Unpack one of the most profound questions in Christian theology: Who precisely uttered the cry, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" on the cross? This short dives into the deep theological water, drawing from the Council of Chalcedon and the Fifth Ecumenical Council in Constantinople (553 AD). The key issue addressed is the heresy of Nestorianism, which suggested a division between Christ's human and divine natures. The essential Christological principle is that natures do not act—persons do. The divine nature is incapable of suffering, but the human nature is capable. The crucial point is that the Person who possesses both is God the Son, the divine person. The integrity of the Incarnation requires that the Person born is the same Person who died. The council unequivocally declared that the One crucified was one of the members of the Holy Trinity. Today, we call this doctrine Theopaschitism (God-suffering), clarifying that the Son himself, God himself, suffered as a man. There is no division because the person is the same. Our salvation is rooted in the sufficient work of God himself.
