It was directed by John Armstrong and produced by Pelican Films. The Forties oil field is the largest in the North Sea. Located 110 miles east of the Scottish city of Aberdeen, it first produced oil in 1975. In 1965 British Petroleum (BP) had already found natural gas in the region then in 1970 discovered oil. The find contained an estimated 1.8bn barrels. 1:46-2:08: The dock, traditionally used for shipbuilding, is now celebrating the christening of an "island". 2:08-3:03: The structure, which will stand in 400 feet of water, is described as an island to map makers but as a jacket for oil drilling to oil men. It is massive, heavier than four Eiffel Towers, and must be transported to the sea. 3:03-4:00: The jacket, made of 20,000 tons of steel, is towed out to sea, with the journey dependent on weather conditions. 4:00-5:06: A flotation tank, weighing 10,000 tons, is used to transport and tilt the jacket upright at its destination. The tank's chambers can be flooded separately, controlled by radio link. 5:06-6:05: The journey to the Forties field, the first oil field found in British waters, is underway with favorable weather conditions. 6:05-7:20: The route crosses historically significant waters, and forecasters predict good weather for the journey. 7:20-8:11: As the tow nears completion, the most critical stage of the operation begins, with support craft gathering at the location. 8:11-9:02: The jacket must be precisely positioned and tilted onto the seabed 8,000 feet below. Final checks are made, and the pre-flooding stage begins. 9:02-10:06: The structure is held over the drilling site by cables, and the pre-flooding process is monitored and controlled. 10:06-11:06: The crash flood stage is prepared, where the flotation tank will tilt the jacket through 45 degrees in less than 60 seconds. 11:06-12:02: The operation proceeds with favorable conditions, and the jacket is successfully tilted. 12:02-13:57: The jacket is secured on the surface, and the final stage of setting it upright on the seabed begins. 13:57-15:08: The jacket is successfully lowered and positioned on the seabed, completing the transformation from a dockyard structure to an island in the North Sea. 15:08-15:36: Three more of these islands will be created over the Forties field, with the goal of bringing oil to Britain from beneath the North Sea. Dit keer mogen we binnenkijken bij Lydia, die samen met haar katten Tommie en Nimis – beter bekend als de online ster Police Cat Amsterdam - op een woonboot midden in het hart van Amsterdam woont. 🐈‍⬛ ⛴️🐈‍⬛ Lydia geniet enorm van het vrije gevoel dat de boot haar geeft en is ontzettend blij met haar buurtje. Het is groen, rustig, alles is in de buurt en de buren zijn ontzettend lief. Zo stond ook een aantal jaar geleden de hele buurt voor Lydia klaar toen zij een ernstige hersenbloeding kreeg en voor langere tijd in het ziekenhuis belandde. Ze zorgden er zelfs voor dat haar B&B aan de andere kant van de boot gewoon kon blijven doorgaan en er geen gasten hoefden te worden afgebeld. Da’s nou eens echt een goeie buur(t), toch? ❤️ Inmiddels gaat het gelukkig een stuk beter met Lydia, en wordt er regelmatig gezellig met de buren koffie gedronken in de stadstuin op de kade of binnen in de boot. Sowieso is het een gezellige bedoeling, want omdat The Police Cat zoveel fans heeft, lopen er ook regelmatig groepen toeristen langs in de hoop een glimp van de beroemde kat op te vangen. Dat Nimis zo’n ster werd was overigens puur toeval. Toen Lydia’s jonge nichtjes af en toe op social media mochten, besloot ze daar voor hen filmpjes van kat Nimis in zwemvest te plaatsen. Totaal tegen ieders verwachting in, werd dat al snel een wereldwijde online hit, waarvan de video’s tientallen miljoenen keren zijn (en worden) bekeken. En de politie? Professor Beverly Gage begins her 8 classes for the final portion of the course with issues surrounding immigration. Recorded in Yale’s Battell Chapel. This one-time-only course examines U.S. history from 1776 to the present, in advance of the nation’s semiquincentennial (or 250th birthday) in 2026. Taught jointly by Professors Joanne Freeman, David Blight, and Beverly Gage, the course emphasizes the history of the nation-state and the contested nature of American national identity. All three scholars will deliver the course’s first and final lectures together, as an introduction and a wrap-up. In between, they will each deliver eight lectures individually based on their areas of expertise.   Joanne Freeman, the Alan Boles, Class of 1929 Professor of History and American Studies, and an expert in the revolutionary and early national periods of American history, will cover the period from the Revolution up through the 1830s, touching on such topics as the birth of party politics, the nature of “Jacksonian democracy,” and the rise of the reform and protest movements. David Blight, Sterling Professor of History and African American Studies and one of the country’s foremost authorities on the history of slavery and the Civil War, will cover the Civil War era up through Reconstruction and the emergence of the Jim Crow laws. Beverly Gage, John Lewis Gaddis Professor of History, who is currently writing a book on the nation’s past to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, will pick up in the 1890s and continue through the end of the 20th century, addressing debates around immigration, wealth inequality, and the creation of the social welfare state.  The course explores U.S. political history broadly conceived–not just as a realm of presidents and elections and wars (though there will be plenty of those) but as a conversation across time between citizens about what the United States is, was, and was meant to be. It proceeds from the premise that the American Revolution was the first but not the last radical act of national reimagining in U.S. history. Deze week begint de Nationale Weerbaarheidstraining, een militaire training van tien weken voor studenten. Defensie wil een krijgsmacht van 100.000 mensen in 2030. Daarvan moeten er 20.000 reservist zijn, oftewel oproepbaar in geval van nood. Om meer reservisten te krijgen probeert Defensie nu studenten aan zich te binden. Zij krijgen 15 studiepunten voor de training, wat neerkomt op een kwart van het totaal aantal punten per studiejaar. Die samenwerking tussen onderwijs en defensie is niet onomstreden: critici vinden dat die twee onafhankelijk van elkaar moeten zijn. Ingredients bánh mì (Bread) chicken liver pâté (recipe below) mayonnaise coriander roast pork belly (recipe below) cucumber batons spring onion batons carrot and daikon pickle (recipe below) sliced bird's eye chilli Maggi seasoning Pâté (or just buy some) 250g trimmed chicken livers 200ml milk 150g butter 1 clove of garlic 1 bay leaf 2 small shallots, sliced thin 50ml brandy salt and black pepper Carrot and daikon pickle 1 daikon, cut into matchsticks 2 carrots, cut into matchsticks 1 tbsp sea salt 1 cup caster sugar 1 cup white distilled vinegar 1 cup water Roast Pork 1-2kg piece of pork belly (1kg will make 6-8 bánh mì) 3 tbsp salt 1 tsp oil (I used peanut) Directions If your bread is not super crispy then pop it in an oven at 180°C for 3-4 minutes. Cut the bánh mì open and spread the pâté on the bottom and mayo on the top. Next, add the coriander and then the roast pork. Now, add the rest of the salads, cucumber, spring onion, pickle, and chilli. Season with Maggi seasoning and enjoy! Pâté Start by rinsing the livers under cold water and then placing them into a bowl and covering them in milk. Place the bowl into the fridge and leave for 3-24 hours. Drain the milk off, rinse once again, trim the livers of any veins or tendons and dry them on a paper towel. Melt the butter on low heat (you just want to melt it and not make it split or bubble). Make sure you keep 50g of butter to cook the shallots. In a fry pan, add 30g of the reserved butter and cook the shallots with a little salt, saute well and cook until translucent, but try to avoid much colour. Remove the shallots from the pan and set aside. Add the reserved butter to the pan and once it’s just starting to bubble, add the livers, season with salt and cook for 4 minutes on one side before you flip and continue to cook for 4-5 more minutes. Add the cooked shallots back to the pan and then deglaze the pan with brandy and cook until the brandy has almost evaporated. Add the livers and the shallots to a food processor and blend for 1 minute before slowly streaming in the warm melted butter. Once all the butter is emulsified into the livers, blend for 30 seconds more before you check for seasoning one last time. Pour the pâté into a clean jar and you can seal it with some more melted butter (optional). Leave in the fridge to set for at least 3 hours before you use it. Carrot and daikon pickle Add the carrots and daikon to a bowl and season with salt, set aside for 30 minutes. Mix the sugar, vinegar and water until the sugar has dissolved. Once the veg has set, ring out any extra liquid and place it into the pickling liquid. Leave this in the fridge overnight or until you are ready to use it. Roast pork Poke lots of holes in the pork belly skin, a fork works well if you don't have the tool I have in the video. Season the pork heavily on the skin side and leave uncovered in the fridge overnight. The next day, brush off any extra salt and pat the skin dry. Rub some oil into the skin and give it one last season. Place into a 180°C (350f) for 1.5 hours but start to check it after the first hour. Turn the oven to grill on 240°C and then watch it closely because it will all happen quickly at this point. Once the skin is all puffed up you are good to go.
