Verpleegkundigen in het Rijnstate ziekenhuis, boswachters van Staatsbosbeheer en baliemedewerkers van woningcorporatie Woonstad moeten regelmatig dealen met mensen die agressief en intimiderend gedrag tegen hen vertonen. Zembla volgt hen op de werkvloer en laat zien met welke dilemma’s deze professionals worstelen. In het Mastbos bij Breda werkt boswachter Floris Hoefakker als groene boa voor Staatsbosbeheer. Terwijl bezoekers het gebied gebruiken om te recreëren, moet hij kwetsbare natuur beschermen. Daarbij spreekt hij mensen aan die zich niet aan de regels houden, iets wat regelmatig tot woede of frustratie leidt. Hoefakker heeft een groot werkgebied te beheren, samen met één collega. Het natuurgebied is even groot als 15.000 voetbalvelden. Naast conflicten over bijvoorbeeld kapwerkzaamheden ziet hij steeds vaker mensen die illegaal in het bos verblijven, wat voor extra spanning zorgt. Bij woningcorporatie Woonstad in Rotterdam komen elk jaar meer dan 250.000 telefoontjes binnen. Ook daar loopt het geregeld uit de hand. Klantadviseur Nena kreeg recent te maken met een beller die haar zwaar onder druk zette en dreigde zijn buurvrouw iets aan te doen als er niet snel iemand langs zou komen. In andere gevallen gaat zelfs zo ver dat er explosies waren bij het hoofdkantoor. Woonstad Rotterdam heeft ook medewerkers die in de wijken rondlopen en bij huurders langsgaan om te controleren of de woongebouwen schoon, onbeschadigd en veilig blijven. Hierdoor krijgen Marinus en John vaak te maken met agressie, omdat niet alle bewoners het op prijs stellen om te worden aangesproken. Maar het is niet alleen grimmig naar de medewerkers toe, de buurtbewoners hebben ook onderling conflict. En dat soort ruzies worden niet meer alleen opgelost met woorden. Woonstad Rotterdam ziet de afgelopen jaren een enorme stijging van het aantal explosies en agressie bij de bewoners. In het Rijnstate ziekenhuis in Arnhem probeert het personeel agressie te verminderen door extra ondersteuning te bieden. De afdeling psychiatrie zet medewerkers in door het hele ziekenhuis om collega’s te helpen wanneer situaties dreigen te escaleren. Ruim zesduizend artsen en verpleegkundigen krijgen trainingen om beter om te gaan met moeilijke momenten. Het ziekenhuis wil af van het idee dat agressie “erbij hoort” en moedigt medewerkers aan problemen tijdig te bespreken. Verpleegkundigen merken dat vooral de regels rondom bezoekuren spanning oproepen. The Bring radical is defined as the solution of a particular quintic, which can then be used to solve quintics in the general case. If you know of one which does not, leave a comment.) But as far as I am concerned, this yields a larger question of what can be called a formula in the first place. If I say that an oracle which yields the solutions of the quintic is a valid symbol in my "formula", then the formula is merely the identity statement that the solution to the quintic is the solution to the quintic. I think this sidesteps the question- and furthermore, in such a world, the halting problem would even be solvable, by merely invoking such an oracle. The idea of a formula, if you ask me, is that we represent a complex behavior with simpler constituent symbols which we accept as atomic computations. Where the line is drawn is, of course, arbitrary, (although there is certainly interesting things to be learned by accepting alternate symbols,) but in this video we consider the arithmetic operators and traditional radicals. === Errata === Found by @samuelwaid: at 12:26 I said "we define i as being the [square root of -1]" but the actual convention is to define i as being an element such that i^2 = -1. As mentioned in the video, there are various valid definitions of the square root function, and for some of them, the "definition" of i mentioned in the video would not be respected. Found by @fumeal: at 11:37 I said that the set of operators on screen were continuous and single valued. However the division operator is not continuous at z=0. Found by myself: in the conclusion I said that there is no solution writable in terms of algebraic functions. This isn't at all correct, since the solution itself is an algebraic function! So, one may just say that the solution of the quintic is the solution of the quintic, and be done with it. For some reason I thought that algebraic functions were the functions definable with radicals and traditional operators, which is not the case (and obviously so, by juxtaposition with the definition of the algebraic numbers.) Sigh. If you replace "algebraic" with "using radicals and arithmetic operators", this would be true. The film features John Mauldin and tells a twisted version of the Thanksgiving story. The film begins with Johnny being dragged out by "orderlies", only to find that Doc wants to tell the true story of how early English settlers survived in the New World. Johnny recounts his arrival in America and how Native Americans introduced him to a magical red berry. Through a whimsical musical sequence, the berry is eventually named "cranberry" and celebrated for its many uses. Doc uses his magic pot to show the future of cranberries and their widespread cultivation and processing across America. Johnny and Priscilla, his love interest, joke about the past and ask Doc to send them 350 years into the future. In this video, we dive into the mind-bending idea that rhythm, pitch, and harmony are really the same phenomenon at different speeds. Starting with Jacob Collier’s 2-against-3-against-4-against-5-against-6 polyrhythm, we watch a complex groove morph into a major chord as it accelerates to unimaginable speeds. From there, we go deeper: if chords can be slowed down into rhythms (and rhythms sped up into chords), what hidden polyrhythms live inside microtonal intervals? To answer that, we take a polyrhythm hunt through Maqam Rast and its neutral third, using historical writings on tuning from masters like Al-Farabi, and Ibn Sina. Along the way, we translate wild ratios like 27/22 and 11/9 into both grooves you can feel and intervals you can hear, even testing what Fibonacci and golden-ratio polyrhythms sound like when pushed into the world of harmony. Ultimately, this is a love letter to the strange borderland where time becomes tone, and what we can learn at the intersection of it all.
