De energietransitie? Complete onzin, aldus de Franse historicus Jean-Baptiste Fressoz. Het idee dat we van hout zijn overgestapt op kolen, van kolen op olie, en nu olie gedagzwaaien om in plaats daarvan het pad te effenen voor groene, hernieuwbare energie blijkt helaas vooral een misleidende mythe. Dat de vork nogal anders in de steel zit, lees je Fressoz’ boek More and More and More: An All-Consuming History waarin hij het verontrustende beeld schetst dat nieuwe energiebronnen de oude nooit hebben vervangen. Integendeel: ze hebben zich juist op elkaar gestapeld en zijn hevig verweven met elkaar, waardoor het totale energieverbruik alleen maar blijft toenemen. Vandaag verbranden we meer hout, kolen, olie en gas dan ooit, alle zonne- en windenergie ten spijt. Fressoz laat zien hoe de term energietransitie door politici en oliebedrijven werd – en wordt – gebruikt om de schijn van verandering te wekken, terwijl de politiek en fossiele industrie in werkelijkheid nooit van zins waren iets te doen aan het veranderende klimaat, omdat dat zou betekenen dat de economie zou worden afgeremd. Daarmee ondermijnt Fressoz het geloof in technologische vooruitgang en kapitalistische innovatie als oplossing voor de klimaatcrisis. Historisch gezien heeft elke zogenoemde energietransitie juist geleid tot uitbreiding van productie en verbruik. Ook moderne technologieën zoals koolstofopslag noemt hij schijnoplossingen: ze houden het idee in stand dat we kunnen doorgaan zoals altijd, zolang we maar iets efficiënter produceren. Volgens Fressoz moeten we ons niet blindstaren op nieuwe technologie, maar nadenken over wat we doen met de CO2 die we blijven uitstoten. Ook in 2050 of 2070 zal CO2 een rol spelen in onze economie. De vraag is alleen: in dienst van wie? Wordt energie ingezet om menselijk welzijn te bevorderen, of om de rijkdom van de rijken der aarde te vergroten? De kern van de klimaatkwestie is volgens Fressoz dan ook sociaal: het gaat om de herverdeling van macht en kapitaal. I think it's good to have a substantial dish when prepping for a picnic, and for me cold pies are where it's at. This pie is inspired by the classic New Zealand bacon and egg pie, but I've added in a curried egg filling as well as whole eggs and switched out the bacon for salmon. It's easy to cook and it keeps well so you can prep it ahead of time. This recipe was created in partnership with @AustralianEggs to bring you some fresh egg recipe ideas to enjoy outdoors during the Aussie summer. #AustralianEggs #AussieAlfresco #Pie #recipe Ingredients 2 tbsp ghee 2 red onions, finely chopped 4 cloves garlic, finely grated 3cm piece fresh ginger, finely grated 2 tsp curry powder 150g baby spinach 11 eggs ½ bunch parsley, finely chopped 125ml cream (½ cup) 150g hot smoked salmon, flaked 375g frozen shortcrust pastry, thawed 375g frozen puff pastry, thawed Method Step 1: Cook the base Heat the ghee in a large deep frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and ginger and cook, stirring for 30 seconds. Then add the onions, season with salt and cook, stirring for 2-3 minutes, until softened. Sprinkle over the curry powder and cook, stirring for 1 minute, until aromatic. Add spinach and gently stir until wilted. Remove from the heat and transfer to a tray to cool. Step 2: Mix the filling Whisk 4 of the eggs in a large bowl with the cream and parsley until well combined, season with salt and pepper. Stir in the cooled curried onion and spinach mixture. Step 3: Build the pie Lightly grease a 22cm round springform pan. Cut 1 round from the shortcrust pastry for the base, and 1 round from the puff pastry for the top. Cut the remaining shortcrust pastry trimmings to fit the sides of the tin and line the base then the sides. Press at the joins to seal. Prick the base several times with a fork. Gently crack 6 eggs into a shallow bowl, taking care not to break the yolks. Pour this into the base of the pie. Season with salt. Place the salmon in between egg yolks, then gently spoon over the curry egg mixture. Cover with the pastry lid and crimp the side pastry over the top and pinch to seal. Beat the remaining egg in a small bowl and brush the top of the pie with egg wash. Sprinkle over some sea salt. Step 4: Bake Preheat the oven to 180°C fan forced (355°F). Bake the pie for 40 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 160°C fan forced (320°F) and cook for a further 15 minutes, until deep golden on top. Place the pie on a wire rack to cool completely in the tin. Slice the pie into wedges to serve.

James notes that he was arrested twice for car theft. 01:46 Dissolve to flash back. James and friends play a pickup basketball game in a public park. They spot a 1967 Pontiac Bonneville convertible parked nearby. The keys are in the ignition, so they decide to take it for joy ride. 03:45 The three boys ride though the Southeast neighborhood of Washington, DC. One discovers in the glove box a transistor radio and pockets it. 04;15 The owner of the Pontiac emerges from his home and discovers his car is stolen. He calls the police and reports the theft to an officer in the communications center. 05:30 A patrolman arrives at the man’s house and makes a report. The Pontiac crashes into a parked car at 36th Place and U Street. One of the kids bangs his head and is bleeding. The patrol car quickly arrives at the scene, calls in an update on the pursuit and requests an ambulance. 11:17 The call center officer confirms the transmission, relays the news to all units, and calls for the ambulance. 11:35 The police read the youths their rights and handcuff them. But there is increasing challenge to this notion, with figures from Obama to Tim Berners-Lee warning that Big Tech poses serious threats to autonomy and freedom. As a result, many now argue we need to escape from Big Tech and its addictive character. But it's unknown if this is achievable. Critics argue Big Tech, through algorithms and data, manipulates our actions and choices in every aspect of our lives, so that human autonomy has already been radically undermined. Opting out is almost impossible. And Cambridge studies show anti-tech platforms, claiming to combat Big Tech addiction, often only replicate it in another form. Should we conclude that technology has undermined our freedom and we are no longer in control of our decisions and behaviour? Do we need to evolve digital rights to resist manipulation and provide self-governance, and will this work?
