Today we're talking about gravity! From classical Newtonian gravity to General Relativity, I want to explain a key bit of physics called the equivalence principle: Why gravitational mass and inertial mass have the same value, or said differently, why heavy things are hard to push. The primary trick here is that general relativity allows us to predict "where to put the camera" to define an inertial reference frame. Unfortunately for my sanity, "where to put the camera" is "in freefall", and I'm using my very nice highspeed camera… Hope you enjoy! Introduced in 1955 by Fisher Research Laboratories of Palo Alto, California, the Count-O-Scope was a beta/gamma Geiger counter designed for performing radiometric grid surveys. The film, Billie Holiday’s screen debut, was directed by Fred Waller and distributed by Paramount Pictures. Symphony in Black represents a landmark in musical, cultural, and entertainment history as well as significant progress in Ellington’s own biography. It is a member of the first generation of non-classically arranged orchestral scores and perhaps most importantly, one of the first films written by an African American describing African American life to reach wide distribution. The film won the Best "musical short subject" Academy Award for its year. Symphony in Black depicts black life in America and the composition itself (A Rhapsody of Negro Life) is divided into four parts: “The Laborers,” “A Triangle”, “A Hymn of Sorrow” and “Harlem Rhythm”. “A Triangle” features the vocals by Holiday and solos by jazz clarinetist and tenor saxophonist Barney Bigard and Ellington Orchestra regular, trombonist 'Tricky Sam' Nanton. It is important to note that while Symphony in Black is the title of the Paramount film, A Rhapsody of Negro Life is the actual title of Ellington's composition. The piece has been largely overshadowed by its successor, perhaps Ellington’s most best known extended composition, "Black, Brown, and Beige" and thus significantly less documentation exists concerning it. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. His first dive in Baja, California used heavy Japanese hard hat equipment. Driven to share his fascination with the deep sea, Craig developed cameras and techniques that evolved from tripod-mounted units to lightweight 16mm cameras, making underwater motion pictures accessible and thrilling. Despite dangers, including equipment failure and life-threatening situations, he innovated self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (scuba), collaborating on helium-oxygen mixes to enable deeper dives. His career in military service included photographing atomic tests. Later he became a TV personality, producing "Kingdom of the Sea" and other series that explored sharks, sunken ships, and unique underwater experiences. Craig also trained divers for recreational, law enforcement, and firefighting, emphasizing safety and public service. Reflecting on his lifelong work, Craig expresses a continued romance with the sea, proud of his contributions to diving, underwater exploration, and film. It was produced by Jam Handy and likely dates to 1958, when RCA Victor introduced stereophonic sound. This was part of a larger trend of record companies adapting LPs for stereo playback. (RCA also released stereophonic sound tape cartridges in the same year.) As this film explains, stereophonic sound is a two-channel sound that separates out different elements of the sound. This technology more closely mimics how humans hear the world around them. The film introduces Bob Bags, the marketing manager at RCA Victor, who presents the new RCA Victor stereo orthophonic High Fidelity victrolas. He explains the concept of living stereo, which uses two separate soundtracks from one record groove to create a fuller, more immersive sound experience. Using animation, the film details the technical aspects of how regular one-track recording differs from the new living stereo grooves and the special stereo pickup developed by RCA. It highlights the benefits of living stereo for the average family, the compatibility of the new victrolas with various record types, and the conversion options for existing customers. Na mindere jaren, waarin cafés in de binnenstad verdwenen en de PvdA zelfs een plan maakte om de kroeg te beschermen, is er weer wat optimisme bij bruine kroegenexpert Willem Pijffers: "Tot mijn verrassing is het weer helemaal opgeveerd." In de tentoonstelling Authentieke Amsterdamse Bruine Kroegen in de Amstelkerk worden bijna veertig bruine kroegen in de stad uitgelicht. Het is vrij te bezoeken voor iedereen, zodat de bruine kroeg weer een beetje in het zonnetje gezet wordt.  En dat is nodig, want de bruine kroeg had het de laatste jaren best zwaar. We spraken bruine kroegenexpert Willem Pijffers in 2022 over zijn zorgen over het voortbestaan van de bruine kroeg. We spreken hem nu opnieuw. In hetzelfde café, maar wel wat vrolijker dan toen. "Het gaat goed met de bruine kroeg in de stad. Het heeft een dip gehad, maar na corona is het uit het dal gekropen. We zien vooral veel jongeren. Ze lijken de lounges en onpersoonlijke cafés in het centrum waar vooral Engels wordt gesproken zat. Ze willen weer een authentieke sfeer, bezoekers van alle leeftijden, een barman die ze herkent, een persoonlijke benadering en een gezellige sfeer", aldus Pijffers.  Toeristen Peter Quatfass schreef vorig jaar een boek over Amsterdamse bruine kroegen, waar nu de tentoonstelling op volgt. Ook hij is positief over de staat van de bruine kroeg. Maar benadrukt wel dat hij het dan alleen over kroegen in het centrum heeft. "De kroegen in de binnenstad hebben best veel klandizie, dankzij toerisme kunnen ze ook in de stille uurtjes een glas tappen. Daardoor is het op maandag en dinsdag bijvoorbeeld ook druk. Tegelijkertijd zien we dat kroegen in de buitenwijken het moeilijk hebben." De tentoonstelling is tot en met 27 februari op werkdagen te bezoeken in de Amstelkerk. Wat is een bruine kroeg?  Iedereen heeft wel een idee wat een bruine kroeg inhoudt, maar een precieze definitie bestaat volgens bruine kroegenexpert Willem Pijffers niet. De definitie die hij zelf aanhoudt, is deze: 1. Een beperkt aantal bieren op de tap en een paar jenevers 2. Weinig snacks op de kaart. "Je mag al blij zijn met en bakje pinda's en eigenlijk hoort er een gekookt ei op de toog." 3. Stamgasten aan een stamtafel. "Als je ergens voor het eerst binnenkomt, moeten er eigenlijk een paar hoofden omdraaien die denken: 'Wie is dat?' " 4. Starting in 1955, bank founder Howard Fieldstad Ahmanson commissioned artist and architectural designer Millard Sheets to design over 100 buildings throughout California, including several in Los Angeles, known for their unique architectural style (New Formalist) and integrated art elements, especially large-scale mosaics. Footage includes the Home Savings and Loan branch in Pasadena (2:00) at 860 East Colorado Boulevard at Lake Avenue, which opened in 1963. At (4:00) the Home Savings building located at 2121 Avenue of the Stars in Century City is shown, now known as Fox Plaza. At (4:15) the Santa Ana branch on 1300 North Main Street, which opened in 1966, is shown. At (6:07) the Santa Monica branch on 2600 Wilshire Blvd. is shown, with its iconic mural (removed in 2019). At (7:09) the Wilshire Colonnade, originally known as the Ahmanson Center Building, which opened in 1970 is shown. He was one of the earliest of the California Scene Painting artists and helped define the art movement. Many of his large-scale building-mounted mosaics from the mid-20th century are still extant in Southern California. His paintings are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum in New York, the Chicago Art Institute, the National Gallery in Washington D.C.; and the Los Angeles County Museum. Starting in the late 1950s, Sheets was commissioned by Howard F. Ahmanson to design Home Savings Bank branches throughout Southern California that would serve as community landmarks by expressing "community values" or presenting "a celebratory version of the community history." To accomplish this goal, Sheets designed his branch buildings with exterior façades containing large mosaic works depicting local heritage. The Ahmanson commissions multiplied to include more than 80 branch buildings after the initial 1955 commission. Sheets resigned his teaching position at Scripps College and established the Sheets Studio in Claremont, California. It shows a family at their lake house in the USA and then an epic trip to France, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands. During the trip to Europe they visit the French Riviera and cities in Northern Italy, including Venice and Como. They then take a ship down the Rhine through Germany to Holland, before returning to the USA from Liverpool.
