The Christophers are a Christian inspirational movement founded in 1945 by Father James Keller to promote positive societal action and Christian values. The production was in part an outgrowth of the Cold War, as it definitely has an anti-Communist, pro-faith, patriotic message. It features comedian Jack Benny and some of his celebrity friends, who listen to Father Keller discuss the organization and its focus on persuading young people to pursue public service careers. According to press about the film, it was made after Keller asked his friend, director Leo McCarey to help produce it. Stars quickly volunteered their services -- Bing Crosby sang a song, Bob Hope did a telephone sequence, and the stars, director, cameramen, producers and others contributed at least half a million dollars' worth of free time. Father Keller discusses the purpose of the Christophers— to get more people into teaching, government, writing, labor, social service, and library work— and his desire to make movies (3:39). The guests discuss the movement’s purpose and Father Keller answers their questions (4:00). He references the Declaration of Independence (6:22); Paul quotes the “when in the course of human events” part of the Declaration (6:55). Father Keller picks up a copy of the Declaration, pointing out its references to God, and Paul continues reciting the Declaration preamble (7:45). The guests agree to join the Christopher movement (21:46). Rochester tells Father Keller songwriters Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Houston are there and have written a song he could use (22:35).
