En toch kun je er – met enige moeite – overheen lopen... Dichter bij Jezus Christus kun je niet komen, zeg ik altijd.’ Door heel Europa groeit een plantje met een bijzondere gave. Veenmos. Duizend jaar geleden bestond meer dan de helft van Nederland uit onbegaanbaar veenmoeras. Maar toen we eenmaal ontdekten dat dat natte veen drooggelegd kon worden, wat niet alleen een vruchtbare landbouwgrond opleverde maar ook de belangrijkste brandstof van de Gouden Eeuw: turf. ‘Rembrandt en de enorme rijkdom van Nederland zou niet bestaan hebben zonder die beschikbaarheid van brandstof.’ In Europa zijn nog altijd veel veengebieden ontwaterd, maar het ontwateren van veen heeft ons kwetsbaar gemaakt, zegt veenprofessor Hans Joosten. Want nat veen is een belangrijk wapen. Tegen klimaatverandering, maar ook tegen dreiging van landen als Rusland. Tegelijkertijd waarschuwt hij dat Nederland zelf steeds kwetsbaarder wordt: het land daalt, de zee stijgt en de kosten om alles droog te houden nemen toe. Nederland is een badkuip waarvan de stop langzaam loslaat. Joosten pleit er daarom voor om veengebieden weer nat te maken. Dat blijkt verrassend eenvoudig: stoppen met ontwateren is vaak al genoeg. En het heeft meerdere voordelen. Nat veen stoot nauwelijks CO₂ uit, helpt tegen bodemdaling en maakt het landschap klimaatbestendiger. Dat brengt pijnlijke vragen ter tafel voor boeren in veenweidegebieden. Generaties lang hebben zij dit land ontgonnen en bewerkt. Toch is doorgaan op de huidige manier wat Joosten betreft niet houdbaar. Het perspectief ligt volgens hem in ‘nat produceren’, en dus: gewassen verbouwen die tegen water kunnen. Zo zijn riet, lisdodde en veenmos niet alleen bruikbaar als bouwmateriaal, ze helpen ook de uitstoot van de bouwsector te verlagen. Bovendien kan veen een belangrijke geopolitieke rol spelen. Dat wil zeggen: door de geschiedenis heen vormden moerassen natuurlijke grenzen – zelfs Napoleons Grande Armée was niet opgewassen tegen moerasgebieden, en ook tanks doen het doorgaans slecht op een drijvend waterbed. Nu had Napoleon inderdaad geen beschikking over hightech wapens en worden oorlogen nu met drones beslecht, land bezetten kan alleen met mensen en voertuigen. En natte, slecht toegankelijke gebieden beperken die beweging. Which cooking oil should you actually use This is the simple guide chefs follow in the kitchen. For high heat cooking like searing steak, frying, or stir frying, use neutral oils with a high smoke point such as peanut oil, rice bran oil, grapeseed oil, or vegetable oil. or tallow if you are frying steak. Extra virgin olive oil is best for low to medium heat cooking or finishing dishes. Use it for dressings, drizzling, gentle sautéing, or slow cooking where temperatures stay low. Butter burns quickly, but you can raise the heat by adding a splash of neutral oil or using ghee or clarified butter. Sesame oil is a finishing oil, not a cooking oil. Add it at the end for flavour. Coconut oil has a higher smoke point but a strong flavour, so only use it when that flavour makes sense. Match the oil to the heat and your food will taste better instantly. They then head towards Panama, where they sightsee in Panama City and spend an extended amount of time on the Panama Canal. The moment of the present, T. S. Eliot's 'still point of the turning world', provides us with our observations of the world, the evidence for science, and the content of our consciousness. Yet, philosophers and neuroscientists have argued the present is unattainable and unknowable. Poststructuralists like Derrida claim there is no 'now' that provides direct and immediate access to meaning. Our descriptions are part of a shifting web of meaning that we can never get to the bottom of and which is limited by culture and history. Moreover, leading neuroscientists claim the reality we perceive in the present is a form of hallucination, or interface, evolved for survival. Do we need to give up the idea that the present is a moment of truth that provides the reality of experience? Are our descriptions of the present always undecidable and indeterminate? Or is the notion of a fixed present essential if we are to create and judge our theories and accounts of reality, without which we would be hopelessly lost? #time #consciousness #experience Winner of the Orange First Novel prize, Joanna Kavenna’s works include A Field Guide to Reality, The Ice Museum and Inglorious.
