Goed nieuws: voor een duurzame en sociale samenleving hoeven we niet te wachten op Den Haag. De transitie van Nederland is al lang bezig en eigenlijk ook niet meer te stoppen. Dat concludeert journalist en geograaf Floor Milikowski, die voor haar boek Contouren van een nieuw land kriskras door Nederland reisde op zoek naar verfrissende ideeën en nieuwe manieren van leven. In het spoor van pioniers en vooruitgangdenkers ziet ze hoe geleidelijk aan een meer duurzame, sociale en verbonden samenleving ontstaat. Zo dwingt het veranderende klimaat ons vanzelf om ons aan te passen aan het landschap. ‘We zijn gaan wonen in beekdalen en rivierdalen, en zijn vervolgens heel gepikeerd dat daar af en toe water doorheen stroomt,’ zo haalt Milikowski landschapsarchitect Harro de Jong aan. We dachten dat we het landschap hadden opgelost. Dat water geen factor meer was, omdat we het hadden afgedamd, omgeleid of weggepompt. Maar met een veranderend klimaat keert de natuur terug in haar oude ritme. Nederland is zo dicht bebouwd, ontgonnen en georganiseerd dat we nauwelijks nog ruimte over hebben gelaten voor natuurlijke processen. En nu wreekt zich dat. Elke centimeter grond is benut - voor wonen, landbouw of infrastructuur - en dus botst het als rivieren weer buiten hun oevers treden of de bodem zakt in veengebieden. Het tijd is om opnieuw te kijken naar wat een landschap ons eigenlijk vertelt: wat kan er op een plek wél, en wat niet? Terug naar de kaart, niet met de pen van de planoloog, maar met het oog van de ecoloog. Het mooie is: veel verandert al. Gemeenschappen, ondernemers en ontwerpers nemen het voortouw. Ze passen hun omgeving aan, geven water weer ruimte, kiezen voor ander landgebruik of bouwen klimaatadaptief. Vaak kleinschalig, maar wel effectief. Durven we te erkennen dat we niet overal de baas zijn over het landschap?
