The Mexican - American War from 1846-1848 had an immense impact on the territory of America and the issue of slavery. Professor David Blight begins his series of classes with an in depth review. Recorded in Yale’s Battell Chapel. This one-time-only course examines U.S. history from 1776 to the present, in advance of the nation’s semiquincentennial (or 250th birthday) in 2026. Taught jointly by Professors Joanne Freeman, David Blight, and Beverly Gage, the course emphasizes the history of the nation-state and the contested nature of American national identity. All three scholars will deliver the course’s first and final lectures together, as an introduction and a wrap-up. In between, they will each deliver eight lectures individually based on their areas of expertise.   Joanne Freeman, the Alan Boles, Class of 1929 Professor of History and American Studies, and an expert in the revolutionary and early national periods of American history, will cover the period from the Revolution up through the 1830s, touching on such topics as the birth of party politics, the nature of “Jacksonian democracy,” and the rise of the reform and protest movements. David Blight, Sterling Professor of History and African American Studies and one of the country’s foremost authorities on the history of slavery and the Civil War, will cover the Civil War era up through Reconstruction and the emergence of the Jim Crow laws. Beverly Gage, John Lewis Gaddis Professor of History, who is currently writing a book on the nation’s past to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, will pick up in the 1890s and continue through the end of the 20th century, addressing debates around immigration, wealth inequality, and the creation of the social welfare state.  The course explores U.S. political history broadly conceived–not just as a realm of presidents and elections and wars (though there will be plenty of those) but as a conversation across time between citizens about what the United States is, was, and was meant to be. In Nederland kampen naar schatting 420.000 mensen met langdurige klachten na een besmetting met het coronavirus. Voor velen betekent long covid dat ze niet meer kunnen werken zoals voorheen. Vooral zelfstandigen en ondernemers worden hard geraakt, omdat zij afhankelijk zijn van een arbeidsongeschiktheidsverzekering. Wie door long covid niet meer kan werken, wendt zich vaak tot de verzekeraar voor een uitkering. Maar in de praktijk blijkt dat proces complex en voor veel patiënten uiterst frustrerend. Tientallen ondernemers vertellen Zembla dat hun ziekte door verzekeraars niet serieus wordt genomen. Hun klachten worden bestempeld als psychisch of als niet medisch objectiveerbaar. Daardoor komen ze niet in aanmerking voor een uitkering. Voor deze groep betekent dat niet alleen een verlies aan inkomen, maar ook het wegvallen van hun bestaanszekerheid. Volgens David Putrino, long-covidonderzoeker aan het Mount Sinai-ziekenhuis in New York, is het een medische misdiagnose om de ziekte als psychisch te beschouwen. Hij stelt dat de wetenschap inmiddels duidelijk is: long covid is geen psychische aandoening, maar een biologische ziekte met een breed scala aan symptomen. Mensen met long covid ervaren uiteenlopende klachten: extreme vermoeidheid, concentratie- en geheugenproblemen, kortademigheid en pijn. Putrino benadrukt dat de ziekte zich bij iedereen anders kan uiten en dat er inmiddels honderden symptomen bekend zijn. Toch stuiten patiënten bij verzekeringsartsen vaak op scepsis. De artsen moeten beoordelen in hoeverre iemand beperkt is, maar kunnen de ziekte moeilijk vaststellen omdat er nog geen specifieke medische test bestaat die long covid kan aantonen. In de polisvoorwaarden van arbeidsongeschiktheidsverzekeringen staat vaak dat een ziekte medisch objectief moet zijn vastgesteld. Omdat long covid nog niet via een bloedtest of scan te bewijzen is, ligt de beoordeling grotendeels in handen van de verzekeringsarts. Die moet vertrouwen op het verhaal van de patiënt en de medische kennis die op dat moment beschikbaar is. Volgens Putrino is luisteren essentieel: “Het begint bij geloven wat iemand je vertelt.” Toch ontbreekt die deskundigheid soms, zegt hij. Sommige beoordelaars zouden volgens hem gebruikmaken van de onduidelijkheden in de wetenschap om niet te hoeven uitkeren. Ook Nederlandse artsen waarschuwen voor de gevolgen van deze aanpak. Longarts Merel Hellemons van het Erasmus MC zegt dat de voortdurende strijd met de verzekeraar schadelijk kan zijn voor het herstel van patiënten. De stress en overbelasting kunnen ervoor zorgen dat klachten verergeren, en soms zelfs blijvend worden. Voor veel mensen betekent dat een verslechtering van hun gezondheid én hun financiële situatie. Sommige ondernemers vertellen Zembla dat hun bedrijf is omgevallen of dat ze hun huis moesten verkopen. Ze wachten soms jaren op een besluit, zonder inkomen of met minimale ondersteuning. Advocaat Harry Blok bevestigt dat beeld: hij ziet cliënten die arbeidsongeschikt zijn, maar desondanks geen uitkering ontvangen en toch moeten blijven werken om rond te komen. Zembla vroeg de grootste arbeidsongeschiktheidsverzekeraars van Nederland, a.s.r. en Movir, om een reactie. a.s.r. laat weten dat er honderden gevallen zijn waarin verzekerden met long covid wél een uitkering ontvangen, omdat ze niet kunnen werken. Movir zegt het overgrote deel van de post-covidclaims uit te keren. Maar op de vraag hoeveel procent van de long-covidpatiënten daadwerkelijk een uitkering krijgt, geven de verzekeraars geen duidelijk antwoord. Plannen in het verkiezingsprogramma van JA21 komen niet overeen met plannen die de partij inleverde bij het Centraal Planbureau (CPB) om te laten doorrekenen. In Nieuwsuur weerlegt lijsttrekker Joost Eerdmans de verschillen niet. "De doorrekening is een project apart", zegt hij. Maatregelen die de overheid veel geld kosten, heeft JA21 niet (volledig) laten doorrekenen. Voor wonen en infrastructuur reserveert de partij in het partijprogramma ruim 12 miljard euro. Daar blijft in de doorrekening 500 miljoen euro van over voor infrastructuur.
