De NS uit zorgen over het optreden van het Openbaar Ministerie bij agressie en geweld tegen hun personeel. Volgens het spoorwegbedrijf wordt de richtlijn om bij delicten tegen medewerkers met een publieke taak 200 procent hogere strafeisen te hanteren nauwelijks gevolgd. Jaarlijks vinden er meer dan duizend ernstige incidenten plaats bij de NS, waarvan honderden met fysiek geweld. Conducteurs en ander treinpersoneel ervaren dat deze extra bescherming in de praktijk weinig effect heeft. Uit onderzoek in opdracht van het WODC blijkt dat de strafverhoging die in de OM-richtlijn staat vrijwel nooit wordt toegepast. Hoewel straffen gemiddeld iets hoger uitvallen, zijn ze volgens onderzoekers niet veel zwaarder dan in vergelijkbare zaken. Voor NS-medewerkers voelt dit als een gemiste afspraak, wat invloed heeft op hun gevoel van veiligheid op het spoor en tijdens contact met reizigers. Ook in het Rijnstate ziekenhuis ervaren medewerkers dat politieke beloften over een harde aanpak niet altijd direct merkbaar zijn in de dagelijkse praktijk. Het OM benadrukt dat de verhoging van 200 procent een uitgangspunt is waar meerdere factoren een rol spelen, zoals persoonlijke omstandigheden of een mogelijk strafblad van de verdachte. Volgens het OM is het beeld dat alle strafeisen eenvoudig worden verdrievoudigd onjuist. Dat kan leiden tot teleurstelling bij slachtoffers wanneer verwachtingen niet overeenkomen met de juridische werkelijkheid, iets dat zowel in het OV als in ziekenhuizen als Rijnstate tot frustratie kan leiden. Naast zorgen over de hoogte van strafeisen hekelt de NS het aantal seponeringen. In tientallen aangiftes van agressie en geweld wordt een verdachte niet vervolgd, soms wegens gebrek aan bewijs of omdat de zaak als gering feit wordt beoordeeld. In verschillende gevallen waarin personeel is bespuugd of letsel opliep, bleken camerabeelden niet te zijn opgevraagd door het OM. Via artikel 12-procedures probeert de NS alsnog vervolging af te dwingen. Omdat agressie ook in ziekenhuizen voorkomt, ervaren zorgmedewerkers van Rijnstate dat dergelijke incidenten hun werk zwaar belasten. Voor medewerkers op stations, in treinen, aan de klantenservice en in ziekenhuizen heeft agressie een steeds grotere impact. Zij geven aan dat steun, duidelijke vervolging en voorspelbare procedures noodzakelijk zijn om hun werk veilig te kunnen blijven doen. Organisaties als de NS en Rijnstate signaleren dat de combinatie van bedreigingen, intimidatie en fysiek geweld hun personeel zwaar belast. Ondanks jarenlange politieke beloften om hulpverleners beter te beschermen, bereiken de agressiecijfers een historisch hoog niveau. Nederland behoort binnen Europa tot de landen waar geweld tegen werkenden het meest voorkomt. Het leidt ertoe dat medewerkers in cruciale sectoren twijfelen of zij hun werk nog willen voortzetten, zowel op het spoor als in de zorg. Zembla onderzoekt hoe organisaties omgaan met de toenemende druk op hun medewerkers. Bij de NS, het Rijnstate ziekenhuis en woningcorporatie Woonstad zien medewerkers dat agressie steeds vaker ontwrichtend is en dat zij in de frontlinie te maken krijgen met patiënten, bewoners en reizigers die grensoverschrijdend gedrag vertonen. Now, up to 50,000 people have returned to the streets of the capital, Sofia, to express their frustration against the government and public-sector corruption. I’m visiting the Mas Doix vineyards near Poboleda, exploring century-old bush vines planted on the region’s iconic llicorella slate soils. These shallow, nutrient-poor, heat-conducting slate layers are a defining feature of Priorat and play a major role in producing the area’s powerful yet graceful red wines. In this video, I walk through the steep natural contours of the vineyard, show the structure of the llicorella soil beneath my feet, and explain why these conditions are so important for vine stress, drainage, and intensity of flavour. The 1960s brought prosperity, violence, and protests. Professor Beverly Gage brings into focus some of the important trends and events. Recorded in Yale’s Battell Chapel. This one-time-only course examines U.S. history from 1776 to the present, in advance of the nation’s semiquincentennial (or 250th birthday) in 2026. Taught jointly by Professors Joanne Freeman, David Blight, and Beverly Gage, the course emphasizes the history of the nation-state and the contested nature of American national identity. All three scholars will deliver the course’s first and final lectures together, as an introduction and a wrap-up. In between, they will each deliver eight lectures individually based on their areas of expertise.   Joanne Freeman, the Alan Boles, Class of 1929 Professor of History and American Studies, and an expert in the revolutionary and early national periods of American history, will cover the period from the Revolution up through the 1830s, touching on such topics as the birth of party politics, the nature of “Jacksonian democracy,” and the rise of the reform and protest movements. David Blight, Sterling Professor of History and African American Studies and one of the country’s foremost authorities on the history of slavery and the Civil War, will cover the Civil War era up through Reconstruction and the emergence of the Jim Crow laws. Beverly Gage, John Lewis Gaddis Professor of History, who is currently writing a book on the nation’s past to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, will pick up in the 1890s and continue through the end of the 20th century, addressing debates around immigration, wealth inequality, and the creation of the social welfare state.  The course explores U.S. political history broadly conceived–not just as a realm of presidents and elections and wars (though there will be plenty of those) but as a conversation across time between citizens about what the United States is, was, and was meant to be. It proceeds from the premise that the American Revolution was the first but not the last radical act of national reimagining in U.S. history. It's believed to date to 1951. The film uses animation and live action to explain how the radio compass, runway localizer, altimeter, directional gyro, artificial horizon, and marker beacons are utilized in the Air Force Landing System. Demonstrates instrument landing procedures on the Link Trainer. • 0:36: The film begins with shots of an air base in a fog. In conditions with low visibility, and no prospect of change for hours, pilots rely on radio and instruments for navigation and can even land safely in these conditions. • 0:41: Pilots can use radio and instruments to land safely. • 0:55: Air Force Instrument Landing System (ILS) helps pilots land. • 1:00: Pilots use radial compass, runway localizer, altimeter, directional gyro, and artificial horizon. • 1:18: Guiding stations are mobile and set up according to wind conditions. • 1:44: Runway localizer is a new component added to the compass locator system. • 2:02: Outer station located 3.2 miles from the inner station. • 2:20: Airplane approaches the field using radio range. • 2:33: Compass tuned to outer station for runway alignment. • 2:48: Altitude is adjusted for approach. • 3:00: Gyro checked for exact runway alignment. • 3:19: Steady glide maintained from inner station to landing. • 3:40: Pilots alternate tuning radio compass to two stations for alignment. • 4:11: Instrument landing procedure demonstrated on LINK instrument trainer.
