Frank, artiestennaam Frank in Person, wijdt al meer dan twintig jaar van zijn leven aan het imiteren van zijn muzikale held Frank Sinatra. Eind februari staat hij samen met een orkest van bijna honderd studenten in het Concertgebouw. Zo'n vijftig jaar nadat de echte Sinatra daar stond. Frank in Person is al meer dan twintig jaar de imitator van zijn muzikale held Frank Sinatra. Dat bracht hem al op veel plekken in de wereld: van de bruiloft van Armin van Buuren tot de verjaardag van Ivanka Trump. Maar op de vraag of dit het grootste optreden van zijn leven is, zegt hij volmondig 'ja'. Dat heeft te maken met de locatie, maar ook met het enorme orkest waar hij mee mag spelen. Het is aan bijna honderd studenten van twee studentenorkesten om de klanken van Sinatra weer in het Concertgebouw te laten klinken. Studenten van het UvA-Orkest J. Pzn Sweelinck spelen voor de gelegenheid samen met de Amsterdamse Studenten Big Band. Nieuwe generatie "Ik speel niet vaak met zo'n groot orkest, vaak met een bigband. Dat bestaat uit veel minder muzikanten. Ik vind het ook prachtig om te zien dat er zoveel jonge mensen bezig zijn met Sinatra", vertelt Frank in Person. Dirigent Dirk Bukkems vult aan: "Dat is ook een belangrijke reden dat ik dit wilde doen: Sinatra overdragen aan de nieuwe generatie. En als ik blikken in het orkest zie, lijkt dat te lukken", lacht hij. It's as efficient as diesel but as clean as gasoline. However, there is a catch. The hidden problem of HCCI is control. Both gasoline and diesel get to decide exactly when combustion occurs. Gasoline engines have full control over the spark plug and Diesel engines have full control over the injection. But HCCI is based around the spontaneous auto-ignition of the air-fuel mixture, which means that it ignites when it ignites. Of course, this means that the point of ignition changes as engine conditions and loads change. Consistent and reliable cold starts are now more problematic. Changing loads are super problematic. We want more fuel in the cylinder to create more power for high loads and we want less fuel in the cylinder to save fuel during cruising. But different air fuel ratios auto-ignite at different times, leading to very unpredictable engine behavior. Ultimately, to control HCCI reliably, we would need to know the exact amount of air and fuel atoms as well as cylinder pressures and temperatures moment by moment as the engine operates in order to reliably control a HCCI engine. Despite all our technology, we are not yet able to do that. That’s why Mazda said, hey, we’ve been thinking about this all wrong. Let’s do HCCI but let’s also keep the control. They called it SPCCI or spark-controlled compression ignition. Everything is nearly the same as HCCI except the spark plug. The engine uses gasoline. It has a 16.3:1 compression ratio which is the same as modern diesels. It also runs at very lean air-fuel mixtures. The spark isn’t used to ignite the entire cylinder. Instead, a very small amount of fuel is injected locally right at the spark plug near the end of the compression stroke. The spark ignites this miniature local fireball and then this mini combustion raises the pressure and temperature of the entire already hot and compressed cylinder to the point that the remaining air and fuel auto-ignite. When running on SPCCI, Mazda’s engines are capable of 30% reduced fuel consumption compared to conventional engines. However, SPCCI is mostly limited to cruising and constant low and medium load scenarios. Stuff like highway driving. In other words, the engine is not capable of running in SPCCI all the time. High load and stop and go traffic it will behave mostly like a conventional gasoline engine. Despite this, it is a crucial breakthrough. It is the worlds frist mass produced engine capable of reliably achieving compression ignition. It is the first real step on the road to full HCCI. Mazda calls these engines Skyactiv-X and this is not news, this engine has been introduced in 2019, it has been on the market for 6 years already. And I’ll be honest with you, when Mazda first introduced this to the market a part of expected they would fail. 16:1 on a gasoline engine, compression ignition, very clever and complicated electronics. It is a complex engine and so I felt that chances were high there’s going to be a big embarrassing recall somewhere down the road. But 6 years later. No recall. In fact, these engines have proven themselves to be reliable. Much more reliable than the vast majority of downsized turbocharged engines employed by nearly all other car manufacturers. Despite this, 6 years after the introduction of this technology none of the other manufacturers have made any attempts to make their own version of it. Mazda has proven that it can be done. They have proven there are benefits. They have proven it can be made reliable. But nobody else has done it or is trying to do it? Why? I’m sure that money isn’t the problem. Mazda is actually a small manufacturer with a R&D budget that is smaller than that of most other big names. Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford, Hyundai and many others all have the R&D and engineers to make their own version of HCCI. I’m sure that some would love to make a less reliable version of it too……. The technology also isn’t prohibitively expensive which is reflected by the reasonable price of Mazda cars equipped with skyactiv x engines. It must be the upcoming EV revolution then? Seems a bit slow for a revolution, as combustion engines still make a very large, very gradually decreasing portion of the market. And there’s no doubt that there would be many benefits in combining spcci engines with various levels of hybridization. It begins with views captured from a boat on the East and Hudson River; two vital water ways, featuring stunning shots of the World Trade Centers, Lady Liberty, Ellis Island, the Staten Island Ferry as well as it’s White Hall Terminal, the Empire State, East River Co-ops, Kips Bay and Turtle Bay neighborhood, South Street Sea Port, Riverside Church, Rockefeller ice rink and a number of the city’s bridges. Ground footage tours Broadway and Chinatown an area on the rise in the 1970’s with a boom in popularity of Szechuan, Hunan and Mandarin cuisine. The 1970’s saw New York in a period of economic crisis as well as cultural rebirth. Super 8 was released in 1965. It opens with Manhattan’s skyline (:01) and the Twin Towers (:15). The White Hall Terminal (3:46), buildings along the tip of lower Manhattan including the Continental Center (3:53) and Castle Williams on Governor’s Island follow. The historic fort was built in the early 1800’s in an effort to protect New York’s inner harbor initially from the Brits. The Brooklyn Bridge appears over the East River (4:02). The bridge; a subject of much art, known for it’s intricate cables and Gothic revival style architecture, connects the four boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Shots of South Street Sea Port feature the permanently docked Wavertree (4:11) and sky scrapers of lower Manhattan’s financial district. Wavertree helped to transform the South Street Sea Port and is today a museum part of the National Register of Historic Places. Manhattan bridge (4:46) connects lower Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn at Canal Street. A dual bridge shot shows the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridge running parallel to one another (4:54). Shots pan over Cooperative Village (5:18) developed in the 1950’s in order to provide affordable housing. The Empire State building (5:36) appears behind Waterside Plaza in Kips Bay neighborhood comprised of four residential towers, a health club and parking garage. The art deco Chrysler building (5:55) stands next to the Metlife building and One Vanderbilt. Close shots sweep traffic on an overpass and the Empire State building (5:57). The UN Secretariat building in Turtle Bay (6:06), Renwick Small Pox Hospital (6:33) on Roosevelt Island, and Hell Gate running parallel to RFK bridge over the East River follow (7:00). Shots pan over lower Manhattan (8:02) showing the Equitable building at 120 Broadway completed in 1915 as the largest office building. It is now an NYC and National Landmark part of Wall Street’s Historic district. The Riverside Church appears in brutal neo-Gothic style erected in 1930 (8:47). Shots from the Hudson pan over to General Grant National monument (8:54). Street angles face 200 Park Avenue North; at the time the Pan Am building (9:52) (later the Met Life building). This was Calloway's 1931 jazz hit, characterized by his signature scat singing ("hi-de-hi-de-ho"), theatrical dancing, and high-energy band performance. It's not clear exactly when this version was filmed, as there is no copyright date shown, but it likely is from the mid-to-late 1940s. "Minnie the Moocher" is a jazz song co-written by Cab Calloway and first recorded in 1931 by Calloway and his big band orchestra, selling over a million copies. "Minnie the Moocher" is famous for its nonsensical ad libbed lyrics, also known as scat singing (for example, its refrain of "Hi de hi de hi de ho"). In performances, Calloway would have the audience and the band members participate by repeating each scat phrase in a form of a call and response, eventually making it too fast and complicated for the audience to replicate. Om 10.00 uur precies zaten vanochtend meer dan 100.000 mensen klaar achter hun laptop of telefoon om een ticket te bemachtigen voor de show van Snoop Dogg, eind deze maand in de Melkweg. Slechts 1400 kaartjes gingen er in de verkoop. De kans dat wij dan net bij iemand gaan filmen die door die enorme wachtrij heen komt, is dan natuurlijk piepklein. Zou je denken, tenminste. Tot ieders verbazing kondigde de Amerikaanse superster Snoop Dogg deze week ineens een concert in Amsterdam aan. Deze maand al, op 26 februari, in de Melkweg. Ook daar zagen ze de show niet aankomen. "Een totale verrassing, superbijzonder", zegt programmeur bij de Melkweg Anna Veenstra. "Begin vorige week kreeg ik een belletje met de vraag of wij The Max (de grote zaal, red.) beschikbaar hadden. En dat was zo. Dus dat is echt een cadeautje." Als de Amsterdamse Laury hoort dat 'Snoop' naar Amsterdam komt, weet ze het zeker: hier moet ik heen. "Hij heeft gewoon zoveel goede nummers", zegt ze als we vanochtend bij haar op bezoek zijn. En dan, om 10.00 uur, is het zover. "Er zijn 1.427 wachtenden voor u", ziet Laury al snel. En dat is hoopvol. Al blijft het heel lang heel spannend. Na een kwartiertje ongeveer is Laury door de wachtrij heen, maar als ze dan daadwerkelijk tickets wil bestellen, blijkt het toch niet gelukt. "Er zijn niet voldoende tickets om aan je vraag te voldoen", leest ze op van haar laptopscherm. "Helaas kunnen er natuurlijk een heleboel mensen niet", zegt Melkweg-programmeur Veenstra daarover. "Maar die paarhonderd mensen die een kaartje hebben weten te bemachtigen gaan iets heel moois meemaken." En net als wij weer weg willen gaan bij Laury, gebeurt er na tientallen keren refreshen iets waar ze zelf ook geen rekening meer mee had gehouden. "Doorgaan naar betalen!" Maar snel daarna: "Nu heb ik er maar één aangeklikt." Echt blij is Laury op dat moment nog niet, omdat ze dolgraag met haar vriendinnen was gegaan. Maar als we haar later op de dag nog even bellen, blijkt dat het besef inmiddels wel een beetje is ingedaald. Dat komt ook doordat ze vrienden heeft gesproken die ook tickets hebben. "Net had ik het nog niet helemaal door, maar nu ik ook gewoon van anderen heb gehoord dat zij ook gaan, voelt het iets meer als werkelijkheid. De invoering van 30 kilometer per uur heeft de verkeerssituatie op de Amstelveenseweg niet veiliger gemaakt, maar juist onveiliger. Dat zeggen bewoners tenminste. Volgens hen wordt er nu vaak nog veel harder dan 50 kilometer per uur gereden. Ze willen dat er een flitspaal wordt neergezet. Volgens de bewoners helpen de borden en de cijfers '30' op het wegdek niet. Sterker nog, de witte cijfers in het midden van de weg zouden er juist voor zorgen dat automobilisten meer aan de zijkanten rijden. "Sinds die 30 kilometerzone is het slechter geworden", zegt een van hen. "Of het nu is om te pesten, of omdat ze het hier volgeklad hebben, maar ze rijden nu veel te hard." Een andere bewoner: "Mensen trekken hier bij het kruispunt op en er wordt gewoon keihard gereden. Dat geldt voor bussen streekvervoer, vuilniswagens: iedereen rijdt hier te hard." De bewoners willen drempels, zebrapaden en een flitspaal. Ze hebben vorig jaar al contact gehad met de afdeling van wethouder Melanie van der Horst (Verkeer) en zij is zelfs op bezoek gekomen. Haar woordvoerder laat aan AT5 weten dat Van der Horst ook een flitspaal wil, maar dat de politie en het OM hierover gaan. De gemeente gaat daar opnieuw over in gesprek. "Het is heel eerlijk gezegd wel wachten tot er hier iets ernstigs gebeurt" Bewoner Amstelveenseweg "Het is nog niet gelukt. Ze zien volgens mij nog geen noodzaak", reageert nog een bewoner van de straat. "Terwijl er wel echt een noodzaak is om hier een snelheidscamera op te hangen. Want het is heel eerlijk gezegd wel wachten tot er hier iets ernstigs gebeurt." Een woordvoerder van het Openbaar Ministerie laat weten dat de weginrichting niet genoeg lijkt op een weg waar 30 gereden moet worden. Volgens hem moet de weg eerst aangepast worden voordat er eventueel een flitspaal geplaatst kan worden. We willen graag opmerken dat handhaving niet altijd de meest effectieve of voor de hand liggende oplossing is om een verkeersprobleem aan te pakken. Bij het bereiken van gedragsverandering proberen we vanuit de verkeerskunde te komen tot een zo goed mogelijke inzet van weginrichting (hoe ziet de weg eruit), educatie (communicatie, berichtgeving, onderwijs) en handhaving (staandehoudingen of geautomatiseerd). Op een locatie als de Amstelveenseweg merken we op dat de weginrichting niet goed aansluit bij de inrichtingskenmerken van een weg waar 30 de maximumsnelheid is. (zie kenmerken GOW30-weg). Het is noodzakelijk dat de wegbeheerder daar eerst stappen in zet, voordat we kunnen overwegen om een flitspaal of flexflitser te plaatsen. Als we die volgorde hier doorkruisen gaan we niet komen tot een duurzaam effect. En dat duurzame effect is natuurlijk wat voor omwonenden van het grootste belang is, dat op de hele Amstelveenseweg de verkeersveiligheid verbetert." Het is belangrijk om na een periode van informeren en waarschuwen te gaan handhaven op plekken waar mensen te hard rijden, zodat iedereen zich aan de snelheid houdt. We hebben daarom verschillende flexflitsers in de stad, maar wij zouden graag op meer plekken handhaving inzetten. Op de Amstelveenseweg bijvoorbeeld, daar zijn wegmarkeringen aangebracht en het heeft volgens onze experts genoeg kenmerken van een 30-weg om te kunnen handhaven. We gaan hier nogmaals met de politie en het OM over in gesprek. Maar dit gesprek moet ook landelijk worden gevoerd, want dit is een probleem waar steeds meer gemeenten mee worstelen, nu er op steeds meer plaatsen 30 km/uur wordt ingevoerd. The puzzle is that we need both the whole and the parts, but an explanation of the relationship between them has proved problematic and perhaps unknowable. In contemporary physics, the parts are the teeming world of particle physics, and these should make up the cosmological world of the universe as a whole and the overall framework of Einsteinian space-time. But as yet we have not been able to combine the two coherently. Is looking at the universe from the small scale and the large always going to be incompatible? Does it mean a theory of everything is an illusion and the attempt to combine quantum mechanics and Einstein’s general relativity a forlorn project?
