De werkzaamheden aan de Linnaeusstraat in Oost hebben al maanden een grote impact op fietsers. Een deel van hen rijdt daarom over de stoep en daar zijn voetgangers niet altijd blij mee. Een paar weken geleden is de gemeente begonnen met het werk aan een ander deel van de Linnaeusstraat, het deel tussen de Eerste Van Swindenstraat en de Tweede Van Swindenstraat. Daar wordt nu veelvuldig over het voor voetgangers bedoelde zebrapad gereden. "Als voetganger heb ik wel last van fietsers die rakelings langs je heen schieten en het geeft me een onprettig gevoel", zegt een man die een vrouw in een rolstoel helpt. Veel fietsers hebben zelf ook een onprettig gevoel. "Ik vind het heel erg. Want het duurt nog heel lang. En we kunnen niet oversteken. Niet zoals we willen." Een andere fietser: "Het hoort bij de algemene ellende met het opbreken van de route. Iedere keer is het weer een beetje anders. Iedere keer is het toch weer spannend hoe je thuiskomt. Het lukt uiteindelijk altijd wel." Sticker De gemeente heeft een heel groot aantal borden met omleidingsroutes neergezet en ook borden waarop staat dat fietsers moeten afstappen. Twee van die borden zijn aangepast. Waar eerst 'fietsers afstappen stond', staat nu een gele sticker met 'is te gast' erop. Een stel dat in de buurt woont denkt niet dat de gemeente dit heeft gedaan. "Als mensen hun eigen verkeersborden gaan maken, dan wordt het een Poolse landdag, is mijn idee", zegt een van de twee buurtbewoners. "En dat is hier wel gebeurd. Mensen maken hun eigen regels. Dus het is een rommelige fase waar we in zitten." In het noordwesten van Oekraïne zijn in de buurt van een grensovergang met Polen een tankstation en enkele vrachtwagens in brand gevlogen na een Russische droneaanval. Dat gebeurde op minder dan een kilometer van de grens. Door de aanval werd de grensovergang vannacht tijdelijk gesloten, maar intussen kan het verkeer er weer door. De Poolse autoriteiten laten ook weten dat geen enkele Russische drone het Poolse luchtruim is binnengevlogen. Elders werd ook een treinlocomotief geraakt, op 2 kilometer van de Poolse grens. Het gaat om een trein die Warschau als bestemming had. Er raakte niemand gewond. De Oekraïense minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Andri Sybiha waarschuwt de Europese buren. "Dit is Poetins terreur die rechtstreeks op de deuren van de EU en de NAVO klopt. De Russische barbaren staan aan jullie poort, beste partners", schrijft hij op X. Rusland vuurde vannacht meer dan 450 drones af op Oekraïne. De Oekraïense luchtmacht kon er naar eigen zeggen iets meer dan 400 uit de lucht halen. Op 13 verschillende locaties werden er inslagen waargenomen. Op 7 verschillende plaatsen waren er inslagen door vallende brokstukken van uit de lucht geschoten drones. Kimchi Cheese Omelette Ingredients - 60g kimchi - 3 eggs - 4 spring onions - salt to taste - 1 tbsp peanut or neutral-flavoured oil - 50g grated cheddar cheese - 1 cup steamed jasmine rice Method 1. Squeeze the kimchi and save the juice in a medium bowl. Crack the eggs into the bowl with the kimchi juice. 2. Finely slice the green tops of the spring onions and add to the bowl with the eggs. Slice the white stem about 1cm thick and set aside. 3. Add 1/4 tsp salt to the bowl with the eggs and whisk. 4. Place a carbon steel or stainless steel pan over medium heat and add the oil. Add the kimchi, spring onion whites and fry for 1 minute. 5. Add in the egg mixture, stir and tap the pan on the stovetop to release any air pockets. Leave for 30 seconds. 6. Add the cheese over the whole surface of the omelette. Turn the heat down to medium/low for two minutes. Flip the omelette in half over itself. Make sure the egg is cooked through, before turning out onto a bed of steamed rice.

The film captures a point in early radio history when rapid innovations were taking place. It includes footage of a Fleming type tube, early portable radios including the RCA Radiola 26 Portable Super-Heterodyne, oscillators and large radio telephone transmitters. In the 1920’s radio tubes, also known as ‘vacuum tubes’, were replacing crystal sets. The film also explores crystal detectors using a galena crystal, how oscillators produce radio frequency currents as well as the transmission of images using wireless telegraphy systems. It also shows the sending of photographs by wire, aka wirephoto, telephotography, or radiophoto. This process, which became prominent in the 1920s, allowed news agencies to transmit images over telephone, telegraph, or radio lines, significantly speeding up the delivery of visual news to newspapers across the country. 0:00 Film opens with a Fleming valve type radio tube (:22). These were considered to be the first thermionic vacuum tube invented by John Fleming in 1904. The tube acted as a detector for radio waves as it converted alternating currents of radio signals into a direct current. A series of title cards and diagrams begin to explain processes occurring within the tube. The filament is heated by electricity created by a battery (:33). Type “A” batteries powered the filaments, while “B” batteries enabled a stronger voltage for the plates. The location of the filament (:36), battery (:42) and vacuum are highlighted (:46). Electrons are thrown from the heated filament (:56). A plate surrounds the filament (1:04) connected to it’s battery (1:12). The plate holds a positive charge (1:17). Negatively charged electrons move towards the positively charged plate (1:32). Footage shows the current flowing in one direction due to the arrangement (1:37). A grid is set between the filament and plate (1:54). A diagram shows the new arrangement (2:10) noting location of the grid (2:15) and grid batteries (2:19). Weak currents produce a negative grid (2:23). Strong plate currents enable a positive grid (2:30). Currents are amplified through properly connected tubes (3:08). Credits acknowledge Western Electric Co. of NYC and RCA (3:22). Western operated from 1869 to 1996 as a subsidiary of AT&T. They were the primary manufacturer, supplier and purchasing agent for Bell System’s telephone equipment. RCA is a company with significant history founded in 1919 in an effort to monopolize the emerging radio industry. Examples feature a situation where the waves of a broadcast station are cut off (3:26) and where the radio frequency is induced in an aerial circuit (3:46). Another example shows the crystal detector (4:09) using a galena crystal (4:15). Crystal sets were popular and cheap for consumers. They would become obsolete by the mid-1920’s replaced by the vacuum tube and it’s powerful amplification abilities. The current flows in one direction through the crystal (4:26). Currents pulsating through “phones” (5:05) produce sound waves (5:10). A man and woman tune their RCA Radiola 26 Portable Super-Heterodyne radio (5:30). This was considered to be the first truly portable radio and weighed 25 lbs. Footage shows the radio tubes within (5:48). The oscillator produces radio frequency currents beginning with the power source connected to the oscillator (5:57). Oscillators enabled the selection of desired stations and were used as transmitters to create a carrier wave for broadcasting purposes. Amplification of oscillator output (6:47) and the effect of the addition of an Audion (8:05). Radio equipment used to transmit photographs (8:23). A negative is set over a glass cylinder (8:28). A broadcasting station featuring a large generator (8:44), amplifiers (8:49) and an oscillator (9:07). Large transmitting tubes are water cooled (9:19) Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
