In a dramatic act of protest on Sunday, Democratic members of the Texas House of Representatives began to flee the state. It is a last-ditch attempt to stop President Trump and Texas Republicans from adopting an aggressively redrawn congressional map that would eliminate Democratic seats — and could help lock in a Republican majority in next year’s elections. Shane Goldmacher, a Times political correspondent, explains this new chapter in the era of unvarnished partisan warfare. Guest: Shane Goldmacher (https://www.nytimes.com/by/shane-goldmacher#latest) , a political correspondent for The New York Times. Background reading: • The redrawn map (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/07/30/us/politics/texas-gerrymandering-map-redistricting.html) , unveiled by Texas Republicans and pushed by Mr. Trump, puts areas of Houston, Dallas and San Antonio that have incumbent Democrats into districts that would now favor Republicans. • “We’re leaving Texas to fight for Texans (https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/03/us/texas-democrats-walkout-redistricting-map-gop.html) ,” Gene Wu, a state representative from Houston and the chair of the Democratic caucus in the Texas House, said in a statement Sunday. Are the deals being structured to exclude China from global supply chains and are these tariffs just about trade, or something more? We explore how constant changes are disrupting business activity, whether manufacturing is really coming back to the U.S., and what history tells us about protectionism’s impact on innovation and productivity. Churros con Chocolate Serves: 4 Prep time: 15 mins Cook time: 20 mins Ingredients 250ml (1 cup) water 60g unsalted butter ½ tsp vanilla paste 110g (½ cup) caster sugar Pinch of salt 150g (1 cup) plain flour 2 eggs Vegetable oil for deep frying Chocolate sauce 180g dark chocolate, chopped 500ml (2 cups) milk 1 tbsp cornflour (cornstarch) 40g (2 tbsp) caster sugar Method Step 1: Prep the dough Combine the water, butter and vanilla in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring just to a boil, then stir in the flour, salt and 3 tsp (15g) of the sugar. Mix quickly until mixture comes together, then reduce heat to low and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for 5 minutes. Beat in the eggs, 1 at a time, until smooth, then transfer mixture to a piping bag fitted with a star nozzle. Step 2: Make the chocolate sauce For the chocolate sauce, whisk the cornflour with 40mls of the milk to make a slurry. Combine the remaining milk with chocolate and sugar in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat and stir until chocolate melts (do not cook above a simmer). Whisk in the slurry and cook until the sauce thickens. Step 3: Cook Heat oil in a deep frying pan to 160°C (320°F). Pipe the dough into long sticks into the oil and cook for 2-3 minutes, turning, until golden on both sides. Transfer to a wire rack to drain, then toss in the remaining sugar until lightly coated. Step 4: Finish and serve Serve warm churros with hot chocolate sauce for dipping. #recipe #breakfast

A stone's throw from the iconic Cheops pyramids, another famous man-made creation rises, towering over the Giza Plateau: The Grand Egyptian Museum. The construction of this ultra-modern building, of unprecedented proportions spanning 117 acres, was recently completed. With its 20 years of construction marked by pitfalls and dead ends, 5,000 daily onsite workers, and a $1 billion budget, it is the largest construction site the world has ever seen. In the 260,000 square feet dedicated to the permanent collection, the new museum houses 100,000 priceless archaeological artefacts, including numerous ones that have never been shown to the public. Through a combination of illustrated archives and 3D sequences of the building's construction, as well as explanations by the experts involved, we will delve into the heart of this pharaonic project - the greatest Egyptian works ever undertaken since the pyramids. It's organized, structured, and strategic from the beginning, so you make the most of your time and avoid injury and frustration. Build your basics, fill the gaps, and rise to more advanced levels of playing. Free sheet music library: https://classicalguitarshed.com/music Free tutorials: https://classicalguitarshed.com/cgs-archives Structured classical guitar course: https://classicalguitarshed.com/membership Are you learning classical guitar or would like to learn classical guitar? ClassicalGuitarShed.com can help you on the journey. If you want to rise to new levels in your playing, it just takes time and strategic work. To play classical guitar well, you need to know: * how to hold and touch the guitar - form and positioning * how to move your fingers and hands - efficient, clean, and fluid * how to learn pieces - reading music, understanding what you see, ingraining, polishing * how to craft the music so it is beautiful - swells and fades, rhythm, touch * how to practice so all these skills improve over time and don't go away At the root of beautiful playing is a solid technique (aka “the way your hands move”). You may have beautiful music in your head, but if your hands can't play it, it won't come out of the guitar. But bad technique puts a limit on your playing. Speed, tone quality, and control can suffer. Good technique gets stronger and more instinctive with every practice. It forms the bedrock foundation for your music. And you may want to understand music so you learn it more easily and it makes more sense. This can help you avoid the excess frustration and dismay that comes with shoddy practice and prolonged confusion. But playing the notes is not enough. Like an actor bring words to life, we breathe life into our pieces. And we can do this in an organized way, day in and day out, reliably. Great musicians can play wonderfully in any mood. They do not rely on emotions. Instead, they create music that affects our emotions. This is a trained skill, not an inborn talent. Playing classical guitar is a long-term study. It's something we do in our homes as part of our days. We play for ourselves, for the quality it adds to life. We may enjoy playing guitar for others, but most of the time we are alone with our work. There are methods and formulas for great practice. We can use our time well so that see more progress. We can fix the problems and erase the mistakes. And we can enjoy conquering the plentiful challenges that classical guitar music offers. If you plan to play classical guitar for any length of time, it is worth it to get help. It's not something we can do on our own, like folk music. I have a structured and organized course to help you play classical guitar. Irving Goffman: The Hidden Grammar of Everyday Life Join us for a 42-minute journey through the groundbreaking work of sociologist Irving Goffman, whose microscopic lens on everyday interaction revolutionized how we understand the social world. In this video, we explore: • Who Irving Goffman was and why his “essayist” style broke academic molds • His comparative method, drawing on novels, biographies, and ethnography • The concept of the interaction order and how social situations themselves shape our behavior • Goffman’s seminal idea of “presentation of self”, contrasting sincere and cynical performers • The twin rituals of deference (avoidance vs. presentational) and demeanor (bearing, dress, poise) • His analysis of felicity conditions, self-talk, and the repertoire of response cries • The dynamics of total institutions, identity stripping, and the resilient underlife • How gender is performed through institutional reflexivity and spatial design • The implications of Goffman’s insights for our digitally mediated social landscapes Whether you’re a sociology student, a communication professional, or simply curious about the hidden rules that govern our daily interactions, this deep dive will equip you with the conceptual tools to see the social dances around you in a whole new light. This documentary tells the story of a typical day in 1944 in the “death factory” at Auschwitz from the viewpoint of victims – but it also allows insights into the mindset of the perpetrators. It is based on a unique document: “The Auschwitz Album” - a collection of harrowing photographs made by SS-photographer Bernhard Walter who was officially assigned to chronicle the “efficient work” of the SS. Gochujang Chocolate Chip Cookies 🍪 Ingredients 225g unsalted butter 165g (¾ cup) caster sugar 220g (1 cup) brown sugar 2 eggs 10ml (2 tsp) vanilla extract 400g (2 ⅔ cups) plain flour 1 tsp baking powder ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda pinch sea salt 3 tbsp gochujang 100g 70% dark chocolate, chopped 200g dark chocolate chips sea salt flakes Method Step 1: Brown the butter Melt butter in a medium saucepan on medium heat and cook until browned and starting to smell nutty, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a bowl and place in a bowl of iced water. Allow to cool, stirring occasionally. When cooled, whip the butter over the ice until light, then discard ice. Step 2: Prep the dough Beat the sugars into butter until creamed. Beat in eggs 1 at a time, beating well between each addition until light and fluffy, then beat in vanilla extract. Set aside 1 tbsp of the flour then sift remaining flour, baking powder, bicarb and a pinch of salt together, then mix into butter mixture until a soft dough forms. Transfer ⅓ of the dough to a separate bowl and mix in gochujang and the reserved flour, until well blended. Fold in chocolate chips and chopped dark chocolate. Cover dough tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. Step 3: Shape and bake Preheat the oven to 190°C fan forced (375°F) and line 2 large baking trays with baking paper. Divide the dough into 24 equal portions, roughly heaped tablespoon sized. Place cookies on trays, with at least 3cm gap between each for spreading. Bake for 10-12 minutes, without opening the oven door. Sprinkle with a little sea salt as soon as they are out of the oven, then allow to cool for at least 15 minutes on the trays. Recipe notes Recipe origins and authenticity: Chilli and chocolate have long been a delicious flavour match Cook support: Try not to overmix the dough when marbling the gochujang portion through the other, otherwise you can lose some of that bang in the tasting. Sourcing: Gochujang is available at major supermarkets and Asian supermarkets. Storage: Store cookies in an airtight container in the pantry.

I'm sure my fellow nerds will appreciate the in-depth insight. This was a full-day visit and I gained a lot of valuable information about a lot of things, from testing and tuning to data collection, validation, repeatability, and much more. I learned that data is definitely king and that to get consistent results and ensure that a modern engine not just meets all the emission standards, but also all the design goals, you have to be 100% certain in your data. You have to have broad and in-depth data collection but you also have to ensure that your data collection is repeatable and accurat,e which means that you must be capable of perfect environment and variable control. All of this and more can be seen during the testing facilities tour. I also had a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a few laps around the amazing oval test track and convince (surprisingly easily) two fellow petrolheads to mess with car programming in a fun way (for science!) and some very interesting insight into creeping and throttle pedal related programing on the latest generation of vehicles that are part of the Horse R&D center activities. The video ends with a short interview with Javier Reyes, the lead for powertrain customer performance, where we discuss engines and hybrid powertrains and the future of automotive transportation. I would like to extend my most heartfelt gratitude to Horse for giving me this amazing opportunity and a very special thank you to everyone in the team for their amazing hospitality and all their effort to make me feel welcome and ensure that I get to see as much as possible. The Normans' expansion from Northern Europe into the Mediterranean and the Middle East showcased their dual nature of savagery and state-building. Their cunning rise as mercenaries in Southern Italy led to the establishment of the powerful and culturally tolerant Kingdom of Sicily under Roger II, a realm where Greek, Muslim, and Christian influences intertwined. Concurrently, the First Crusade saw the Normans play a prominent role, including the brutal conquest of Jerusalem and the subsequent deepening of the divide between Christianity and Islam. Despite their eventual assimilation into the lands they conquered, the Normans left an indelible mark, demonstrating both a blueprint for aggressive colonialism and a remarkable capacity for multicultural coexistence. The Twin Tangye Engine Returns To My Workshop. My friend James Evans recently bought this engine from a dealer as my customer sadly died and his collection went to auction. It ran well when he bought it but very shortly afterwards developed a serious problem by becoming very stiff. This problem was rectified by fitting new Silicone Piston Rings and I explain to James what has happened and why. Then I fix it. https://www.patreon.com/keithappleton IF YOU ENJOY WATCHING THESE DETAILED TUTORIAL VIDEOS THAT I PRODUCE TO HELP BEGINNERS TO THE HOBBY, THEN PLEASE BECOME A PATRON OF MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL VIA "PATREON" AND ALLOW ME THE TIME TO MAKE EVEN MORE OF THESE SPECIALIST AND HIGHLY DETAILED TUTORIAL VIDEOS.
