The battle against data centers is at the heart of a congressional campaign in Tennessee: Democratic state Representative Justin J. Pearson is opposed to the Colossus data centers built by Elon Musk’s xAI in the Memphis area. Pearson is running against Republican state Senator Brent Taylor in Tennessee’s 9th Congressional District, which includes parts of Memphis as well as rural and suburban counties. “Across the 15 counties that I’ve traveled, I’ve yet to meet anyone, including folks who are Republicans who are voting for us, who want data centers,” says Pearson.

Dikran Migdesyan, eigenaar van Karos City Tours, reed dertig jaar lang met zijn paardenkoetsen toeristen rond vanaf de Dam, maar sinds zes jaar verleent de gemeente geen nieuwe vergunningen meer. Na jaren juridische strijd staat Migdesyan nu bij de Raad van State om zijn vergunning terug te krijgen. Drie koetsen heeft hij nog, net als het koetshuis. Maar zijn paarden heeft ondernemer Migdesyan moeten verkopen. Al zes jaar duurt de juridische strijd die hij voert tegen de gemeente Amsterdam, sinds zij besloten geen nieuwe vergunningen meer te verlenen aan bedrijven die toeristen vervoeren, zoals tuk-tuks, fietstaxi's en dus ook zijn koetsiersbedrijf. Migdesyan voert zijn strijd op een aantal punten, waaronder het argument dat fietstaxi's en tuk-tuks meer drukte veroorzaken dan zijn paardenkoetsen. Volgens de ondernemer lijkt het erop dat de gemeente vooral die eerste twee wil verbieden, en zijn paardenkoetsiersbedrijf daar slachtoffer van is geworden. Eerder stapte Migdesyan al naar de rechtbank in Amsterdam, nadat de gemeente had geweigerd zijn vergunningsaanvraag in behandeling te nemen. Toen de gemeente de aanvraag alsnog beoordeelde, maar afwees, wendde hij zich tot de Raad van State. "Het enige wat ze weg hebben gekregen, zijn de drie koetsjes van de Dam", zegt hij na de zitting. "En ik zou als Amsterdammer nog kunnen zeggen: als de drie koetsjes weghalen helpt om Amsterdam beter te maken, dan zou ik het nog slikken en accepteren. Maar dat is natuurlijk niet het geval." De gemeente benadrukt dat zij de verantwoordelijkheid heeft om de drukte in de stad terug te dringen. "Het gaat om het totaalplaatje, en ook om het bewust terugdringen van voorzieningen die met name door toeristen worden gebruikt. En daar was hier wel sprake van." De Raad van State doet naar verwachting over zes weken uitspraak. "Ik probeer niet verbitterd te raken", zegt de ondernemer. Life has “no purpose in mind”. It just happens. But current research, in epigenetics and chaos theory, is revealing a messier reality. Genes and DNA are not just a set of fixed instructions. Their impact depends on whether they are expressed, which depends on the cell environment. Moreover, living systems can generate order internally, without it being the consequence of selection. And while the evolutionary story is getting more complex, it is getting no closer to providing an explanation of consciousness and experience. Should we conclude that evolution is not just a blind process and see life as actively shaping itself? Is consciousness more than a clever biological trick, and a sign that the evolutionary account is inherently limited? Or is it a fundamental mistake to seek to reintroduce purpose into evolution – which risks sneaking cosmic meaning and religion back in when Darwin had shown them to be superfluous? #biology #evolution #darwin Denis Noble is Professor Emeritus of Cardiovascular Physiology at Oxford University.
