In this short, winemaker Wynand Lategan shares the story of the first ever Pinotage wine. Pinotage was created in 1925 by Professor Perold, but it wasn’t until 1961 that the first wine was bottled—under the Lenz Moser label from grapes grown at Bellevue. Wynand explains how that original vineyard, planted in 1953, still exists today, and how he spent a decade convincing Bellevue to let him recreate the wine. The result? A relaunch in 2019, exactly 60 years after the world’s first Pinotage. Expect aromas of fynbos, spice, and a taste of South Africa’s terroir, crafted with gentle hands from 70-year-old vines.

Maple Bacon Popcorn Ingredients 4 rashes smoked bacon 125ml (½ cup) maple syrup 1 tbsp canola/vegetable oil 100g (½ cup) popcorn kernels sea salt, to season Method Step 1: Prep the bacon Preheat the oven to 140°C fan forced (285°F). Place bacon on a wire rack over a tray and bake for 45-55 mins, until fat has rendered and the bacon is crisp. Drain off the fat into a bowl and crumble the bacon into another bowl. Step 2: Make the maple sugar Boil maple syrup in a medium saucepan to 128C (262F), then stir a further 1 minute off the heat. Beat the mixture with 1 beater, until crystallised, then pass through a fine sieve (you should have at least 2 tablespoons). If you have chunky bits that don’t go through, blitz them in a food processor and then pass them through the sieve. Step 3: Cook the popcorn Place the bacon fat and oil in a wide, deep saucepan and place over medium high heat. Add the popcorn kernels, and half the sugar and cover with a tight fitting lid. Cook, shaking pan back and forth occasionally, until popcorn begins to pop. Continue cooking until you hear no more popping, then remove from the heat. Quickly add the bacon and remaining sugar and cover again. Shake to combine. Step 4: Finish and serve Transfer the popcorn to a large bowl and season with some salt. Toss well until fully incorporated then serve immediately.

Verschillende reformatorische en islamitische scholen dragen bepaalde boodschappen uit die botsen met democratische waarden als gelijkheid en verdraagzaamheid. Dit komt naar voren na onderzoek van Nieuwsuur. Scholen zijn verplicht om kinderen over democratische waarden te leren en deze ook na te leven in de praktijk. Maar op basis van artikel 23 van de grondwet hebben scholen ook de vrijheid om daar religieuze boodschappen naast te plaatsen. Volgens deskundigen leidt dit tot "dubbele boodschappen" die lastig te volgen zijn voor kinderen, en in sommige gevallen haaks staan op democratische waarden.
