Tommy survives to wage a campaign against the very advertising he used to propagate. This film was presented by the National Woman’s Christian Temperance Union and produced by Fred S. Niemann. 0:00 An intoxicated man rises from a bar after having had several beers. Narration introduces us to “this bum, this drunk,” Tommy Farrell, the narrator’s former self. Walking past downtown bars and advertisements: “Liquor House” (0:40). Tommy mentions he used to be an artist for liquor ads (1:08). An oil derrick in a residential area. Tommy staggers by (1:26). De oorzaak van de brand in de Vondelkerk begin dit jaar is nog altijd niet bekend. Dat concludeert de politie na uitgebreid onderzoek. "Technische sporen ontbreken in de zaak, aanvullende tactische sporen blijken er naar lang onderzoek ook niet te zijn", schrijft de politie. ’s Nachts wordt het dak van een donker gebouw door een grote brand verzwolgen, waarbij vlammen en rook de lucht in schieten. Brandslangen spuiten water op de vlammen, terwijl op de voorgrond puntige torens en nabijgelegen daken te zien zijn. De verwoestende brand in de Vondelkerk brak op Nieuwjaarsnacht uit. In de maanden daarna deed de recherche onderzoek naar de oorzaak van de brand. De politie onderzocht hoe het vuur kon ontstaan en of er mogelijk strafbare feiten gepleegd waren. Na intensief onderzoek concludeert de politie nu dat dit niet achterhaald kan worden. "Verschillende onderzoeksrichtingen werden uitgelopen, maar uiteindelijk moest de conclusie worden getrokken dan de oorzaak van de brand niet bewezen kan worden", schrijft de politie in een persbericht. De recherche sprak voor het onderzoek meerdere buurtbewoners en hoorde getuigen. Meerdere getuigen lieten kort na de brand namelijk weten dat het vuur zou zijn aangestoken. Onderzoek wees uit dat hier geen sprak van was. Ook onderzocht de politie het scenario dat de brand zou zijn ontstaan door vuurwerk. Omdat forensische sporen hiervan ontbreken, aangezien die door het vuur ook zijn verdwenen, kan hier geen uitsluitsel over worden gegeven. "Zelfs de metalen wijzers van de klok waren gesmolten", schrijft de politie. "Dat maakt dat er geen met bewijs onderbouwd antwoord gegeven kan worden op de vraag hoe de brand precies is ontstaan." De politie laten weten dat het onderzoek naar de oorzaak van de brand dan ook dood loopt. "We hebben het causale verband juridisch gezien niet kunnen aantonen", schrijft de politie. Bij de brand in een appartement aan de Rietwijkerstraat in de Schinkelbuurt in Zuid is niemand gewond geraakt. Het vuur is inmiddels geblust. Door de schade is het pand onbewoonbaar verklaard. Het vuur in de woning brak rond 9.15 uur uit op de tweede verdieping van een huizenblok. De bewoner was op dat moment thuis, vertelt een woordvoerder van de brandweer. De persoon kon het pand zelfstandig verlaten. Ambulancepersoneel hebben twee mensen gecontroleerd op het inademen van rook, maar zij hoefden uiteindelijk niet mee naar het ziekenhuis. Meerdere voertuigen van de brandweer waren in de straat aanwezig om het vuur te blussen. Onder meer brandweervoertuigen uit Amstelveen waren aanwezig om hulp te verlenen. Uiteindelijk wist de brandweer het vuur in de woning te blussen. Water- en rookschade De schade aan de woning is groot, meldt de woordvoerder van de brandweer. Het pand is dan ook onbewoonbaar verklaard. "De bewoner kan voorlopig niet terug naar de woning." Twee omliggende panden hebben door de brand en het blussen brand- en rookschade opgelopen. Stichting Salvage is bij het pand aanwezig om de schade met de bewoners af te handelen. Wat een gezellig en romantisch avondje had moeten worden in de Maasstraat in Zuid, liep twee jaar geleden uit op een poging tot moord. Vandaag stonden twee verdachten in deze zaak voor de rechter. Het Openbaar Ministerie eiste 18 en 20 maanden celstraf tegen hen. Beide mannen ontkennen ook maar iets met deze zaak te maken te hebben. Op de bewuste avond van 12 september 2024 gaat de toen 19-jarige verdachte Walid B. met een vriend naar Amsterdam en zij ontmoeten op het metrostation Zuid nog twee andere personen. Ze lopen gezamenlijk naar de Maasstraat waar op dat moment de inmiddels veroordeelde Abdulwahed S. voor de tweede keer op date is bij het latere slachtoffer, een toen 28-jarige man die in transitie is naar vrouw. Als er op de deur wordt geklopt en het slachtoffer opendoet, vallen twee jongens hem samen met S. aan. Wurgen "De aangever (slachtoffer) is bij zijn keel gegrepen en aan zijn keel meegesleurd, terwijl er is geprobeerd hem te wurgen", zei Luuk Bertels, officier van justitie vandaag in de rechtszaal. "En daarnaast is een mes tegen zijn mond of keel gehouden en is tegen zijn lichaam geslagen en geschopt. Er zou zijn gezegd: 'wurg hem'.
