Hidden in the back corridors of Alexandra Palace; I found one of the rarest televisions ever made. The Ferguson Reflections from 1986; a limited run of just 500 sets built to celebrate 50 years since the BBC began the world’s first regular TV broadcasts from Ally Pally in 1936. It’s a modernised reproduction of the pre-war Ultra mirror-lid TV; complete with a TX9 chassis; a vertical cabinet design; and a reflected picture created by reversing the scan coils so the CRT image displays correctly in the mirror. Early TVs were built upright because they looked like furniture; people feared the glass might explode forwards; and the tubes were nearly four feet long. The progress of the conservative movement in late 20th Century America is examined by Professor Beverly Gage in this lecture. Recorded in Yale’s Battell Chapel. This one-time-only course examines U.S. history from 1776 to the present, in advance of the nation’s semiquincentennial (or 250th birthday) in 2026. Taught jointly by Professors Joanne Freeman, David Blight, and Beverly Gage, the course emphasizes the history of the nation-state and the contested nature of American national identity. All three scholars will deliver the course’s first and final lectures together, as an introduction and a wrap-up. In between, they will each deliver eight lectures individually based on their areas of expertise.   Joanne Freeman, the Alan Boles, Class of 1929 Professor of History and American Studies, and an expert in the revolutionary and early national periods of American history, will cover the period from the Revolution up through the 1830s, touching on such topics as the birth of party politics, the nature of “Jacksonian democracy,” and the rise of the reform and protest movements. David Blight, Sterling Professor of History and African American Studies and one of the country’s foremost authorities on the history of slavery and the Civil War, will cover the Civil War era up through Reconstruction and the emergence of the Jim Crow laws. Beverly Gage, John Lewis Gaddis Professor of History, who is currently writing a book on the nation’s past to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, will pick up in the 1890s and continue through the end of the 20th century, addressing debates around immigration, wealth inequality, and the creation of the social welfare state.  The course explores U.S. political history broadly conceived–not just as a realm of presidents and elections and wars (though there will be plenty of those) but as a conversation across time between citizens about what the United States is, was, and was meant to be. It proceeds from the premise that the American Revolution was the first but not the last radical act of national reimagining in U.S. history. D66 en het CDA willen betalen ‘naar gebruik, plaats en tijd’. Volgens hen is dat eerlijker — zeker nu elektrische auto’s de inkomsten uit benzine- en dieselaccijnzen laten dalen. 2️⃣ Maar dan komt de échte uitdaging: de wegenbelasting (mrb). Elektrische auto’s zijn zwaarder, maar nu nog vrijgesteld. Dat helpt de transitie, maar maakt het systeem op termijn onhoudbaar. Voorstellen om de belasting te baseren op lengte en hoogte van auto’s liggen al klaar — maar geen partij durft er als eerste hardop over te beginnen. 3️⃣ Ondertussen klinken de reacties luid. Brancheverenigingen noemen rekeningrijden “de enige eerlijke optie”. De PVV spreekt van “een ramp voor Nederland”. Experts waarschuwen voor privacyrisico’s, en economen zeggen dat een kilometerheffing andere impopulaire maatregelen misschien kan vervangen — zoals de geplande pseudo-eindheffing in 2027. En dan is er nog de politiek. Links ziet kansen voor minder files en schonere lucht. Rechts vreest hogere kosten voor forenzen en mensen buiten de Randstad. En de VVD? Die zwijgt opvallend — misschien strategisch. Na maanden van debatten en rekenmodellen volgt uiteindelijk het slotstuk: een compleet nieuw autobelastingstelsel. Want één ding is duidelijk: aan alleen rekeningrijden heb je niets — het hele systeem moet op de schop.
