Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt "I'm absolutely being imprisoned for a political agenda," activist Autumn Hill tells Democracy Now! in a phone call from Texas's Johnson County Correctional Facility, where the 30-year-old trans woman is serving a 50-year prison sentence for protesting outside the Prairieland ICE jail last July. Hill is one of nine protesters convicted of terrorism-related charges after federal prosecutors accused them of being members of an "antifa terror cell." In an interview with _Rolling Stone_ writer Jack Crosbie, Hill says that she had no intention of committing violence at the protest, which ended when a police officer was shot and wounded by a fellow protester who says he fired in self-defense. No other injuries were reported, and Hill says she had already left when the shooting occurred. "It was my belief that we would go home at the end of the night to continue eating and drinking and be merry. We truly didn't think that anything was going to go wrong. And we didn't expect or want any violence to occur." For prosecutors pushing the overly broad and poorly substantiated idea that anti-fascist organizing against the Trump administration is violent and dangerous, the Prairieland case was a "gold mine," says Crosbie. "There's no real burden of proof. They can just say that you're 'antifa,' and that becomes sort of gospel, according to the government." Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt We speak to journalist Aura Bogado, whose new investigation into Illinois law enforcement and prosecutorial collaboration with ICE has revealed that dozens of immigrants have been arrested and deported with the help of local officials in violation of the state's sanctuary law. "Those are 150 individuals whose lives were very often changed, communities completely split apart," says Bogado about her reporting. She further explains that while "there are constitutional rights for everybody, that [are] afforded to every person, … those rights are suspended in the immigration context. The bar that is needed to prove a case for deportability is so much lower." Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs on over 1,500 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday. Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt The Trump administration has announced unspecified plans to further tighten sanctions on Iran, threatening other countries, including China, in the process. We speak to sanctions expert Nicholas Mulder about what he calls the "rhetorical" and "psychological warfare" of the announcement. For Iran, says Mulder, the announcement was not "really materially all that meaningful. And to the extent that they are, they hurt ordinary Iranians and not the government." The impact on the U.S. relationship with China, however, could be much greater. If the U.S. does place secondary sanctions on Iran's trading partners, the "U.S.-China trade truce might be unraveling," warns Mulder. "The space for maneuver that the U.S. has in using these tools of very coercive economic statecraft has narrowed." In 1967, Ginger Baker records “Sunshine Of Your Love” with Cream—and creates one of the most influential drum parts in rock history. *The strange thing is, it sounds backwards.* Instead of leaning into the traditional rock backbeat on 2 and 4, Ginger emphasizes beats 1 and 3, builds the groove around the toms, and approaches the kit more like a jazz musician than a rock drummer. The result is a groove that somehow makes the song feel heavier, stranger, and more powerful. But where did this unusual approach come from? In this episode, we trace the story of “Sunshine Of Your Love” from the song’s origins and its connection to Jimi Hendrix, through Ginger’s obsession with jazz and African rhythms, to the moment he slowed the song down and found the “backwards” beat that made everything click. We’ll uncover why this seemingly chaotic drum part works so perfectly, how Ginger Baker helped lay the foundation for hard rock and heavy metal, and why “Sunshine Of Your Love” still sounds completely different nearly 60 years later. Luiz Mantovani plays Sonate in einem Satz by Ferdinand Rebay on classical guitar as part of our Siccas Media program (https://www.siccasmedia.com/). Find your dream classical guitar on https://www.siccasguitars.com 😊 Ferdinand Rebay was a composer, choirmaster, pianist, and piano teacher, who lived in Vienna between 1880 and 1953. He was passionate about the guitar and wrote around 400 works for the instrument, from miniatures to sonatas, from solo pieces to songs and chamber music. The Sonate in einem Satz (Sonata in one movement) was originally conceived for piano in 1901, later being revised and adapted for guitar by the composer himself. This performance was based on the autograph manuscript, obtained from the Music Archives of the Heiligenkreuz Abbey, near Vienna. It stems directly from Luiz Mantovani’s ongoing research on Rebay’s guitar music, which began during his PhD at the Royal College of Music in London and continues at the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC) in Florianópolis, Brazil. A winner of the Pro Musicis International Award (New York, 2002), Brazilian guitarist Luiz Mantovani performs regularly as a soloist and chamber musician in Brazil and abroad. In 2011 he was awarded the Latin Grammy for the album Brazilian Guitar Quartet plays Villa-Lobos, having also recorded for the Delos (USA) and Stradivarius (Italy) labels. Luiz holds a PhD from the Royal College of Music in London and has published regularly in peer-reviewed journals. In 2022, he received the Best Paper Award from Musicologica Austriaca in Vienna, and he is the author of the entry on Ferdinand Rebay in Grove Music Online. He has been a professor at the State University of Santa Catarina – UDESC since 2003, teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Learn more at www.luizmantovani.com. Ridge Vineyards is one of California’s most iconic producers, but one part of its winemaking might surprise you: the vast majority of its wines are matured in American oak. Ryan Johnson explains why Ridge has experimented with French oak but continues to believe American oak is the best fit, particularly for the powerful, high-acid Cabernet Sauvignon of Monte Bello. #RidgeVineyards #WineWithJimmy #AmericanOak #MonteBello #CaliforniaWine #WineEducation

It’s easy to overlook the conditioner sitting in your shower. But the right conditioner can do so much for your hair, like add moisture and shine, reduce frizz, and make hair easier to detangle. Yet the wrong one can leave your hair greasy or weighed down. In this episode, Wirecutter beauty writer Amanda Rosenthal explains how conditioner actually works and how to choose one based on your hair type and texture. She also clears up some common conditioner confusion, including who needs to use one, how to apply it, and whether “hair masks” are worth the extra money. This episode covers: • Why your hair type matters when choosing a conditioner. Rich conditioners can leave fine hair greasy and weighed down, while thicker or curlier hair may need heavier conditioning ingredients. • How to tell if you actually need conditioner. Dullness, frizz, difficulty detangling, and brittle-feeling hair are all signs that you should use conditioner. • Why you shouldn't put conditioner on your scalp. Your scalp already produces its own oils, so applying conditioner there can contribute to buildup and interfere with scalp health. Start at least three inches from your roots instead. Steamed Pudding Ingredients Burnt Sugar Syrup ¾ cup sugar 110ml warm water Pudding Batter ½ lb (225g) butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 1 cup sugar 3 eggs 3 cups plain flour 1 tsp baking soda ½ tbsp milk ½ tbsp vanilla paste 1 whole allspice berry To Serve ¼ cup golden syrup 1 cup custard Method Step 1: Caramel 1. Heat sugar in a medium saucier over medium-high heat until it caramelises at the edges, swirling the pan in a circular motion (don't stir with a spoon, or the sugar can recrystallize and turn grainy). 2. Once melted, cook 10-15 seconds more until deep amber. Remove from heat, whisk in warm water, and set aside to cool while you make the batter. Step 2: Batter 1. Grease two 22 x 12 x 6.5cm loaf tins with softened butter. 2. Dissolve baking soda in milk; set aside. 3. Cream butter and sugar 2-3 minutes with a whisk attachment, scraping down the bowl halfway. Add eggs one at a time, fully incorporating each before the next. 4. Mix in the baking soda mixture and vanilla. Turn off the mixer and finely grate in the allspice. 5. With the mixer on low, slowly drizzle in the cooled caramel syrup. 6. Add flour and mix until just combined. 7. Divide batter between the tins; smooth the tops flat. 8. Cover each tin with foil, folded and tied with twine below the rim. 9. Set tins on a wire rack in a large pot (one pot per tin if needed). Add water to reach the base of the tin, cover, and steam on medium heat for 2 ½ hours, checking the water level every 30-40 minutes. 10. Remove tins, rest, then turn out puddings. Slice and serve with custard and golden syrup.

Join me with questions and comments for this live stream on YouTube and Substack in which I share my historian's reading of Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness. Over the last ten weeks I have been reading Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness slowly. Each week I read a section of this famous modernist novella set in the Belgian Congo, and pair it with reflections from history, based on on the prize-winning, genre-crossing history book by Maya Jasanoff, The Dawn Watch: Joseph Conrad in a Global World.
Thousands of homes in northwest Indiana remain without power nearly two weeks after high winds and torrential rain knocked down trees and power lines, leaving behind flooded basements and roads. More than a third of a million homes and businesses were affected by the storm. The small city of Gary — where over one in three residents lived in poverty even before the disaster — was particularly hard hit.
