What becomes of a nation filled with corruption that’s covered with gold. Professor David Blight returns to Mark Twain as he details the Gilded Age and what it brings. Recorded in Yale’s Battell Chapel. This one-time-only course examines U.S. history from 1776 to the present, in advance of the nation’s semiquincentennial (or 250th birthday) in 2026. Taught jointly by Professors Joanne Freeman, David Blight, and Beverly Gage, the course emphasizes the history of the nation-state and the contested nature of American national identity. All three scholars will deliver the course’s first and final lectures together, as an introduction and a wrap-up. In between, they will each deliver eight lectures individually based on their areas of expertise.   Joanne Freeman, the Alan Boles, Class of 1929 Professor of History and American Studies, and an expert in the revolutionary and early national periods of American history, will cover the period from the Revolution up through the 1830s, touching on such topics as the birth of party politics, the nature of “Jacksonian democracy,” and the rise of the reform and protest movements. David Blight, Sterling Professor of History and African American Studies and one of the country’s foremost authorities on the history of slavery and the Civil War, will cover the Civil War era up through Reconstruction and the emergence of the Jim Crow laws. Beverly Gage, John Lewis Gaddis Professor of History, who is currently writing a book on the nation’s past to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, will pick up in the 1890s and continue through the end of the 20th century, addressing debates around immigration, wealth inequality, and the creation of the social welfare state.  The course explores U.S. political history broadly conceived–not just as a realm of presidents and elections and wars (though there will be plenty of those) but as a conversation across time between citizens about what the United States is, was, and was meant to be. It proceeds from the premise that the American Revolution was the first but not the last radical act of national reimagining in U.S. history. *ENGLISH BELOW* Dit keer mogen we binnenkijken bij Lydia, die samen met haar katten Tommie en Nimis – beter bekend als de online ster ‘The Police Cat’ - op een woonboot midden in het hart van Amsterdam woont. Lydia geniet enorm van het vrije gevoel dat de boot haar geeft en is ontzettend blij met haar buurtje. Het is groen, rustig, alles is in de buurt en de buren zijn ontzettend lief. Zo stond ook de hele buurt voor Lydia klaar toen zij een paar jaar geleden een ernstige hersenbloeding kreeg en voor lange tijd in het ziekenhuis belandde. Er werd een appgroep opgericht door de buren om haar te helpen met dagelijkse dingen en zorgden er zelfs voor dat haar B&B aan de andere kant van de boot gewoon kon blijven doorgaan. Da’s nou eens echt een goeie buur(t). Inmiddels gaat het gelukkig een stuk beter met Lydia, en wordt er regelmatig gezellig met de buren koffie gedronken in de stadstuin op de kade, of binnen in de boot. Sowieso is het een gezellige bedoeling want omdat The Police Cat zoveel fans heeft, lopen er ook regelmatig groepen toeristen langs in de hoop een glimp van de beroemde kat op te vangen. Dat Nimis zo’n ster werd was overigens puur toeval. Toen Lydia’s jonge nichtjes af en toe op social media mochten, besloot ze daar voor hen filmpjes van kat Nimis in zwemvest te plaatsen. Totaal tegen ieders verwachting in, werd dat al snel een wereldwijde online hit, waarvan een aantal video’s tientallen miljoenen keren zijn (en worden) bekeken. En de politie? Die werkt met liefde af en toe mee in de video’s. *ENGLISH* This time FC Centrum is getting a peek inside Lydia's home. She lives on a houseboat in the heart of Amsterdam with her cats Tommie and Nimis – better known as the online star @policecatamsterdam. Lydia thoroughly enjoys the sense of freedom the boat gives her and is incredibly happy with her neighborhood. It's green, quiet, everything is close by, and the neighbors are incredibly kind. A few years ago, the entire neighborhood was there for Lydia when she suffered a serious stroke and ended up in the hospital for an extended period. They even made sure her B&B on the other side of the boat could continue running smoothly, so no guests had to be canceled. Now that's a truly good neighborhood, right? Lydia is thankfully doing much better now, and she regularly enjoys coffee with the neighbors in the city garden on the quay or inside the boat. It's always a pleasant experience, because The Police Cat has so many fans that groups of tourists regularly pass by, hoping to catch a glimpse of the famous cat. That Nimis became such a star was purely coincidental by the way. When Lydia's young nieces were allowed to use social media occasionally, she decided to post videos of Nimis in her life jacket for them. Combine the chocolate and butter in a medium saucepan and place over low heat. Stir until melted and combined, then remove from the heat. Combine the sugar, eggs and vanilla and whisk until smooth. Add the chocolate butter mixture and whisk again until well combined. Whisk in the sifted flour, cocoa and salt. Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 22-25 minutes, until just set on top. Set aside for 10 mins. Step 2: Make the filling Set aside enough of the whole pecans to decorate the top in a concentric pattern, then finely chop the remainder in a small food processor. Melt the chocolate and butter in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring until smooth. Remove from the heat and whisk in the coffee. In a large bowl, whisk the sugar, milk powder, eggs and golden syrup, until smooth. Slowly whisk in the chocolate butter mixture, then fold in the chopped pecans. Pour the mixture over the brownie base, then make a pattern of pecans on the top. Bake for 35-38 mins, until just set on top with a little wobble in the centre still. Let the pie cool for 1 hour before lifting out of the tin with the baking paper handles. Slice into wedges and serve with ice cream. #brownie #baking #dessert
