Professor of Biology Denis Noble, best known for creating the first mathematical model of a beating cardiac cell, proposes a profound shift in how we understand life. In this conversation with Hans Busstra, he challenges the long-standing central dogma of Neo-Darwinism: the notion of one-way causation from DNA to cell to organism, with genes positioned as the ultimate governors of biology. Instead, Noble proposes a theory of 'biological relativity': no single level—genes, cells, organs, or the whole organism—has privileged causal authority. Causation flows both upward and downward. Physiological states influence cellular processes, which in turn can reshape the genome. Agency is distributed across levels of biological organisation, and the genome is not a dictatorial blueprint but an interactive participant. Far from rejecting Darwin, Noble sees this as returning to Darwin’s own intuition that evolution requires mechanisms far richer than blind chance. Understanding those mechanisms, he argues, is the next Einsteinian step in biology. We leggen uit: – Hoe het Nederlandse en Europese slavernijverleden werkelijk in elkaar zat. – Waarom het nieuwe Amerikaanse taalgebruik (‘enslaved people’) populair werd. – Welke nuance verloren gaat als we het woord ‘slaaf’ vermijden. – En waarom slavernij wereldwijd veel ouder en breder is dan vaak wordt gedacht. 1️⃣ Eerst het verleden: Europa haalde ruim twee eeuwen lang mensen uit West-Afrika, niet om naar Europa te brengen, maar naar plantages in Amerika. Een groot deel van de zwarte Amerikaanse én Nederlandse bevolking stamt van deze groepen af. Rond de viering van 50 jaar Surinaamse onafhankelijkheid is er extra aandacht voor deze geschiedenis. 2️⃣ Dan de taalstrijd. ‘Tot slaaf gemaakt’ komt uit de VS en benadrukt slachtofferschap en dader-schap. Maar het wist belangrijke verschillen uit — zoals tussen mensen die als slaaf werden geboren en mensen die tijdens hun leven tot slaaf wérden gemaakt. Antropoloog Ellen Neslo zegt het helder: het woord ‘slaaf’ is niet het probleem; de uitleg ervan wel. 3️⃣ En het wereldbeeld. Slavernij is geen uniek Europees misdrijf. In grote delen van de islamitische wereld bestond slavernij al sinds de tijd van Mohammed.
