Over the past few weeks, the most senior intelligence officials in the federal government have released a series of new documents which they claim shows that, starting in 2016, President Barack Obama and his deputies carried out a criminal conspiracy against President Trump. Michael S. Schmidt, an investigative reporter for The Times, explains what’s behind the sudden re-emergence on the Trump-Russia saga, and what happens when heads of the C.I.A., F.B.I. and Justice Department all turn their attention to the president’s domestic enemies. Guest: Michael S. Schmidt (https://www.nytimes.com/by/michael-s-schmidt) , an investigative reporter for The New York Times, covering Washington. Background reading: • In targeting Mr. Obama, Mr. Trump’s retribution campaign has taken another turn (https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/23/us/politics/trump-obama-retribution.html) . • A spokesman for Mr. Obama (https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/22/us/politics/obama-trump-russia-response.html) said that Mr. Trump’s accusations were ”ridiculous” and “weak.” For more information on today’s episode, visit nytimes.com/thedaily (http://nytimes.com/thedaily?smid=pc-thedaily) . Creamy Wagyu ramen Ingredients 1 piece of steak (normally I use the end piece that I cut when slicing steaks) 1 packet ramen (your choice) 1 spring onion, sliced 1 egg yolk 1 tbsp mayo Method Season the steak with salt and pan-fry to your preferred doneness (keep it rare if it’s going over hot broth). Set the steak aside to rest. Thinly slice the spring onion and set aside. In a serving bowl, add the egg yolk, mayonnaise, and the spicy seasoning packet from the ramen. Bring a small pot of water to a simmer. Add the noodles and the other seasoning packet, and cook according to the instructions on the packet. While the noodles cook, mix the egg yolk, mayo, and seasoning in the bowl with 2 tablespoons of the hot noodle water. Stir until it forms a smooth, creamy sauce. Drain the noodles and add them straight into the bowl. Toss well to coat in the sauce. Slice the rested steak thinly and place on top of the noodles. Garnish with spring onion greens and a spoon of chilli crisp if using.
Sam Graham-Felsen never imagined being lonely. Throughout his childhood and as a young man his life revolved around his friends. But when Sam got married and then had kids, going out with his friends almost felt like a luxury. After years of focusing on everything in his life except friendship, Sam began to realize he was missing something essential, and he decided to get his friends back. On this episode of “Modern Love,” Mr. Graham-Felsen describes how he went from being a boy with a wealth of deep friendships to finding himself feeling lonely as an adult, and what he did to bring friendship back into his life. If you’ve ever suspected your smart devices are spying on you, you’re right. In this episode, Jon Chase, Wirecutter's supervising editor for smart home coverage, reveals how even everyday devices you may not consider "smart" are monitoring you. They’re collecting data to build a profile that can then be sold to the highest bidder. The conversation covers: • The devices collecting your data: Any device connected to the internet can collect data. This isn’t necessarily malicious; a smart thermostat, for instance, collects data to heat your home more efficiently. • How your devices build a profile: Devices use your IP address, online activity, location, and even associations with other people to compile a detailed profile. This profile is often sold to the highest bidder for various reasons. • How your smart TV builds on this profile: Modern TVs use automatic content recognition (ACR) to screenshot your screen every few seconds, adding to your data profile. Data brokers mine this info. • How to protect your data: Jon shares practical, actionable steps to keep your data safe. He provides specific tips for adjusting privacy settings making more informed choices about the devices you bring home. Products we recommend: • Best streaming device if you you want to avoid ACR: Apple TV 4K (https://wrctr.co/3USgc8g) • Jon’s favorite power washer: Ryobi RY142500 Brushless 2500 PSI Pressure Washer (https://wrctr.co/4frghcF) Additional reading: • Yes, Your TV Is Probably Spying on You. He is calling for more pressure to be put on Russia. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte believes that talks about territorial concessions are inevitable. Germany is organising a video conference of European leaders for Wednesday, 13th of August. Trump and Zelenskyy should be participating in this meeting. It is still unclear whether Trump will actually attend. But he emphasised that he wants to hear all thoughts and ideas before the meeting with Putin.
