John McDowell on Experience & Reality How do you know the world you see is really there? And what if the classic gap between “mind” and “world” is a philosophical illusion we’ve built for ourselves? In this episode we dive into the work of John McDowell, especially his landmark book Mind and World, to explore a radically integrated picture of perception, rationality, and reality. McDowell argues that the anxiety about whether our experience “matches” an external world rests on a mistaken picture of what human experience is. Instead of treating experience as either: raw, unconceptual “sense data” (the Myth of the Given), or a sealed web of beliefs floating free of the world (coherentism), McDowell claims that our experience is conceptual from the start. We are rational animals: our very way of seeing the world already speaks the language of reasons. Along the way, we unpack: Why “raw data” can’t justify anything and why that breaks foundationalism How McDowell keeps minimal empiricism—experience really does constrain our thinking—without falling into skepticism The idea of second nature: how culture, upbringing, and Bildung shape what counts as a good reason for us Judgment as an act: believing something as a commitment you’re responsible for, not just a brain state that happens to you Why cognitive science can explain how we represent, but not when that representation counts as knowledge The provocative claim that “the mind is partly not in the head”—because the content of our thought is tethered to a shared world and shared practices By the end, we argue that McDowell doesn’t just “solve” skepticism; he dissolves it. Wilfrid Sellars on Knowledge: Science, Ethics & the Myth of the Given Can you be a hard-nosed scientific realist and still take morality, responsibility and meaning seriously? In this episode we dive deep into the work of Wilfrid Sellars, the “ultimate neo-Kantian” of 20th-century philosophy, and explore how his system reshapes what we mean by knowledge, reality and being a responsible person. We start by demolishing the Myth of the Given—the idea that there’s a raw, non-conceptual “given” in experience that automatically counts as knowledge. From there we rebuild epistemology as a normative, social achievement that lives in what Sellars calls the logical space of reasons. Then we map our world using Sellars’ famous distinction between the Manifest Image (the world of persons, norms and everyday experience) and the Scientific Image (the world of particles, fields and physics). Rather than letting science dissolve our ordinary world, Sellars shows how the scientific image is actually embedded in the manifest image—and why we need both. Fearing an imminent Japanese invasion of Hawaii following Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Treasury replaced all currency on the islands with over $400 million in specially-overprinted bills which, if captured, could immediately be declared worthless. Although some of the footage is fairly prosaic, it has rare content, in that it shows a white child dancing with a group of African American / Black children. It's not clear where it was filmed or why. The footage may or may not have been exploitative, as the children are shown performing the Charleston dance, which ties into prejudicial ideas and tropes that were common in the era. The images seem to invoke the minstrel and happy "Jim Crow" caricature. Perhaps the white child was friends with these Black children; or perhaps the parents thought it was amusing to have their child dance with them -- it's simply not clear. Much of the rest of the film shows two white siblings enjoying playing games and putting on shows for their family together. (Note: in 1926, 16mm film stock was new and cameras and processing was expensive. This indicates the filmmaker was probably well off.) The film opens with three African American children and a Caucasian girl playing over snow crusted ground (:09). The youngest dances the Charleston (:16), trailing behind the group. Shortly after with happy feet she leads (:57); telephone lines and snow mounds dot the background. An older member of the group, their mother or a caregiver, dances solo, sliding on the frozen ground (1:09) and -- she's terrific! Kids clap and smile in unison (1:51). The youngest girl plays with her dolly (2:01). Another shot shows the Caucasian girl dancing on her stoop (2:23), front door and street address in the background. Close shots capture an open mouth smile (3:04). The view runs over neighboring residential homes (3:44). The season changes, youth play in summer suits on the front lawn (3:57). They play in the sprinkler (4:07). Happy shots show one boy with the water sprinkler gushing from atop his head (4:42). The young boy and girl play with army figures on the carpet (4:59). Outside of Victorian style columns, they put on a performance in formal attire (6:21). Older members of the family join the show (6:58). Kids take a dewy bike ride in the rain (7:30). Three adult members of the family sit on a wicker chair together (9:21). A number of guests enter and exit the front door; showing style and dress of the era (10:36). Wide shots show the home’s expanse (11:24). A male figure flips through book pages (11:50). A woman taps on piano keys (12:06) as the film concludes. Nora Bateson is a filmmaker, author and director of the Bateson Institute. In this conversation, Hans Busstra talks to Nora about her work and that of her father Gregory Bateson, who was one of the founding fathers of cybernetics. Bateson’s notion of 'double bind,' for instance, helps to see how solutions we design on one level of a system (say, the use of pesticides to solve food shortage) directly form an existential threat on a different level (destruction of soil microbiome). Expanding on her father’s work, Nora Bateson introduced the concept of ‘warm data’: information about the interrelationships within a complex system, which are contextual, relational, and multi-perspectival.
