From the winter through the summer of 1961, director Leo Hurwitz led coverage of the pool TV coverage of the trial, and then oversaw the editing of highlights into "Verdict for Tomorrow" which was released by the Anti-Defamation League in 1961. Featuring host Patrick McVey and narrator Lowell Thomas (who also appears on camera), the film won the Peabody Award. Written by Gerald Pearsen and co-produced by ABC Capital Cities, the film uses the actual footage gathered during the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem, and utilizes the trial as a reminder of Nazism and the persecution of Jews rather than a "dated" legal presentation. The events leading up to the trial are notable. Although briefly detained by the Allies in 1945, Adolf Eichmann managed to escape to Argentina where he was discovered over a decade later by the Mossad. He was taken captive and spirited to Israel in 1960. Eichmann's role in the Holocaust was critical: he had participated in the January 1942 Wannsee Conference, where the so-called Final Solution to the Jewish Question was planned. The court questions the paradox of a Nazi official not being anti-Semitic. 19:40-22:02: Eichmann's defense argues that he was following orders and that the responsibility lies with those who gave the orders, not those who carried them out. 22:02-28:08: The trial concludes with the defense pleading for Eichmann's acquittal, while the prosecution emphasizes the importance of the trial in educating the world about the dangers of tyranny and dictatorship. Adolf Eichmann was a leading member of the Nazi Party in charge of organising mass deportations of Jews to ghettos, concentration camps, and extermination camps. In 1960, his hiding place was discovered by Mossad, and he was kidnapped and brought to Israel to stand trial. On 11 April 1961, the trial began as. Eichmann was charged with crimes against the Jewish people, the first time a high-ranking Nazi had been charged with this crime, crimes against humanity and membership of criminal organisations.Throughout the trial, Eichmann proclaimed his innocence and said he was simply obeying orders from Hitler. In 2023 a remarkable coin hoard was discovered in Yorkshire, England, that shows Harold in a different light. This is the first recorded hoard of coins which can definitely be dated to the year 1066. Containing only coins struck during Harold’s brief reign of 282 days, the hoard reveals a king whose authority was recognised across England, and whose government could produce new coins with great speed. In Cambodja zijn grote scamcentra ontdekt waar mensen onder dwang online fraude plegen. Jonge mensen uit tientallen landen worden onder valse voorwendselen naar Zuidoost-Azië gelokt. Daar worden ze gedwongen om via datingsites, nepinvesteringen en cryptoscams geld af te troggelen van slachtoffers over de hele wereld. Volgens de Verenigde Naties werken naar schatting 300.000 mensen onder dwang in deze scamindustrie. Zembla reist naar Cambodja en vindt aanwijzingen dat de criminelen achter deze scamcentra zich specifiek op Nederland richten. In een van de zogenaamde scamfabrieken, Park 8, krijgt Zembla inzage in door de politie in beslag genomen gegevensdragers. Daarop staan chatgesprekken met nietsvermoedende Nederlanders en lijsten met Nederlandse telefoonnummers. Dwangarbeiders die uit de scamcentra zijn vrijgelaten, vertellen dat zij Nederlanders moesten oplichten met een script dat speciaal op Nederland was gericht. De scammers vertellen dat ze onder valse voorwendselen naar Zuidoost-Azië zijn gelokt. Ze dachten te hebben gesolliciteerd op een echte baan, maar bij aankomst werden hun documenten ingenomen en werden ze gedwongen om mensen online op te lichten. Wie weigerde, werd volgens hen mishandeld. Zembla heeft video’s in handen waarop te zien is hoe een man langdurig stroomstoten krijgt en hoe drie andere mannen op de werkvloer worden geschopt en geslagen. Volgens de voormalige dwangarbeiders werd in Park 8 onder meer gewerkt met Nederlandse simkaarten en scripts waarin scammers zich voordeden als mensen die in Nederland wonen of studeren. Zembla vond daarnaast op Telegram vacatures waarin scamcentra, in ieder geval tussen juli 2025 en februari 2026, Nederlandse medewerkers werven. Ook zou een ‘Nederlands model’ worden ingezet wanneer potentiële slachtoffers via een videogesprek wilden controleren met wie ze contact hadden. De Verenigde Naties spreken van moderne slavernij en noemen mensenhandel voor de scamindustrie een van de snelstgroeiende vormen van georganiseerde criminaliteit ter wereld. Inmiddels zijn slachtoffers van meer dan 80 nationaliteiten geïdentificeerd. De Cambodjaanse overheid zegt de afgelopen maanden meer dan 600 scamlocaties te hebben opgerold. Deskundigen waarschuwen dat de criminele netwerken zich verplaatsen naar andere landen, waaronder Myanmar, Madagaskar en Sri Lanka. De slachtoffers uit de video zijn niet de enige slachtoffers van dit soort scams in Nederland. In de afgelopen 2,5 jaar kreeg de Fraudehelpdesk bijna 3000 meldingen van slachtoffers. The new film, The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist, features interviews with leading AI executives, researchers, as well as critics, who all voice similar concerns. Since the film's release earlier this year, a number of AI-driven hacks and other incidents have further alarmed people studying this topic. "I'm really scared, and I'm struggling in my own life to sort of compartmentalize what I learned, what I know, what I understand, what I see happening around me," says filmmaker Daniel Roher. He began work on The AI Doc as he was about to become a father and wondered what kind of world his children would inherit. We also speak with Tristan Harris, co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology, a leading AI safety advocate who is featured in the film. He says part of the risk of AI development is that it has the logic of an "arms race," with companies and countries racing to gain supremacy rather than building guardrails. María del Carmen Abascal, better known as Maricarmen, died on Wednesday just hours before she was set to sign a new rental agreement. She was forcibly removed from her Madrid apartment last month on a stretcher after the private investment company that owns the building hiked her rent. After massive public outcry, the landlord had agreed to allow her back into her apartment. Independent Spanish journalist María Carrión says that although Maricarmen's story galvanized much of the country, evictions like hers are "a daily occurrence" in Spain. "Rents have gone up 80% in the last 10 years, while salaries have not kept up," Carrión says. "Young people cannot leave their homes. They cannot become independent or start families. Bijna een jaar geleden kondigde de gemeente Ouder-Amstel een actieplan aan om de fietsroutes tussen Amsterdam en Duivendrecht veiliger te maken. De aanleiding was de moord op de 17-jarige Lisa uit Abcoude op de Holterbergweg in Duivendrecht. Er zijn sinds die tijd ook echt wel maatregelen genomen, maar gebruikers van de routes vinden dat de gemeente veel meer moet doen. Betere verlichting, meer snoeien, meer handhaving en cameratoezicht. Het zijn een paar van de speerpunten uit het actieplan 'Aandacht voor veiligheid' van de gemeente Ouder-Amstel. "De gemeente heeft allerlei zaken wel opgepakt, alleen nu zijn we een jaar verder," zegt Niek Heering, voorzitter van de stichting Vrienden van Duivendrecht. Zij en andere bewoners staan langs De Slinger, een belangrijke fietsverbinding in Duivendrecht. Heering wijst op de slechte verlichting van een tunnel iets verderop. "Het is gewoon een heel onveilig tunneltje." Naast haar staat Ger Lakerveld. Zij zegt dat ze de gemeente een half jaar lang heeft moeten vragen om de struiken hier te snoeien. Nee, heel veilig voelen deze bewoners zich niet in dit stukje Duivendrecht. Toch is er het afgelopen jaar veel gebeurd, zegt de burgemeester van Ouder-Amstel, Susanne de Roy van Zuidewijn-Rive. "We zijn echt heel hard bezig. Het actieplan heeft ertoe geleid dat we veel meer gesprekken hebben gevoerd met inwoners en gebruikers. We hebben duidelijker gekregen waar de knelpunten zitten. Er is wel echt al heel veel gebeurd, maar ik kan nog niet zeggen 'het is klaar'. Wat heel belangrijk is geweest, is dat we door dit actieplan veel breder zijn gaan kijken naar de problematiek. Het vrouwelijk perspectief is echt op de agenda gekomen, niet alleen in onze gemeente, maar in heel Nederland. En we hebben ook gesprekken met onze buurgemeenten. Want deze fietsroutes gaan over de gemeentegrenzen heen." Concreet is langs de fietsroutes tussen Amsterdam en Duivendrecht gesnoeid, alleen groeit het op sommige plekken net zo hard weer terug. Ook is de verlichting langs een deel van de routes verbeterd, maar niet overal. Zo zijn er op fietspad De Slinger nog steeds tunnels zonder verlichting. De Roy van Zuidewijn-Rive: "Die moeten we ook aanpakken. Helaas is het allemaal niet in één dag gebeurd." Er wordt uitgezocht welke van de verschillende fietsroutes tussen Amsterdam en Duivendrecht beschouwd kan worden als de meest veilige. Een adviesbureau komt eind deze maand met zijn bevindingen, vertelt de burgemeester. "Met al onze buurgemeenten voeren we daar gesprekken over. Als je vanuit de binnenstad van Amsterdam naar bijvoorbeeld Abcoude gaat, dan kun je een fietspad nemen langs de A2, langs de metro, of je kan de Holterbergweg nemen. Als bijvoorbeeld die Holterbergweg de beste route blijkt zijn, moeten we kijken wat er nodig is om die route nog verder te verbeteren. Dan kan dat de geadviseerde fietsroute zijn vanuit Amsterdam richting Abcoude. Dat moet dan gecommuniceerd worden. In this complete guide to Cava DO, I explore the history, grape varieties, production zones and modern quality classifications behind Spain’s traditional-method sparkling wine. Cava is far more geographically and stylistically diverse than many people realise We start with the origins of Cava in Penedès and the role of Josep Raventós and Manuel Raventós Domènech before looking at how the category developed into the modern Denominación de Origen Cava. I then break down the principal Cava grape varieties, including Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Parellada, alongside Chardonnay, Malvasía or Subirat Parent, Garnacha Tinta, Trepat, Pinot Noir and Monastrell. We look at how these varieties differ in ripening, altitude, flavour profile and their role within both white and rosado Cava. Geography is a major part of the story. We explore the Comtats de Barcelona and its subzones, including Serra de Mar, Valls d’Anoia-Foix, Conca del Gaià, Serra de Prades and Pla de Ponent. I also look at Cava production beyond Catalonia, including Alto Ebro in La Rioja, Valle del Cierzo in Aragón, Viñedos de Almendralejo in Extremadura and Requena in Valencia. There is also a closer look at Alella and the distinctive sauló soils of Serra de Mar, with decomposed granite, excellent drainage and the local importance of Xarel·lo, known here as Pansa Blanca. Finally, I explain the modern Cava quality hierarchy, including Cava de Guarda, Cava de Guarda Superior, Reserva, Gran Reserva and Cava de Paraje Calificado, as well as the Elaborador Integral designation.
