It was released on March 11, 1948 and takes place in Kaimesha, New York (referenced by the narrator as next to Kaimesha Lake) at the Concord Hotel, located in the Catskills Mountains. The hotel was one of the larger and more popular of the Borscht Belt hotels, boasting a variety of amenities and being host to many famous performers and persons. In “Net Marvels”, Bill Stern delivers a witty narration while viewers get a front row seat along with the spectators of the resort in witnessing the impressive talents of (as the narrator states at the time of production) former World Double’s Champion and European Single’s Titleholder, Sándor Glancz, playing against three time United States Singles Champion, Lou Pagliaro, as the two duel in a staged table tennis match which features excellent slow-motion footage of their game and the many trick shots they perform. Sándor Glancz of Hungary won over the course of his career fourteen World Championship medals, including four gold medals, one being the mentioned doubles at the 1933 World Table Tennis Championship. Lou Pagliaro, born of Italian immigrants in New York City, in addition to his four national championships has represented the United States in winning three World Championship medals—in 1938 bronze men’s team, and in 1947 silver for men’s team and bronze for men’s singles. The lingering costs of the Civil War, Jim Crow, and the westward expansion are topics of Professor David Blight’s final lecture in the series. Recorded in Yale’s Battell Chapel. This one-time-only course examines U.S. history from 1776 to the present, in advance of the nation’s semiquincentennial (or 250th birthday) in 2026. Taught jointly by Professors Joanne Freeman, David Blight, and Beverly Gage, the course emphasizes the history of the nation-state and the contested nature of American national identity. All three scholars will deliver the course’s first and final lectures together, as an introduction and a wrap-up. In between, they will each deliver eight lectures individually based on their areas of expertise.   Joanne Freeman, the Alan Boles, Class of 1929 Professor of History and American Studies, and an expert in the revolutionary and early national periods of American history, will cover the period from the Revolution up through the 1830s, touching on such topics as the birth of party politics, the nature of “Jacksonian democracy,” and the rise of the reform and protest movements. David Blight, Sterling Professor of History and African American Studies and one of the country’s foremost authorities on the history of slavery and the Civil War, will cover the Civil War era up through Reconstruction and the emergence of the Jim Crow laws. Currently teaching at the Cité des arts de Montpellier, Paul Bizot is a promising young guitarist of the new generation. He has studied with internationally renowned artists such as Gabriel Bianco, the Duo Melis, Lukasz Kuropaczewski, Carlo Marchione, and Paolo Pegoraro at the Académie Supérieure de Musique de Strasbourg, the Jan Paderewski Academy in Poznan (Poland), the Maastricht Conservatory (Netherlands) and the Segovia Guitar Academy (Italy). Interested in chamber music, he performs regularly with the violist Marina Capstick and the clarinetist Julie Dufossez. Passionate about teaching, he has been invited to teach at the Paris Guitar Foundation's summer courses in Normandy, at the Académie Internationale de Musique et de Danse de Lozère, and as a jury member at international competitions (Drômes de Guitare, Lyra International Competition Vilnius). His students regularly win prizes at national competitions. Paul is a Knobloch strings artist. Ciabatta rolls Ingredients 600g (4 cups) bread flour 475ml warm water (32°C/90°F) 12g (2½ tsp) cooking salt (kosher salt) 40ml (¼ cup) olive oil 7g (2¼ tsp) dry yeast Sea salt Method Step 1: Prep and proof dough Place the yeast in a large bowl and mix in water until dissolved. Pour in the oil and add the flour and salt. Mix until just combined and the flour is hydrated. Cover the bowl with a tea towel and let it rest for 30 minutes. Step 2: Stretch and fold the dough Uncover the dough, then with a wet hand, stretch one corner of the dough and fold it over itself. Repeat 4 times until the dough is completely folded over itself. Cover again with a tea towel and let it rest for another 20 minutes. Repeat this process three more times. After the fourth and final round of stretching and folding, let the dough rest for 20 minutes. Step 4: Bake Preheat the oven to 220°C (428°F). Line 2 large baking trays with baking paper. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured work surface. Gently stretch out the dough to an even thickness and lightly flour the top. Cut into 8 rectangle portions and transfer to prepared trays, leaving space in between each one for rising and spreading. Cover lightly with a tea towel and leave for 30 minutes to proof. Uncover and bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes, until golden. Transfer the rolls from tray to a wire rack to cool before slicing open
