In 2000, just three years before the mapping of human DNA was declared a success, Bill Clinton claimed: "today we are learning the language in which God created life. It will revolutionize the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of most, if not all, human diseases.” But while we have identified some diseases that have direct genetic markers, we have not found genes responsible for the great majority of common conditions. Nor have we found widespread genetic cures. Moreover, the initial research focussed not only on those predominantly of European descent, but largely from a single American individual, making its predictions unreliable and in some instances dangerous and life threatening. Should we challenge the idea that genes are a blueprint for life and disease? Is the reality that other factors are responsible for our health and abilities? World War II was the most significant event of the 20th Century and is one of the issues discussed by Professor Beverly Gage in this class. Recorded in Yale’s Battell Chapel. This one-time-only course examines U.S. history from 1776 to the present, in advance of the nation’s semiquincentennial (or 250th birthday) in 2026. Taught jointly by Professors Joanne Freeman, David Blight, and Beverly Gage, the course emphasizes the history of the nation-state and the contested nature of American national identity. All three scholars will deliver the course’s first and final lectures together, as an introduction and a wrap-up. In between, they will each deliver eight lectures individually based on their areas of expertise.   Joanne Freeman, the Alan Boles, Class of 1929 Professor of History and American Studies, and an expert in the revolutionary and early national periods of American history, will cover the period from the Revolution up through the 1830s, touching on such topics as the birth of party politics, the nature of “Jacksonian democracy,” and the rise of the reform and protest movements. David Blight, Sterling Professor of History and African American Studies and one of the country’s foremost authorities on the history of slavery and the Civil War, will cover the Civil War era up through Reconstruction and the emergence of the Jim Crow laws. Beverly Gage, John Lewis Gaddis Professor of History, who is currently writing a book on the nation’s past to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, will pick up in the 1890s and continue through the end of the 20th century, addressing debates around immigration, wealth inequality, and the creation of the social welfare state.  The course explores U.S. political history broadly conceived–not just as a realm of presidents and elections and wars (though there will be plenty of those) but as a conversation across time between citizens about what the United States is, was, and was meant to be. It proceeds from the premise that the American Revolution was the first but not the last radical act of national reimagining in U.S. history. Joaquín Turina's "Sevillana" (1923) has the bold charm that only certain first ventures in a genre possess. Composed three years after Manuel de Falla's "Homenaje pour le Tombeau de Debussy", this landmark piece of our repertoire deepens Turina's exploration of the guitar as a "dual" instrument — constantly suspended between two identities destined to complete one another. This dual nature emerges in the contrast between the broad sections shaped by flamenco-influenced writing (rasgueados and rapid triplet figures) and the more suspended moments, where Turina's ability to merge his Andalusian roots with his Parisian fascinations is evident. For this recording, I use the first edition of the piece, published by Editorial Daniel in Madrid in 1927. It is, without doubt, the most authoritative source and the only version released during the composer's lifetime. Segovia's revision likely reflects what the Andalusian guitarist was performing in the 1920s, before the characteristic triplets were removed in the 1964 Columbia edition. Regarding the execution of the rasgueados in the opening and closing sections — which in Turina’s manuscript are notated implicitly — Segovia writes in his short preface: "Los signos con que he pretendido fijar la técnica caprichosa del rasgueado popular — tan bellamente empleado en esta obra — son insuficientes para el guitarrista que no esté familiarizado con la música natural de la guitarra española, e innecesarios para el que lo esté." It seems reasonable to think that the explicit notation of the rasgueado technique was the result of an agreement between editor and composer. Nederlandse werkende vrouwen verdienen gemiddeld 10,5 procent minder dan mannen. Als ook wordt gecorrigeerd voor zaken als opleidingsniveau, functieniveau en het feit dat vrouwen vaker in lagerbetaalde sectoren werken, blijft er een zogenoemd 'onverklaarbaar loonverschil' bestaan tussen de 4 en 9 procent. Oftewel: "Een loonkloof die niet te verklaren is aan de hand van objectieve factoren", zegt econoom Khadija van der Straaten. Volgend jaar gaat een nieuwe Europese richtlijn in die voorschrijft dat bedrijven in de EU transparant moeten zijn over de salarissen van hun werknemers. Die wet zorgt nu al voor veel weerstand bij Nederlandse bedrijven.

Afgelopen zomer kreeg de Holterbergweg in Duivendrecht ineens landelijke bekendheid door de moord op de 17-jarige Lisa uit Abcoude. Het stille en slecht verlichte fietspad langs een bedrijventerrein werd het symbool voor alle plekken in Nederland waar vrouwen zich onveilig voelen. Precies die weg wil de gemeente Ouder-Amstel gaan instellen als "voorkeursroute" voor fietsers in de avond en nacht. "Als we mensen kunnen stimuleren om allemaal dezelfde route te nemen, maken we het met elkaar veiliger", zegt burgemeester Susanne de Roy van Zuidewijn in Nieuwsuur. Dat de Holterbergweg nu is aangewezen als voorkeursroute, komt doordat de andere fietsroutes tussen Amsterdam en Abcoude nóg onprettiger zijn, zegt De Roy van Zuidewijn. Ook worden er woningen gebouwd langs de Holterbergweg, waardoor het daar binnenkort ook 's avonds drukker zal worden. Bovendien verhuist over negen maanden het politiebureau van Amstelland-Oost naar een zijstraat van de Holterbergweg.

Recipe Ingredients - 1kg brushed potatoes, peeled and halved (or any mashing potato) - 125g butter, softened - 180ml (¾ cup) milk - sea salt, to season - 1 tbsp olive oil - 6 Cumberland sausages - blanched peas, to serve Onion Gravy - 4 onions, thinly sliced - 50g butter - 2 tbsp olive oil - 1 sprig rosemary - 2 fresh bay leaves - 1 tbsp Worcestershire - 1 tbsp flour - 500ml beef stock - sea salt and pepper to taste Method Onion gravy 1. Place the butter and oil in a saucier or saucepan over medium heat. Once the butter has melted, add the onions and season with some salt. 2. Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes, then add the rosemary and bay leaves. 3. Continue to cook for a further 20 minutes or until caramelised. 4. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir through. Add the stock and worcestershire and stir well. Bring to a light boil. 5. Cook for 20 minutes on low, until thickened to a gravy consistency. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Mash potato 1. Place the potatoes in a large saucepan of salted water over medium heat. Bring to a simmer and cook for 35 minutes, or until fork tender. 2. Drain well, then place the colander over the hot saucepan to steam for a few minutes. 3. Push the potatoes through a ricer into a large bowl, or use a masher. Stir in the butter and enough of the milk until you reach a smooth consistency that you want. Season with salt to taste. Sausages 1. Heat the oil in a heavy based frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook the sausages for 6-8 minutes, turning to brown on all sides, until cooked through. 2. Divide mashed potato between serving plates, along with some peas. Top with the sausages and spoon over the onion gravy. Serve and enjoy!

Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky are finalizing the remainder of a peace deal for Ukraine, following initial talks between their top advisers resulting in what is now a 19-point plan aiming to end the war. Trump has hailed the plan a triumph, saying there’s been “big progress” during the talks in Geneva - but not everyone is as optimistic. Critics say it’s a step closer to a sellout, with Russia getting everything it wanted and giving up nothing in return. It also shows the notorious CIO “sit down” strike of 1937 in Flint, Michigan headed by John Lewis. Lewis was an indomitable voice in the 1930’s labor movement. It opens with Russian War games in review; Stalin watches over his fleet. 1920’s relations between Russia and Japan were a mixture of tension, distrust and wary stabs at cooperation. Hosted by professor Dr. Harvey E. White (1902-88) of the University of California, it provides an overview of how to use this calculating tool. It also explains terminology such as scales, slipstick, slider and body. At the time the film was made, Dr. White indicates that you could buy a slide rule for as inexpensive as 50 cents. The slide rule, or slipstick, is a mechanical analog computer. The slide rule is used mainly for multiplication and division, and also for "scientific" functions such as roots, logarithms and trigonometry, but usually not for addition or subtraction. There are many different styles of slide rules. They are usually linear or circular. They have a standardised set of markings or scales. These scales are used for mathematical computations. Some slide rules have been made for special use, as for aviation or finance. Those slide rules have special scales for those applications, as well as normal scales. The slide rule is based on the work on logarithms by John Napier and was invented by William Oughtred. Before electronic calculators were developed, slide rules were the tool used most often in science and engineering. The use of slide rules continued to grow through the 1950s and 1960s even as digital computing devices were gradually introduced; but around 1974 the pocket calculator made the slide rule largely obsolete and most suppliers left the business.
