Vanwege Abramsons banden met het Israëlische leger vroeg het Concertgebouw afgelopen zomer al aan de stichting een andere voorzanger te vinden. De directeur noemt het een "ongelofelijk moeilijke kwestie" waar zowel het Concertgebouw als de stichting mee heeft geworsteld. "Natuurlijk had je dit liever allemaal niet gehad, maar het is ook heel mooi dat het ons gelukt is om, ondanks de grote controverse, elkaar de hand te reiken en over onze eigen schaduw heen te stappen."

Steeds meer mensen kampen met overgewicht en obesitas. Ondanks campagnes, preventieprogramma’s en pogingen om de leefstijl van Nederlanders te verbeteren, blijft de trend stijgen. Volgens het RIVM zal in 2050 meer dan 60 procent van de bevolking te zwaar zijn. Een nieuwe generatie medicijnen lijkt daar verandering in te kunnen brengen. De zogeheten afslankprik zorgt ervoor dat gebruikers zich sneller verzadigd voelen en minder honger ervaren. Hierdoor eten ze minder en vallen ze af, soms tientallen kilo’s. Duizenden Nederlanders hebben deze middelen inmiddels geprobeerd, met opvallende resultaten. Toch roepen de medicijnen ook vragen op over hun veiligheid, effectiviteit en de invloed van de farmaceutische industrie op de publieke opinie. Zembla onderzoekt hoe deze afslankmiddelen werken, wat de medische en maatschappelijke gevolgen zijn en hoe belangen een rol spelen in het debat over obesitas. Zijn de medicijnen echt een doorbraak, of verschuiven ze het probleem alleen maar? En wie bepaalt uiteindelijk de richting van het beleid: onafhankelijke wetenschappers of bedrijven met een commercieel belang? Uit onderzoek van Zembla blijkt dat een groep gezondheidseconomen die pleitte voor meer maatregelen tegen obesitas, niet volledig transparant was over hun banden met een fabrikant van afslankmedicatie. Acht economen overhandigden een manifest aan toenmalig staatssecretaris Vincent Karremans, waarin zij opriepen tot een nationale aanpak van obesitas en tot snellere behandeling van mensen met overgewicht. Drie van hen bleken naast hun werk aan het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen ook actief voor een farmaceut die afslankmiddelen produceert. Volgens emeritus hoogleraar Lex Bouter is dat in strijd met de gedragscode wetenschappelijke integriteit. Het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen erkent dat er sprake is van belangenverstrengeling. Toch benadrukken de betrokken onderzoekers dat hun banden met de farmaceut geen invloed hebben gehad op de inhoud van het manifest. Volgens hen hadden ze de samenwerking wel moeten vermelden. De gedragscode schrijft voor dat wetenschappers altijd open moeten zijn over nevenfuncties en mogelijke belangenconflicten, juist om het vertrouwen in wetenschap te behouden. In het manifest wordt verwezen naar een onderzoek van de Universiteit Maastricht en het Partnerschap Overgewicht Nederland (PON), waarin staat dat overgewicht de samenleving jaarlijks 79 miljard euro kost. Dat bedrag blijkt echter niet te kloppen. Volgens gezondheidseconoom Jochen Mierau is het een overschatting, omdat geen vergelijking is gemaakt met de zorgkosten van mensen zonder obesitas. Internationaal onderzoek schat de maatschappelijke kosten voor Nederland op maximaal 25 miljard euro per jaar. Eén van de opstellers van het onderzoek, econome Karen Freijer, erkent dat het bedrag ‘hoog over’ is en bedoeld was als waarschuwing. Toch is de hoogte van zulke cijfers niet zonder belang, stelt Bouter. Hoe hoger de maatschappelijke kosten worden ingeschat, hoe meer druk er ontstaat om dure medicijnen te vergoeden. Farmaceuten spelen daar volgens hem handig op in. Momenteel worden de afslankmiddelen nog niet vergoed door zorgverzekeraars, al dringt de industrie daar wel op aan. Buying used can be a great way to save money and find  unique items—but it takes a sharp eye to find the real gems. And you need to be savvy to get a good price, as some vintage furniture and clothing can cost more than new items (and you can’t return them!). In this episode, we talk with Wirecutter senior staff writer Ivy Elrod, who has spent years navigating secondhand marketplaces. Ivy walks us through her best strategies for finding high-quality used furniture, clothing, and other items–from scouring Facebook Marketplace to mastering the art of negotiation.  Plus, she gives us her best tips for envisioning your space before you start buying, and what to look for in photos to give you clues as to the quality of the items you’re looking for.  This episode covers:  • Use visual tools to plan your space: Ivy recommends creating mood boards by creating a collage in Canva or Keynote, or even using the photo cut-out feature (https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/lift-a-subject-from-the-photo-background-iphfe4809658/17.0/ios/17.0) on your iPhone, to clip images of furniture you’re interested in and pasting them in pictures of your space to get a sense of how the pieces will look together.  • Where to shop for the best deals (and how to stay safe): For in-person finds, Ivy recommends local options like Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and estate sales. She also recommends always bringing a buddy to come with you. • How to evaluate quality before you buy: Ivy says that simple photos showing wear and tear are a sign the seller is being honest. Buyers who are upfront about any damage, and who include reference photos to show the extent, are probably more trustworthy to engage with.  • Negotiate politely on price: “Haggling” is out, “negotiating” is in. Keep your ideal price in mind, be kind and ask for what you want, and be willing to walk away.  Try language like “Would you consider X?” or “My budget is X, can we make that work?” • Don’t be shy in inspecting the items in person: Ivy recommends asking questions and engaging with the item when you see it IRL. Flip up cushions, view it from every angle, check for signs of bedbugs and critters—make sure you’ve seen everything you need to see before you bring it home. • Being late can actually get you a deal: At the end of estate sales, Ivy has found that sometimes sellers are more eager to give you a discount to avoid having to transport things back and forth. • Be ready to act fast: When buying used, timing is arguably the most important factor. People more often than not just want things out of their space. We speak with Amer Shomali, an interdisciplinary artist and the Director of the Palestinian Museum. Shomali discusses the urgent mission to decolonize the museum in a colonial context, rethinking its function from a static destination to a dynamic resource on the frontline. Discover the radical ways the museum utilizes the global Palestinian diaspora as "international scattered custodians" to tell their stories without physical collections. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The All Eyes on Palestine Exhibition raises awareness about the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Through the work of Palestinian artists, it creates a space for expression and solidarity, where art becomes a form of resistance. This makes the exhibition both urgent and necessary. It showcases a generation of artists whose work preserves the cultural identity of the land and its people. Their art bears witness to Palestinian identity shaped by ongoing trauma and struggle, compelling us to keep our eyes on Palestine.
