The film begins with the grace and thrill of sailing yachts , showcasing large America's Cup yacht race defenders like the Ranger or the Endeavor breaking out enormous balloon spinnakers in competitive races. It notes that the thrill of sailboat racing isn't just for professionals, suggesting that small Rainbow or Star class boats offer more fun, and that more girls are taking up sailing . 1:19-1:40: Women's Athletics and Rowing / Crew. Modern girls are more athletic than in the past. It showcases the strength required for rowing, calling it a great sport and "a great exercise for reducing" . 1:40-2:05: Speedboats and Outboards. This water sport offers "zip and dash." Speedboats and outboards have been known to hit over 60 MPH , with motors roaring as "fearless, reckless" daredevils ride the waves and hit curves at breakneck speed. 2:05-3:16: Aquaplaning/Water Skiing. Aquaplaning, once exclusive to Waikiki, is now universal. It's a thrilling sport that requires a lot of practice and absolute balance . The film shows three men stunting (even upside down), and girls riding piggyback on an aquaplane, noting that the faster they go, the greater the thrill. 3:17-3:40: Dog Aquaplaning. A novel stunt shows a girl first taking her dog out to build confidence, followed by the dog making a solo flight on the board, demonstrating instinctive balance. 3:40-4:12: Fishing. A brief, comedic segment shows a "Fisherman's Paradise" where fish are so abundant that they are easily caught, with some fish even jumping right into the boat (attributed to a trick camera). 4:13-4:31: Rough Water Sport/Medicine Ball. A "rough water sport" is showcased by throwing a great big medicine ball into a swimming pool with about 100 people, resulting in a chaotic and fun scene. 4:31-5:03: Nostalgia/Forbidden Swim. The film shifts to nostalgic memories of sneaking a swim at the "Forbidden water hole" with childhood friends like Skinny, Red, Fatty, and Dopey. 5:03-6:03: Diving. Expert divers demonstrate perfect form, emphasizing that the less splash the better the dive . Diving requires timing, stance, balance, and perfect control of every muscle . Olympic champions practice for years. 6:03-7:09: Backstroke and Formation Swimming. Backstroke swimming is a comparatively recent addition to competitive water sports. Girls demonstrate perfect backstroke technique with grace and rhythm. The segment culminates in a demonstration of formation swimming (like "living statues"), including making an "animated snowflake" and a star formation ("real Hollywood stuff"). 7:09-7:30: Homemade Water Rodeo. A "homemade rodeo" is suggested as a fun stunt: suspending a mattress (the horse's body) and a pillow/broom (head/tail) across the water to create a bucking bronco experience, complete with a good ducking. 7:30-8:43: Underwater Exploration. The film shifts to looking underwater. Girls on a glass-bottom boat investigate, only to find a shy turtle. Underwater sequences shot at Cypress Gardens in Florida, of women swimming underwater. The segment ends with the girls using "nature's beauty parlor" underwater -- getting their hair done in the depths. The End. Loui Ridi, a Palestinian American who lives in Ohio, traveled to the occupied West Bank on Monday to help relatives defend their family home in the village of Qusra, south of Nablus. Israeli settlers have surrounded the home, which Ridi owns, for more than a week. Settlers have besieged several Palestinian houses in the village, trapping people inside and cutting off water and electricity in some cases. "The IDF is not even making it better here,” says Ridi, who joins Democracy Now! from the occupied West Bank. “They're not allowing us to leave the house. They're not allowing anyone to come to my house freely," says Ridi, explaining that getting food to the house takes "hours, if not days."

The Moche flourished in a narrow strip between the Pacific Ocean and the Andres mountains of Peru for 650 years (100-750 AD). Sometimes referred to as the 'Greeks of the Andes', the Moche may have founded the first South American state. Their culture was contemporary with the Nazca civilisation but through conquest and expansion they were able to accumulate the wealth and power necessary to become the most important pre-Incan culture. Despite desert conditions, they created a prosperous agricultural civilisation: their engineers building canals up to 32 km long to irrigate the land. Their temples and monuments include enormous pyramid mounds which dominate the landscape to this day. But their society is short-lived and around the 6th century AD, the Moche succumb to a series of disasters that lead to the end of their culture. Van Erem said in her complaint that the government's probes into schools like Harvard, Brown and Columbia were "an unlawful process designed to achieve predetermined political goals." "Columbia affiliates, from the Board of Trustees down, have actually collaborated with the federal government in these sham investigations," says Marianna Hirsch, professor emerita at Columbia University. "These were not probes into antisemitism accusations, but they were efforts to dismantle higher education brick by brick." Columbia and Brown settled with the administration for $200 million and $50 million, respectively. Harvard refused to settle, and a judge threw out the case against the university. Tegelijk spreekt Trump opvallend positief over Kim Jong-un.

The settlers "can act like this because of the active support from the Israeli government that gives them weapons, gives them ATVs," says Israeli reporter Oren Ziv, who has traveled to Qusra twice in recent days. Ziv says the Israeli government also supports "the establishment of more and more [settler] outposts that are kind of front bases for these terror attacks." Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt Israel's military on Wednesday admitted that its soldiers opened fire in January 2024 on a car trying to flee Gaza City following Israel's evacuation orders. The car was carrying 5-year-old Palestinian Hind Rajab and six of her relatives. They were all killed, as were Palestine Red Crescent Society medics dispatched to rescue them. The Israeli military said it would also investigate the killing of 15 Palestinian paramedics whose bodies and crushed emergency vehicles were recovered from a mass grave in Rafah in March 2025. It made no mention of thousands of other incidents where Palestinian civilians were killed by Israeli forces. "This seems to be nothing more than political theater," says Sharif Abdel Kouddous, the Middle East and North Africa editor at Drop Site News. He was a correspondent on the Al Jazeera Fault Lines documentary The Night Won't End that investigated the killings of civilians in Gaza by the Israeli military, including Hind Rajab. "Israel's internal investigations into the criminal conduct of its own soldiers … can't be regarded as credible mechanisms for accountability," says Abdel Kouddous. "They instead function primarily to shield Israel from international tribunals or prosecution abroad." At Ridge Vineyards, some of the Zinfandel vines at Lytton Springs are around 125 years old. Ryan Johnson explains why these historic vines can produce such distinctive fruit, from uneven berry sizes and different skin-to-juice ratios to the lower yields and unique character that come with vine age. Jimmy Smith also reflects on these remarkable old vines as living pieces of vineyard architecture that have survived more than a century of history. #RidgeVineyards #Zinfandel #OldVines #LyttonSprings #CaliforniaWine #WineWithJimmy

Trader Joe's is beloved for its quirky snacks and frozen meals, but its beauty aisle has quietly become a hotspot for budget-friendly skincare and viral "dupes". This week, beauty writer Neha Tandon shares the results of her extensive hands-on testing of Trader Joe’s moisturizers, cleansers, serums, and sunscreens. She reveals which $10-and-under products are high-performing gems and which popular items missed the mark. This episode covers: • The $4 Holy Grail: Why the Rose Facial Toner is a highly versatile, multi-use must-have for refreshing skin, setting makeup, and even reviving curly hair. • A $7 designer "dupe": How the single-ingredient Marula Facial Oil performs just as beautifully as luxury versions costing six times as much. • The absolute misses: Why Neha suggests skipping the "Pine-Sol-esque" tea tree oil cleansing pads and the snotty-textured Hyaluronic Moisture Boost Serum. • Better alternatives: Superior options for exfoliating pads and vitamin C serums if you want to upgrade your skincare routine. Products we recommend: • Rose Water Facial Toner (https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/out/link/83027/241859/57/261199) • Marula Facial Oil (https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/out/link/83030/241862/57/261200) • Retinol Night Serum (https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/out/link/69572/215196/57/261201) • Daily Facial Sunscreen SPF 40 (https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/out/link/52329/183961/57/261202) • Instead of Trader Joe's Natural Facial Cleansing Pads, try Pacifica Glow Baby Brightening Peel Pads (https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/out/link/69648/215329/57/261203) • Instead of Trader Joe's Hyaluronic Moisture Boost Serum, try Timeless Skin Care 20% C + E Ferulic Acid Serum (https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/out/link/69675/215363/57/261204) Additional reading: • We Tested All the Skin-Care Products at Trader Joe’s to Find the Best (https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-trader-joes-skin-care/?utm_source=the_wirecutter_show&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=episode_number_118) • This Trader Joe’s Sunscreen May Be Even Better Than Its Much Pricier Counterpart (https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/trader-joes-daily-facial-sunscreen-review/?utm_source=the_wirecutter_show&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=episode_number_118) • The 7 Best Retinol Products of 2026 (https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-retinol-products/?utm_source=the_wirecutter_show&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=episode_number_118) • The 5 Best Exfoliants of 2026 (https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-exfoliants/?utm_source=the_wirecutter_show&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=episode_number_118) We independently review everything we recommend. What is it about a bookstore? You walk in planning to browse for a few minutes, and somehow an hour later you’re still wandering the stacks with an armful of books you can’t seem to put down. For this week’s episode, our guest host, MJ Franklin, and the producer Sarah Diamond take a field trip to a local bookstore, McNally Jackson Seaport, at the southern tip of Manhattan. There, they talk with the owner, Sarah McNally, about what it’s actually like to run a bookstore. Then MJ sits down with Jennifer Harlan, an editor at the Book Review, to talk about The Times’s new bookstore crawl series (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/07/29/books/bookstores-midtown-manhattan-nyc.html) , the bookstores she grew up loving and why bookshops seem to be having a moment. Of course, no bookstore episode would be complete without some book recommendations. MJ and Jen share some of their favorite books about bookstores and booksellers, including a romance set in a small-town bookshop and a memoir about living inside Shakespeare and Company in Paris. Books discussed on this episode: “Switzy,” by Emma Cline “Delicate Edible Birds,” by Lauren Groff “Book Lovers,” by Emily Henry “Monogamy,” by Sue Miller “Time Was Soft There: A Paris Sojourn at Shakespeare and Co.,” by Jeremy Mercer “The Bookshop: A History of the American Bookstore,” by Evan Friss “A Marvelous Light,” by Freya Marske “The Rachel Incident,” by Caroline O’Donoghue Listen to and Follow ‘The Book Review’ Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-book-review/id120315179?mt=2) | Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/1q3tsOS9XhqgSslnyZyKV6) | Amazon Music (https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/d9314635-147c-409a-ae6a-fdf8358caee5/the-book-review) | YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdMrbgYfVl-vT4J7V1XT3MD5GCSebQJay) | iHeartRadio (https://www.iheart.com/podcast/326-the-book-review-28076603/) Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts and explore everything from politics to pop culture.
