While Mardi Gras is commonly attributed to New Orleans, Frenchman Nicholas Langlois began the tradition in Mobile in 1703 -- making this the city's 107th Mardi Gras parade. The parades feature elaborate floats, costumed guests, marching bands and traditions of throwing beads, moon pies and doubloons into the crowd. It grew into a significant cultural event and source of community identity for Mobile. The filmmaker captures the beauty of Mobile’s landscape and architecture comprised of colonial revival style. The girls pose in handmade costumes in the living room (11:08). Their parents join the shot (11:23). Dark footage lit by torch and lantern features the Infant Mystics Parade (11:36). The Infant Mystics brought the electric float to Mobile in 1929. The first doubloons were cast by the Mystics. It is relevant to note, the New Orleans’ Krewe is molded after Mobile’s Mystics. A renaissance knight (11:39) passes shop signs. A mystic under a macabre mask dances atop a float (11:47). Crowds thump over dark streets (11:52). A sign (12:00) announces the arrival of ‘the dragon of the moon’ (12:01). Mystics in ghastly makeup (12:06) toss throws into the crowd. The festival of lanterns (12:16), the magic turtle (12:27), the silk industry float (12:55) and the temple of gates float (13:06) follow. Bij een online veiling is een Pokémonkaart verkocht voor een recordbedrag van bijna 14 miljoen euro. Het gaat om een versie die is uitgegeven in 1998. Van deze specifieke kaart zijn zo'n veertig exemplaren gemaakt, waarvan dit de enige was in een goede staat. We spreken met Pim van Valkengoed. Koningin Máxima was vanmiddag op bezoek bij een daklozenopvanglocatie aan de Transformatorweg. Ze sprak daar met bewoners, de gemeente en verschillende zorginstanties.  Koningin Máxima wordt bij de opvanglocatie in Westpoort ontvangen door wethouder Rutger Groot Wassink (Opvang). De focus tijdens dit werkbezoek ligt op de dakloze EU-burgers in de stad, mensen die vaak naar Nederland komen om te werken, maar om uiteenlopende redenen op straat terechtkomen.  De gemeente laat weten dat er jaarlijks naar schatting 4 à 5000 mensen uit deze groep korte of langere tijd op straat leven. Groot Wassink: "Het is een heel groot probleem. Wij zien dat 80 procent van de buitenslapers voormalig EU-arbeidsmigrant is." Koningin Máxima is er vandaag vooral om te luisteren. Ze spreekt met meerdere bewoners over hun situatie. Ingrida uit Slovenië zit nu zo'n vijf maanden in de opvanglocatie aan de Transformatorweg. Geduldig hoort Máxima haar verhaal aan. "We hebben het gehad over deze plek, over hoe ik hier terecht ben gekomen, en over mijn plannen voor de toekomst," vertelt een emotionele Ingrida achteraf. "Ik was wel een beetje nerveus, ik moet nu echt even bijkomen." Het werkbezoek werd afgesloten met een rondetafelgesprek over de Amsterdamse aanpak van het probleem met dakloze EU-burgers. Aan tafel zaten vertegenwoordigers van de gemeente en verschillende zorg- en opvangorganisaties. Volgens Groot Wassink worden er stappen in de goede richting gezet, maar is er structurele landelijke regie en financiering nodig voor echt duurzame oplossingen. Misschien dat het bezoek van koningin Máxima daar een beetje bij kan helpen. "Ik hoop dat zij ook in de contacten met de Haagse politiek aangeeft, dat dit echt een probleem is. Niet alleen in Amsterdam, maar ook op andere plekken in het land. Voor duizenden Amsterdamse moslims begint deze week de ramadan en dus is het druk bij de supermarkt. Voordat het vasten begint halen moslims die meedoen aan de ramadan vast hun boodschappen in huis. De ramadan staat voor een tijd van bezinning en inkeer. Voor veel moslims betekent de iftar, het breken van het vasten, tijd doorbrengen met familie onder het genot van lekker eten. "Gehakt, vlees voor soep, kotelet, kip en konijn", somt een mevrouw in de rij bij de slager haar boodschappenlijst op. Naar alle waarschijnlijkheid begint de ramadan in de avond van dinsdag op woensdag of, zoals zij het zelf noemt, 'de mooiste maand van het jaar'. En dus is het druk in de supermarkt en slagerij in Osdorp. Want hoewel de ramadan een maand vasten inhoudt, draait het ook vooral om samen eten, zeggen de mensen in de rij. "Je kookt met je hart. Om 6:15 uur eten en je familie komt. Je voelt het van binnen." Dadels Bij de kassa rollen de dozen met dadels over de band. "Het is altijd druk als 'de ramadansfeer' begint", zegt de man achter de kassa. "Zelfs mensen van buiten Amsterdam komen hierheen om hun boodschappen te doen." Op de vraag hoe het is om de vastenmaand in Amsterdam te vieren, reageren de mensen in de supermarkt verdeeld. "In Amsterdam en Utrecht voel je het. Door meer halal-restaurants en meer moslims." Een mevrouw uit Egypte viert het graag thuis, en met familie. "Je voelt het van binnen, of thuis. Bewoners van de Ferdinand Bolstraat werden vanochtend opgeschrikt door een grote brand. Veel buurtbewoners moesten hun woning verlaten, ze werden opgevangen bij een café op de hoek. AT5 sprak met een aantal van hen. De brand ontstond vanmorgen vroeg en duurde ongeveer tot 9.00 uur. Meerdere panden moesten ontruimd worden. "Ik begreep gelijk: het is foute boel", vertelt een bewoner van de Ferdinand Bolstraat. Hij moest uiteindelijk via een achterraam zijn woning verlaten, omdat er te veel rookontwikkeling was in het trapportaal. Café-eigenaar Dennis Kaandorp werd in de vroege morgen gebeld door de schoonmaker. Kaandorp kon iedereen voorzien van een kop koffie. "Iedereen was vrij relaxed", laat hij weten. Twee andere bewoners vertellen dat ze in eerste instantie niet door hadden hoe hevig de brand was. "Ik keek uit het raam en het leek wel heel mistig buiten", vertelt een van de buurtbewoners. De oorzaak van de brand is nog altijd niet bekend. Now 20, Marvin left Germany at the age of just 16. He emigrated with his brother to Hungary – to Budapest, to be precise. Why would a young person leave Germany at such a young age? In Marvin's case there were a range of crucial factors: Germany's COVID policy, concerns about immigration and domestic security, changes in society and what he sees as insufficient national pride. Marvin felt Germany was lacking clear social rules, order, identity and effective laws. And he was searching for freedom during a period impacted by COVID regulations. And Marvin thinks he's found exactly that in Hungary – especially in Budapest: greater safety, a stronger sense of community, conservative values, patriotism and a different concept of state and society. For him, Hungary has become a genuine new home abroad. We met Marvin in the Hungarian capital to talk in depth about his motivations for emigrating, life in Hungary compared to Germany, and also about politics, immigration, security and his outlook for the future. But it quickly became clear that his story is closely linked to his experiences in his native Germany. We therefore met Marvin a second time – this time back in his home village. We'd originally been planning to talk to his family too – but unfortunately things turned out differently. Bij een wasserette op de Ferdinand Bolstraat in de Pijp is vanochtend een grote brand ontstaan. Meerdere hulpdiensten zijn opgeroepen, waaronder een traumahelikopter. Eén brandweerman is met brandwonden aan zijn hand naar het ziekenhuis afgevoerd, en vijf mensen zijn afgevoerd vanwege het inademen van rook. Een misdrijf wordt door de politie uitgesloten. De eerste melding van de brand kwam rond 5.15 uur binnen. Na tien minuten is er opgeschaald naar 'zeer grote brand'. Dat betekent dat er extra eenheden worden opgeroepen. Een woordvoerder heeft laten weten dat mensen die boven en naast het brandende pand wonen, met beschermende maskers tegen rook zijn geëvacueerd. In het pand is de brandweer begonnen met sloopwerkzaamheden aan het plafond om dichter bij de brandhaard te komen. De woordvoerder sprak van een 'korte, heftige brand'. Op de begane grond van het pand is een winkel gevestigd, daarboven zijn woningen. Ook de panden verderop zijn voor de zekerheid ontruimd. Deze mensen worden opgevangen in een café. De oorzaak van de brand is nog niet bekend, maar de politie heeft laten weten dat er vanuit hen geen onderzoek loopt; een misdrijf wordt uitgesloten.
