatie en andere verzorging. Je zou misschien denken, zielig, de paarden staan de hele dag hier. Maar dat is absoluut niet het geval. Onze paarden gaan elke dag naar buiten. We hebben een stapmolen waar ze beweging krijgen en daarnaast hebben we veel weidegrond en zandgrond buiten." In totaal zijn er vandaag 24 paarden actief, waarvan een deel uit andere regio's is gekomen. Het gaat om drie groepen van elk acht paarden. In politietaal: de Papa10, Papa20 en Papa30. De eerste groep blijft in het centrum en de andere twee groepen staan later vandaag bij de Arena. "Ik vind dit zelf de leukste diensten", zegt een van de ruiters die in de binnenstad surveilleert. "Er is een hoop te zien en een hoop te doen." De paarden trekken veel bekijks. "Dat is altijd zo", vertelt de ruiter. "Zodra we ergens stil gaan staan, dan komen mensen bij ons en foto's maken. We zeggen altijd, als we voor elke foto een euro krijgen zouden we niet meer hoeven te werken." Omdat de driehoek van burgemeester, politie en justitie rekening houdt met een verstoring van de openbare orde is er een veiligheidsrisicogebied ingesteld rond de Johan Cruijff Arena. De paarden staan mede vanwege het verwachte (knal)vuurwerk rond 18.00 uur ook op een flinke afstand, maar dat geldt niet voor het ME-busje waar de paardencommandanten in zitten. Ropa Vieja Ingredients 1kg (2.2 Lbs) navel end brisket or beef flank steak sea salt, to season 1 tbsp olive oil 2 brown onions 1 green capsicum (bell pepper) 1 red capsicum (bell pepper) 4 cloves garlic 2 bay leaves 1 tbsp ground cumin ½ tbsp dried oregano ½ tbsp sweet paprika 20ml white vinegar 2 tbsp tomato paste (tomato puree) 400g can diced tomatoes 300ml beef stock 100g green olives, pitted ½ bunch flat leaf parsley 400g can black beans, rinsed and drained, served on the side Method Step 1: Brown the beef Slice the beef into chunks roughly 5cm x 7cm (2in x 2¾in). Season generously with salt on all sides. Heat the oil in a large Dutch oven or heavy based saucepan over medium-high heat. Cook the beef for 6-8 minutes, turning, until browned on all sides. Transfer to a tray. Step 2: Cook the vegetables Thinly slice the onions and capsicums. Finely chop the garlic. Add the onions to the pan, season with salt and cook for 2 minutes to soften. Stir in the capsicums, add a little more salt and cook for a further 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in the garlic, then the bay leaves, cumin, oregano and paprika. Cook for 1 minute, stirring, until aromatic. Deglaze the pan with the vinegar, then stir in the tomato paste. Add the tomatoes, then fill the can halfway with water and add to the pan. Step 3: Return the beef and cook Return the beef to the pan and pour over the stock. Bring to a simmer, then cover with a tight fitting lid and reduce the heat to low. Cook for 3 hours, until fall apart tender (check the beef after 2½ hours). Remove the beef to a tray and break into smaller strands using tongs. Return to the sauce and mix through thoroughly. Step 4: Finish and serve Finely chop the parsley leaves. Stir the olives and parsley through the beef, then remove from the heat. Serve the beef on a bed of steamed rice with some drained black beans on the side.

De openbare kunst en monumenten in de stad zijn niet representatief genoeg voor alle inwoners en dat moet veranderen, vindt de gemeente. Er wordt gewerkt aan een nieuw beleidskader.  "Ik hoor veel mensen die zeggen: 'Kan het ook wat inclusiever, kan het meer representatief zijn?'", zegt cultuurwethouder Touria Meliani over de huidige kunstwerken en monumenten in de stad. Dat moet veranderen, vindt zij: "Zodat heel veel mensen in deze stad zich ook herkennen in allerlei kunstwerken en monumenten." De gemeente wil nu dan ook dat kunstwerken en (herdenkings-)monumenten een representatiever beeld geven van alle inwoners in de stad. De stad telt op dit moment 1750 kunstwerken en monumenten, maar uit onderzoek blijkt dat veelal vrouwen, mensen met een migratieachtergrond en de regenbooggemeenschap ondervertegenwoordigd zijn.  Het stadscuratorium, dat het college van burgemeester en wethouders advies geeft over kunst in de stad, vindt het een goed idee dat de gemeente anders wil gaan kijken naar de invulling van kunstwerken en monumenten in de stad. "Amsterdam is een mannenbolwerk als je kijkt naar beeld in de openbare ruimte", legt Annemarie de Wildt uit.  "Ik denk dat het belangrijk is voor mensen om zichzelf te kunnen herkennen." Sinds een aantal jaar worden volgens De Wildt vrouwen al meer een meer afgebeeld in kunstwerken en monumenten. Aan de Weesperzijde wijst ze op een monument op een bankje langs de Amstel. "Een geweldig voorbeeld is dit", zegt het lid van het stadscuratorium. "Een klein monumentje voor een vrouw, gemaakt door een vrouw." Beeld Anton de Kom  Mitchell Esajas van The Black Archives is ook te spreken over het besluit van de gemeente om in kunstwerken representatiever te maken. Hij pleit als oprichter van de Black Archives al langer voor een representatief beeld van de Surinaamse schrijver en verzetsheld Anton de Kom in Zuidoost.  "Anton de Kom is een van de grote helden van de Surinaamse en Nederlandse geschiedenis en dan denk ik dat dit beeld onvoldoende eer aan doet", legt hij uit naast het beeld op het Anton de Komplein. "Tijd om de olifant in de kamer te benoemen". Gisteren staakten medewerkers van Jeugdbescherming Amsterdam en Levvel voor betere arbeidsvoorwaarden en een beter salaris. Deze staking sluit de reeks van acht regionale stakingen. Op maandag 2 maart vindt een landelijke 24-uursstaking plaats. Gistermiddag kwamen werknemers van Jeugdbescherming Amsterdam en Levvel samen om hun gemaakte overuren op symbolische wijze te overhandigen aan hun werkgevers. Zij besloten om per gisteren te stoppen met onbetaald overwerken. Tobias Baruch, gezinsmanager bij Jeugdbescherming Amsterdam: "Wij hebben in kaart gebracht hoeveel overuren wij op dagelijkse basis maken en waarvoor wij niet worden gezien of gehoord. Wij overhandigen een puzzel van 1000 stukjes aan de bestuurders om ze ervan bewust te maken dat het voor ons ook een puzzel is om zoveel overuren te maken." De werknemers willen dat hun werkgever nu de puzzel gaat leggen voor een betere cao. "De kans om overuren te verminderen hebben wij niet", zegt Baruch. Er zijn nog meer punten waar de werknemers tegenaan lopen: "Naast hoge werkdruk, vele overuren en ziekteverzuim hebben wij ook last van het feit dat de salarissen achterlopen in vergelijking met andere organisaties. Wij geven heel duidelijk aan dat dit onze limiet is." "Wij verwachten van de bestuurders van Jeugdzorg Nederland dat ze op korte termijn teruggaan naar de onderhandelingstafel", vertelt Baruch. "Gezinnen merken ook dat de administratieve zaken wat achter gaan lopen. Een concreet alternatief is dat de salarissen omhooggaan en dat onze veiligheid op de werkvloer wordt vergroot." Bestuurders van de Jeugdbescherming en Levvel reageren niet zoals gehoopt. "Op dit moment is het antwoord 'nee', want dit is niet de juiste plek voor een dialoog." Toch kan Tobias zich wel inleven in de directie: "Ik kan mij voorstellen dat de werkgevers ons een 'Nee' verkopen. Maar ik vind het wel jammer, ik had graag een concreet antwoord gezien." Maaike van der Aar, van het landelijk bestuur van de FNV: "We moeten nu echt kiezen: het behouden van personeel of op deze manier doorgaan met het risico dat er steeds meer medewerkers uit gaan vallen. This year’s 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo aren’t just exciting from a sporting angle. They’re also a full-on pop culture phenomenon and gossip extravaganza. The opening ceremony delivered instant drama, with Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie from Heated Rivalry joining the Olympic torch relay – despite that usually being the privilege of athletes. Things soon swung into romance-gone-wrong territory when Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid used his post-race interview to talk frankly about his relationship crisis – and confess to having cheated on his partner. Meanwhile, a number of gold medals getting broken right after they were awarded also made the headlines. Another viral moment was Spanish figure skater Tomás-Llorenç Guarino Sabaté performing his routine in a Minion outfit. Fans loved it – although he only got the green light for using music from the movie franchise two days before the event. Finally: the Olympic Village running out of condoms has been a running gag for years. This time it took just three days. Apparently the problem was excessive demand.
