This is a Quantel Paintbox Workstation; one of the most advanced TV graphics machines of the 80s and 90s; and the one I saw in Cambridge originally cost over $250,000. Before modern software existed, these systems created chrome logos; spinning cubes; transitions; and almost every iconic TV graphic from the era. Bij de NS en in ziekenhuis Rijnstate zien medewerkers dat agressie steeds vaker ontwrichtende vormen aanneemt. Frontliniewerkers krijgen te maken met patiënten, bewoners en reizigers die grensoverschrijdend gedrag vertonen. Zembla volgt hen op de werkvloer en laat zien welke impact dit heeft en hoe organisaties omgaan met de dagelijkse druk van incidenten. Bij de NS raakt bijna elke dag een medewerker gewond. Boa’s moeten zorgen voor orde en veiligheid op de stations en krijgen veel agressie te verwerken bij het controleren van reizigers en zwartrijders. De helft van alle incidenten ontstaat tijdens kaartcontroles. De NS vindt het noodzakelijk om strenger te controleren om de veiligheid in de trein te verbeteren, maar boa’s hebben beperkte middelen om zichzelf te verdedigen en zijn afhankelijk van de politie voor ondersteuning. Ondanks herhaalde verzoeken om meer bevoegdheden kwam er jarenlang geen verandering. Nu mag de NS beginnen met een proef waarbij boa’s een wapenstok mogen dragen. De organisatie hoopt dat dit bijdraagt aan een veiliger werkomgeving voor medewerkers die dagelijks te maken hebben met agressie en geweld. Niet alleen NS-medewerkers ervaren deze toename. Ook politie, brandweer en ambulancepersoneel registreren historisch hoge aantallen geweldsincidenten. Nederland behoort al jaren tot de landen waar werkenden het vaakst worden geconfronteerd met verbaal of fysiek geweld. Een aanzienlijk deel van de zorgmedewerkers krijgt jaarlijks te maken met schelden, bedreigingen of intimidatie. In ziekenhuis Rijnstate in Arnhem zien medewerkers dezelfde trend. In 2024 deelde het ziekenhuis 24 rode kaarten uit aan bezoekers die een jaar lang niet meer naar binnen mogen. Daarnaast registreerde Rijnstate 430 agressie-incidenten, met een piek tijdens Koningsnacht. Voor veel zorgmedewerkers heeft dit directe gevolgen voor hun dagelijkse werkzaamheden. Het ziekenhuis probeert escalatie te voorkomen door extra psychiatrisch verpleegkundigen in te zetten op afdelingen waar spanningen vaker oplopen. Zembla onderzoekt welke maatregelen werken, waar de grenzen liggen en hoe medewerkers omgaan met geweld in de zorg. Baking a show-stopping pie for Thanksgiving can feel intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. Wirecutter senior staff writer Lesley Stockton, who has baked hundreds of pies and spent years testing kitchen gear, joins us to share her hard-won wisdom—from the best pie plates and rolling pins to foolproof tips for flaky crusts. Lesley explains how to overcome baking anxiety, what tools are worth investing in, and her favorite nontraditional pies to bring to Thanksgiving. She also troubleshoots common baking issues (like burnt edges and tough dough), and reveals her go-to pate pâte brisée crust recipe that never fails. This episode covers:  • How to become a more confident pie baker: Lesley breaks down the basics into manageable steps—practice a few test doughs, learn one reliable crust method, and accept that small imperfections (a cracked edge or a slightly uneven flute) won’t ruin the flavor. • Always bake pies on a baking sheet: Put your pie plate on a rimmed sheet before it goes in the oven. That catches spills, makes handling safer, and prevents thermal shock for glass dishes. Ingredients - 4 x 200g lamb rump - sea salt, for seasoning Salad - 1 bunch mint, leaves picked - 1 bunch tarragon, leaves picked - 2 tsp honey - 2 tsp dijon - 80ml (⅓ cup) olive oil, plus extra for drizzling - Juice of 1 lemon - 10 spring onions, trimmed - 2 bunches asparagus, trimmed - 1 radicchio, leaves separated Method Cook the lamb 1. Score the fat cap of the lamb in a small diamond pattern. Season all sides generously with salt. 2. Preheat the BBQ grill to high heat. Cook the lamb for 6-8 minutes, until browned on all sides. 3. Transfer to the resting rack above the grill, offset to the burners that are still on. 4. Reduce the BBQ heat to medium and close the lid, until the internal temperature of the lamb reaches 54°C. Make the salad dressing 1. Combine half of the herbs with the honey, dijon, oil and lemon juice in a tall jug. 2. Season with salt and puree with a stick blender until smooth. BBQ the salad vegetables 1. Chop the asparagus and spring onions into 6cm lengths. Toss in some oil and season with salt. 2. Set the lamb aside to rest and increase the BBQ grill heat to high. 3. Cook the asparagus for 3-4 minutes and spring onions for 2 minutes, turning, until charred and softened. Transfer to a tray. Assemble and serve 1. Chop the larger radicchio leaves into chunks and place in a large bowl. Add the spring onions and asparagus, remaining herbs and drizzle with half the dressing. Toss gently to combine. 2. Arrange the salad on a serving platter. Slice the lamb into thin slices, then add on top of the salad. Drizzle with the remaining dressing.

Toen de Oeigoerse Alerk Ablikim acht jaar oud was, vluchtte hij met zijn moeder naar Nederland om te ontsnappen aan de Chinese onderdrukking van zijn volk. Niet veel later werd zijn vader, een bekende dichter en songwriter, ontvoerd en zonder proces opgesloten in een concentratiekamp. Alerk is nu 26 jaar oud en heeft zijn vader al tien jaar lang niet gesproken: het is voor hen beide te gevaarlijk om contact op te nemen. In ‘Achter de Frontlinie’ vertelt hij over de systematische campagne van Xi Jinping om niet alleen de Oeigoeren, maar alle minderheden in China te ‘verchinezen’. In de beruchte maar zelden besproken ‘heropvoedingskampen' zitten op dit moment miljoenen mensen opgesloten. Ook doet de Chinese overheid er alles aan om het geboortecijfer in Oost-Turkistan (Xinjiang) omlaag te brengen. Dit is volgens internationaal recht een genocidale praktijk. 'Pas als iets als ‘genocide’ geclassificeerd wordt, vinden we het in het westen 'erg genoeg' om er aandacht aan te besteden,’ zegt Alerk. 'Maar zelfs na de vaststelling van genocide door onafhankelijk onderzoek, erkent de Nederlandse staat niet wat er in Oost-Turkistan gebeurt. From the bully pulpit of Theodore Roosevelt to Woodrow Wilson and the Great War, Professor Beverly Gage continues the examination of early 20th Century America. Recorded in Yale’s Battell Chapel. This one-time-only course examines U.S. history from 1776 to the present, in advance of the nation’s semiquincentennial (or 250th birthday) in 2026. Taught jointly by Professors Joanne Freeman, David Blight, and Beverly Gage, the course emphasizes the history of the nation-state and the contested nature of American national identity. All three scholars will deliver the course’s first and final lectures together, as an introduction and a wrap-up. In between, they will each deliver eight lectures individually based on their areas of expertise.   Joanne Freeman, the Alan Boles, Class of 1929 Professor of History and American Studies, and an expert in the revolutionary and early national periods of American history, will cover the period from the Revolution up through the 1830s, touching on such topics as the birth of party politics, the nature of “Jacksonian democracy,” and the rise of the reform and protest movements. David Blight, Sterling Professor of History and African American Studies and one of the country’s foremost authorities on the history of slavery and the Civil War, will cover the Civil War era up through Reconstruction and the emergence of the Jim Crow laws. Beverly Gage, John Lewis Gaddis Professor of History, who is currently writing a book on the nation’s past to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, will pick up in the 1890s and continue through the end of the 20th century, addressing debates around immigration, wealth inequality, and the creation of the social welfare state.  The course explores U.S. political history broadly conceived–not just as a realm of presidents and elections and wars (though there will be plenty of those) but as a conversation across time between citizens about what the United States is, was, and was meant to be. It proceeds from the premise that the American Revolution was the first but not the last radical act of national reimagining in U.S. history.
