Holiday shopping this season may look different than years past, as tariffs gradually increase prices on everything from electronics to kids’ toys. If you usually wait until Black Friday to find deep discounts, you may want to update your strategy this year.  Wirecutter’s deputy editor Annemarie Conte joins us to discuss how tariffs are impacting the prices on a range of goods, and how to plan for your holiday shopping accordingly. It was made by low-budget filmmaker and perennial Hollywood underdog Edgar G. Ulmer. Ulmer also directed several other educational health shorts for the National Tuberculosis Association (NTA), an organization founded in the early 1900s to raise money to combat TB. The Navajo Indian school which is shown in the film was one of the infamous American Indian boarding schools, possibly the Chinle Boarding School, at Chinle, Arizona. 0:41-1:42: The narrator describes the history of American Indians, their diverse tribes, and their bravery in facing enemies. The DeVane Lectures, America at 250: A History. Class 15 “ The Defeat of Reconstruction, 1870-1877 and Beyond” The Presidential election of 1868 was the first after the Civil War and the first where freed slaves could vote. The 1860s and 1870s are explored by Professor David Blight. Recorded in Yale’s Battell Chapel. This one-time-only course examines U.S. history from 1776 to the present, in advance of the nation’s semiquincentennial (or 250th birthday) in 2026. Taught jointly by Professors Joanne Freeman, David Blight, and Beverly Gage, the course emphasizes the history of the nation-state and the contested nature of American national identity. All three scholars will deliver the course’s first and final lectures together, as an introduction and a wrap-up. In between, they will each deliver eight lectures individually based on their areas of expertise.   Joanne Freeman, the Alan Boles, Class of 1929 Professor of History and American Studies, and an expert in the revolutionary and early national periods of American history, will cover the period from the Revolution up through the 1830s, touching on such topics as the birth of party politics, the nature of “Jacksonian democracy,” and the rise of the reform and protest movements. David Blight, Sterling Professor of History and African American Studies and one of the country’s foremost authorities on the history of slavery and the Civil War, will cover the Civil War era up through Reconstruction and the emergence of the Jim Crow laws. Beverly Gage, John Lewis Gaddis Professor of History, who is currently writing a book on the nation’s past to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, will pick up in the 1890s and continue through the end of the 20th century, addressing debates around immigration, wealth inequality, and the creation of the social welfare state.  The course explores U.S. political history broadly conceived–not just as a realm of presidents and elections and wars (though there will be plenty of those) but as a conversation across time between citizens about what the United States is, was, and was meant to be. It proceeds from the premise that the American Revolution was the first but not the last radical act of national reimagining in U.S. history. A NOTE FROM THE PERFORMER Joaquín Turina's second work for solo guitar is a hypnotic and seductive rondo, in which the two worlds that define the composer's musical identity - his Andalusian roots and his fascination with Parisian culture - are closer than ever. Everything begins with a soft evocation of the characteristic rhythm of the "fandango", the generative cell from which the entire musical discourse unfolds. Paradoxically, among the three themes of the "Fandanguillo", the main one is also the most fragile - hesitant in its chromatic and measured motion, as if reluctantly forced to take on the structural role assigned to it. Yet this mysterious theme prepares the ground for the two episodes in which the composition truly takes flight: the first more dance-like, the second more sensual, leading to the burst of virtuosity that precedes the final recapitulation. In this recording, I follow the text of the first edition of the piece, published by Schott in 1926. The only exception concerns the execution of the natural harmonics, for which I chose to restore the version of Turina's autograph manuscript, where they are written an octave lower than in the Segovia edition.
