The Trump administration on Friday placed sweeping sanctions on the International Criminal Court that prevent U.S.-based banks and companies from transacting with the ICC. The administration has been escalating attacks on the ICC since the court issued arrest warrants in 2024 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. It announced the sanctions just hours after former ICC Judge Navi Pillay — the South African jurist who led the United Nations commission of inquiry that concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza — was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. "This is really an insurance policy against accountability for crimes that the United States and its ally Israel are committing in plain sight," says war crimes prosecutor Reed Brody, a member of the International Commission of Jurists.

Een in brand gestoken scooter en pallets, bewoners die hulpverleners bekogelen met stenen, en tientallen ME'ers op straat. Het was gisteravond urenlang grimmig in Floradorp in Noord. Er werden drie mensen aangehouden, onder wie twee minderjarigen. Ook vandaag is de sfeer gespannen. De brandweer heeft al meerdere keren moeten uitrukken om brandjes te blussen, ook de politie is er aanwezig.  Midden op de Sneeuwbalstraat is nog een grote brandvlek te zien op de plek waar gisteren pallets in de fik stonden. Af en toe fietsen wat jongeren op fatbikes langs. Vaak met een pallet of een ander stuk hout achterop. Ook rijdt er aan het begin van de middag al wat politie rond.   Gisteravond begon de onrust rond 17.00 uur in de omgeving van de Sneeuwbalstraat, toen er een aantal pallets in brand werd gestoken. Daarop kwam de brandweer en de politie af. De brandweer kon de brand pas na ingrijpen van de Mobiele Eenheid blussen, dat was rond 21.00 uur.  Verschillende buurtbewoners die we vandaag spreken balen van wat er gisteravond in hun straat gebeurde. "Ik vind het echt niet kunnen. Ze kwamen ook voor onze deur spullen pakken om te verbranden. Ik vind het zo jammer dat die jongelui zo boos zijn. Ik snap het gewoon niet", vertelt een buurvrouw.  "Rond 21.00 was het vuur al uit, maar waren er veel jongeren op straat die bouwhekken op de weg gooiden. Toen werd het een soort kat-en-muisspelletje met de politie", vertelt een buurvrouw die een straat verderop woont.  De onrust volgde op een brief van burgemeester Halsema. Daarin stond dat zij ook een kleinschaliger alternatief voor het jaarlijkse vreugdevuur, niet toestaat.  Na ruim zeventig jaar van traditie besloot de gemeente vorig jaar geen toestemming meer te verlenen voor het vreugdevuur, dat jaarlijks tijdens oud en nieuw plaatsvond in de wijk. Bewoners stelden als alternatief voor het vuur in een container aan te steken, maar daarover liet de burgemeester gisteren aan de buurt weten dat dat geen geschikte oplossing was.  "Een brief kan natuurlijk nooit een reden zijn voor zulk wangedrag: brandstichting, vuurwerk en stenen gooien", laat een woordvoerder van burgemeester Halsema aan AT5 weten. "Dat veel mensen balen, snappen we. Maar het geweld van gisteren komt van een kleine groep. Zorgminister Hermans maakt twintig jaar na het begin van de Q-koortsepidemie excuses namens het kabinet. Tienduizenden mensen in Noord-Brabant raken vanaf 2007 geïnfecteerd door besmette geitenboerderijen. Het duurt drie jaar voordat besloten wordt om alle besmette geiten te ruimen, door laks optreden van de overheid. Tweeduizend mensen zijn nog altijd chronisch ziek. Zij lijden aan QVS; een ziekte die vergelijkbaar is met long covid. De zorgminister maakt geen excuses voor wat er tijdens de epidemie is gebeurd, maar voor het ontbreken van een goed sociaal vangnet voor de mensen die langdurig ziek zijn geworden. Denk aan het uitblijven van een expertisecentrum voor de behandeling van chronisch zieken. De meeste geitenboeren zijn na de epidemie gecompenseerd voor de geleden schade. De epidemie-slachtoffers worden - na langdurige onenigheid - pas vanaf 2017 financieel gecompenseerd. Volgens onderzoekers is het vertrouwen in de overheid als geheel beschadigd door dit proces. Patiënten zeggen te weinig begrip te krijgen, en van het kastje naar de muur te worden gestuurd voor hulp. Nu er excuses zijn gemaakt wordt er eenmalig 2,5 miljoen euro vrijgemaakt om de kwaliteit van leven van Q-koortspatiënten te verbeteren. In the book, Marx exposes the deceptive ways tech companies are taking resources from vulnerable communities in order to build massive AI data centers. “We have seen the tech companies that, back in 2019, 2020, wanted us to see them as climate leaders … completely throw their targets out the window in order to pursue generative AI and this data center buildout,” says Marx. He notes that after failing to connect to electrical grids in the locations where they were building data centers, some AI companies have pivoted to building “on-site gas plants,” further increasing dependency on fossil fuels. The battle against data centers is at the heart of a campaign in Tennessee: Democratic state Representative Justin J. Pearson is opposed to the Colossus data centers built by Elon Musk’s xAI in the Memphis area. Pearson is running against Republican state Senator Brent Taylor in Tennessee’s 9th Congressional District, which, after recent redistricting, includes parts of Memphis, as well as rural and suburban counties. “Across the 15 counties that I’ve traveled, I’ve yet to meet anyone, including folks who are Republicans who are voting for us, who want data centers,” says Pearson. “Gas is high; groceries are high; healthcare costs are high; wages are low. Vanuit de Herengracht 605 werd in de achttiende eeuw op grote schaal geld verdiend aan de Surinaamse plantages. Twee voormalige bewoners van het historische pand, dat tegenwoordig een museum is, speelden daarin een grote rol. De nieuwe tentoonstelling 'Plantage aan de gracht' belicht de financiering van de Surinaamse plantages en de gevolgen voor totslaafgemaakten. Bankier Willem Deutz verschafte vanuit deze woning twintig jaar lopende leningen aan de plantagehouders in Suriname, die ze uiteraard met rente moesten terugbetalen. Hij dwong ook af dat hij de opbrengsten van de plantages, koffie en suiker, als enige in de stad mocht verkopen. Daarmee werd hij een van de grootste verkopers en profiteurs van koloniale goederen. Na Deutz trok koopman Fredrik Berewout met zijn familie in het pand. Hij bezat meerdere plantages, waaronder plantage Jagtlust. Lijst met namen van totslaafgemaakten Tijdens zijn onderzoek vond conservator Thijs Boers documenten met 125 niet eerder bekende namen van totslaafgemaakten. "Als kunsthistoricus ben ik natuurlijk bezig met de archieven. Maar op het moment dat je die namen ziet, dan denk je: het gaat over mensen. En over wat ze is aangedaan." Presentator Dolores Leeuwin is nazaat van totslaafgemaakten en sprak de audiotour voor de tentoonstelling in: "Wat ik belangrijk vind aan deze lijst, is dat je beseft dat de mensen geen mensen waren. Ze waren inventaris, een manier om geld te maken." De ware namen van de totslaafgemaakten zijn namelijk niet bekend; op de plantage kregen ze alleen een voornaam toebedeeld. In de tentoonstelling worden de namen door Dolores en haar vader voorgelezen. "We willen de namen uitspreken, zodat ze er zijn. Want ergens zijn ze iemands voorouders. Dus ze doen er toe." The turning radius of one vehicle can become the reason a dangerous intersection stays the way it is. After a pedestrian was killed at an intersection on Hopkins Street in Berkeley, California, the city planned a safer redesign. In 2023, the project stopped because it lacked fire department approval. That conflict reveals how fire access requirements reach far beyond firefighting, shaping the width of roads and even the kinds of neighborhoods cities can build. Curb extensions and protected bike lanes can reduce the space available to large trucks. But San Francisco found another approach: redesigning its fire engines to make tighter turns. The vehicle’s dimensions were a choice, and changing them opened up possibilities for the street. So why is changing the truck so difficult? I follow that question from urban planning decisions to the manufacturers supplying America’s fire departments, where rising prices and long delivery times constrain the choices cities can make.
