Maar ook met kapitaal word je tegenwoordig niet per se rijk meer, althans niet met kapitaal in de klassiek-economische zin van ‘het bezit van de middelen om mee te kunnen produceren’. Nee, écht schathemeltjerijk word je vandaag de dag door iets te verkopen wat helemaal niet van jou is. Iets waarvan niemand ooit had gedacht dat het geld waard was. Tot 2004 ongeveer (hallo Facebook). Precies daarover schrijft Tim Wu in The Age of Extraction. Welke activiteit levert vandaag de dag economische waarde op? Wat produceren we nou echt met onze arbeid? Welk deel van onze dag zijn we aan het werk, en voor wie? Het antwoord is vreemd. Het product waar de moderne economie werkelijk om draait, is onze aandacht. Daarom kan Donald Trump nog steeds met droge ogen beweren dat de economie fantastisch loopt, want ja, de beurskoersen staan hoog. En dat komt doordat een handvol techbedrijven zoals NVIDIA, Google, en Meta de markten omhoog duwen alsof ze helium in een ballon blazen. Bedrijven die groot zijn geworden door onze tijd, onze aandacht en zelfs onze gedachten te delven. (NVIDIA iets indirecter, via de AI-boom en hun vervlechting met OpenAI, maar het mechanisme blijft hetzelfde.) En wat krijgen wij terug? Een paar korte dopamineshots van het scrollen, een stroom AI-gegenereerde kattenplaatjes en het gevoel dat we ‘verbonden’ zijn. Niet echt een eerlijke ruil. Noem het gerust de diefstal van de eeuw. Maar in zekere zin is het juist oeroud. Wat deze nieuwe uitbuiters doen, lijkt verdacht veel op kolonisatie. Alleen koloniseren ze nu geen land, geen grondstoffen, geen natuurlijke rijkdommen, maar ons innerlijk leven. Het terrein dat ooit volledig van ons was, wordt in kaart gebracht, ontgonnen en vervolgens geclaimd door partijen die precies weten hoe ze het moeten vermarkten.  Wij krijgen er, net als altijd, een paar kralen voor terug. Wu’s lens van extractie is daarom een eye-opener. Hij laat glashelder zien wanneer en hoe we verschoven zijn van een economie die waarde creëert naar een economie die waarde afroomt.  Dat maakt hem een echte Tegenlicht-denker. A group of men in suits take their private camera to various sites in unidentified portions of the state on what appears to be a business retreat. Footage captures white sands, blue shorelines banked by lanky palms, a swanky club house and a golf course as well as small boats on the harbor. It opens with the group’s arrival at a train station disembarking from a New York Central train and loading into vintage automobiles. While New York Central trains no longer operate in Florida, the railroad in the 1950’s was the dominant form of long distance travel and Florida was experiencing a boom in population and in tourism. In order to serve longer routes, railroads often formed partnerships with other lines which extended farther south. The group continues to explore, taking a boat ride and tee off on the golf course. Images feature personal shots of the travelers, amenities of the golf club and thick foliage common of Florida’s subtropical climate. Opening shots watch the businessmen in dark suits and fedoras arrive at the station (:10). They load into a small boat (:26). Shots pan over the marina (:30), boats and palm trees as the group settles in for a ride (:52). They tour white sandy beaches (1:45). Residential homes appear surrounded by thick tropical foliage (2:09). The group exits from a lanai (2:35) heading for trails (2:48) around the residence. They visit a sprawling golf course on the water and club house (2:54). Panoramic shots sweep the shoreline (3:29) and the dining area of the club house (3:48). A waitress tends to guests (4:04) as the open air patio fills (4:27). Two men stand near the flagstick on the green (4:30). Push carts sit around a ping-pong table (5:21). Point of view shots move down a stone path way over looking the water (5:34). The camera man captures personal images of the group on a small dock (6:07). A valet carts luggage (6:14). But the more we’ve looked for them, the more they’ve disappeared. Our best theory now proposes the world is better described by ‘fields’ that don’t have the familiar properties of physical bits, things, or particles. Yet physicists still refer to particles, though few seem to agree on their nature. Some say they ‘approximately exist’ and others say that they don’t exist at all. Stranger still, there are ‘quasiparticles’, phenomena that we can treat as particles and enable us to solve equations, but which we know aren't fundamentally real. Will we give up thinking that the world is made of particles at all, and instead embrace a world of fields and relationships alone? Furthermore, will we abandon the idea that any thing exists at a fundamental level?
