Zo'n 250 scholen in de stad organiseren vandaag Paarse Vrijdag. Dat is ongeveer gelijk aan vorige jaren, terwijl uit onderzoek blijkt dat de acceptatie bij middelbare scholieren voor de queer-gemeenschap is gekelderd. Voor leerlingen en docenten van Havo de Hof uit Oost een belangrijke reden om vandaag in het paars naar school te komen.  Junnah en Marta zitten in de tweede klas van Havo de Hof in Oost. Ze verwachten de hele dag te blijven in het speciaal ingerichte Paarse Vrijdag lokaal. Je kan er buttons maken, tasjes beschilderen en op de foto met een grote regenboog-balonnenboog. "Het is gezellig hier. Je kan vandaag helemaal jezelf zijn, niemand lacht je uit", vertellen ze.  Niet overal is de sfeer zo goed als in dit lokaal. Uit recent onderzoek van de Universiteit Utrecht en het Trimbosinstituut blijkt dat onder Nederlandse jongeren tussen de twaalf en zestien jaar de acceptatie van homoseksualiteit de afgelopen vier jaar enorm is afgenomen. Waar 78 procent van de meisjes op de middelbare school in 2021 nog positief keek naar homoseksualiteit, was dat in 2025 nog maar 51 procent. Bij jongens kelderde dat van veertig procent naar tweeëntwintig procent.  Marta vertelt dat ze zich op school veilig voelt om zichzelf te zijn. Maar dat het op straat soms lastig is. "Soms schelden je dan uit voor homo. Dat is gewoon niet zo fijn", vertelt ze.  En hoe ga je daar dan als school mee om, is een belangrijk vraagstuk bij de Hof. De conclusie: praat erover. Ook met de jongeren die liever geen vlag in het lokaal zien hangen. "We blijven in gesprek, dat is zo belangrijk. Bewoners van Startblok Elzenhagen in Noord, waar studenten en jonge statushouders samenwonen, voelen zich niet veilig door een agressieve bewoner in het complex. Ze hebben hierover een klacht ingediend bij verhuurder Eigen Haard en het heft in eigen handen genomen door hem de toegang tot de gemeenschappelijke woonkamer te ontzeggen. Maar daar is Eigen Haard het niet mee eens. Startblok Elzenhagen is een wooncomplex voor 540 jongeren. De helft hiervan is student of werkende jongere, de andere helft is statushouder. Meestal gaat dit goed samen, maar afgelopen mei gaat het mis. Een statushouder, die de woonkamer wilde gebruiken voor een rouwceremonie, zet tegen de wil van de medebewoners het complete meubilair buiten in de regen. Als hij hierop wordt aangesproken, wordt hij agressief. "Dat werd een hele ruzie, waarop ik de politie heb gebeld", vertelt Nico van Es. Nico is een zogeheten gangmaker in het wooncomplex, door Eigen Haard aangesteld om zorg te dragen voor de woonsfeer, de gemeenschappelijke ruimtes en activiteiten. Tijdens het wachten op de politie escaleert de situatie. "De bewoner haalde er andere jongens bij en ging vervolgens de gang op en bedreigde een buurvrouw. De betreffende bewoonster voelt zich sindsdien niet meer veilig in het wooncomplex", vertelt ze. "Met een groep van vijf of zes man heeft hij me geïntimideerd. Hij stond voor de deur en zei dat hij die in wilde trappen. Het is af en toe heel eng om hier te wonen." Bewoners benadrukken dat het probleem niet is dat het hier om een statushouder gaat, maar dat het ontbreekt aan een goede en structurele begeleiding van mensen die soms met ingewikkelde mentale problematiek kampen. Ze voelen zich daarin niet gesteund en zeggen dat ze te veel op zichzelf zijn aangewezen om dit soort situaties op te lossen. Voor de veiligheid en omdat hij geen excuses wil maken, heeft gangmaker Nico van Es de agressieve bewoner de toegang tot de woonkamer ontzegd door de code te veranderen. Maar daar is Eigen Haard het niet mee eens. De corporatie laat weten dat de bewoner een waarschuwing heeft gekregen. Er volgt een sanctie als hij weer de fout ingaat. Omdat de bewoner huur betaalt, heeft hij recht op toegang tot de gemeenschappelijke woonkamer, laten ze AT5 weten. Geen toegang "Onbegrijpelijk", zegt de bedreigde bewoonster. "De politie is hier al twee keer geweest voor zijn agressieve gedrag. Dat hij toegang krijgt, maakt dat andere mensen zich minder veilig voelen." Ook Nico is niet van plan de agressieve bewoner alsnog toegang te geven. "Ik voel me niet gesteund door Eigen Haard. Scores of students from New York City’s Columbia University and Barnard College protested outside the gates of Columbia on Thursday in solidarity with Cornell University’s Jane Doe, the former student who was allegedly gang-raped in 2024 at the Chi Phi fraternity house by seven male students who avoided criminal prosecution. The protest was part of a national day of action during which high schoolers, college students and advocates held walkouts, rallies and vigils in at least 40 states across the country in response to Cornell’s handling of the Jane Doe case. “The feminist student movement is alive,” said Ella Duncan-High, the national organizing director of Feminist Generation and a student at George Mason University in Virginia. “We are here because every campus in this country has survivors, and every campus in this country deserves a movement fighting for them.”

They're afraid of going to the authorities because the investigation may be botched or they may be shamed," says Paul Ortiz, a professor of labor history and the lead sponsor of the resolution. "Everybody in the human rights movement reveres Navi Pillay," says war crimes prosecutor Reed Brody, who calls the award "a stinging rebuke to Donald Trump." Brody, a member of the United Nations Group of Human Rights Experts on Nicaragua, also comments on the Trump administration's decision to deport a Nicaraguan opposition activist, Jeffrey Jarquín, from the United States, where he was in the process of seeking asylum. As masked agents reportedly posing as construction workers attempted to arrest 28-year-old Oscar Belgal, they opened fire on his car. Belgal was shot in the neck. His 5-year-old child, who was in the back seat, was physically unharmed. Belgal was taken to a local hospital, where hundreds, including our guests, Democratic congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier and New York City Councilmember Carmen De La Rosa, gathered to demand his release. "What we saw yesterday was a prime example of why [ICE] is a terror to our communities, why it should not exist," says Avila Chevalier. She was among multiple people assaulted by officers with the NYPD unit that specializes in protest policing, known as the Strategic Response Group (SRG). Four others were arrested at Thursday evening's protest. Avila Chevalier, who was knocked down to the ground by officers, says, "This is why we also must demand that we get rid of and disband the SRG, because this type of response should have never happened for folks who were just simply trying to protect their neighbor." "I personally witnessed the NYPD escalating aggressively towards our community, barricading the community in … I also witnessed NYPD helping the ICE vehicles whisk away our neighbors and come in and out of the hospital," adds De La Rosa. Een hardloopgroep voor atleten met de ziekte van Parkinson traint elke donderdagmiddag onder leiding van Kees van den Berg op het complex van AV23 op sportpark Middenmeer. De groep is opgericht door Van den Berg nadat hij de diagnose Parkinson had gekregen. Al jaren traint hij de groep met medepatiënten en daarvoor ontving hij deze week de Respect Award uit handen van wethouder Sport, Sofyan Mbarki. Voor de leden van zijn groep is het geen verrassing. Volgens hen verdient hun trainer alle lof die hij krijgt. De club meldde Kees van den Berg aan voor de Respect Awards en hij kwam als winnaar uit de bus. Het is een prijs voor vrijwilligers die impact maken bij hun club. "Het is echt heel erg mooi te zien voor ons als vereniging", aldus voorzitter Roy Marinus. "Kees is al jaren lid en trainer bij ons op de vereniging. Hij heeft de ziekte van Parkinson en is vervolgens een eigen trainingsgroep begonnen. Ja, dat is geweldig." Steun Alle atleten in zijn groep lijden ook aan de ziekte. Sietse, die al sinds 2022 bij de groep zit blikt terug. Hij kreeg in het OLVG, naast de diagnose Parkinson, ook een flyer mee van de trainingen van Van den Berg. "Je vindt ook steun, door met elkaar te vergelijken en te zeggen hoe pak jij dat aan", vertelt Sietse. "Ik denk dat het heel goed is dat we er ook wél over praten." Trots Maar het gaat niet elke training over de ziekte, ze praten ook veel over voetbal of over andere sporten. De deelnemers komen elke week graag weer terug en dat zijn werk nu bekroond is met een award, ontroert Van den Berg. "Het sijpelt nu wel door", geeft hij aan. "Ik heb uiteindelijk een woord gevonden hoe ik me voel erover. Het is niet geweldig of wat dan ook, maar wel trots. Trots zonder vals bescheiden te zijn." Het eren van Van den Berg komt op een cruciaal moment. De ziekte van Parkinson is de gemene deler van de groep, maar uiteraard ook een uitdaging. "Het is heel erg mooi als je dit ziet, maar er zit ook een andere kant aan", aldus voorzitter Marinus. "Kees heeft aangegeven dat hij binnenkort gaat stoppen dus we zijn druk op zoek naar een nieuwe Kees, een opvolger voor hem." Afscheid Van den Berg wil nog geen afscheid nemen van de groep. "Voor mij telt ook het met elkaar praten. Dan ben ik één van hen en dat vind ik heel aangenaam." Maar tegelijkertijd is het training geven een steeds grotere uitdaging. "Ik heb het overzicht niet meer. Veel oefeningen gaan de mist in omdat ik verkeerd tel." Van 130.000 Amsterdammers van 65 jaar en ouder in 2025, naar 186.000 in 2050. De stad blijft de komende decennia groeien. Volgens de nieuwste bevolkingsprognoses kan Amsterdam in 2050 ongeveer 1,08 miljoen inwoners tellen. Toch betekent die groei niet dat iedereen een plek houdt in de stad. Vooral gezinnen en mensen die werken in de zorg, het onderwijs en de techniek dreigen Amsterdam steeds moeilijker te kunnen betalen. Dit blijkt uit de bevolkingsprognoses van Onderzoek en Statistiek. De onderzoekers keken naar de gevolgen van de veranderende bevolkingssamenstelling voor de stad. De groei van de stad komt de komende jaren voor een belangrijk deel door migratie. Vooral internationale kenniswerkers komen naar de stad. Dat is goed voor de economie, maar zorgt ook voor extra druk op de woningmarkt. Voor gezinnen wordt het daardoor steeds lastiger om een geschikte woning te vinden. De afgelopen jaren zijn wel veel woningen gebouwd, maar dat zijn volgens O&S vaak kleine en relatief dure woningen. "De woningvoorraad sluit daardoor minder goed aan bij gezinnen en mensen die langere tijd in Amsterdam willen blijven", stelt O&S. Het gevolg is nu al zichtbaar. Het aantal gezinnen in Amsterdam neemt af en ook het aantal geboortes daalt. Daardoor zijn er minder kinderen en lopen de leerlingenaantallen op scholen terug. Tegelijkertijd heeft Amsterdam juist mensen nodig die in de stad werken. Vooral in de zorg, het onderwijs en de techniek zijn grote personeelstekorten. Die problemen kunnen de komende jaren groter worden. Amsterdam vergrijst namelijk snel.
