From the birth of democracy to early globalization, this documentary explores how the Greeks, Romans, and Vikings transformed history. Journey through time to discover how the ancient Greeks laid the foundations of modern science, theatre, and politics—with mischievous gods and the first Olympic Games. Then travel to the height of the Roman Empire, where military power, political strategy, and engineering brilliance built one of history’s most influential civilizations. Finally, set sail with the Vikings, fearless navigators and traders who reached America centuries before Columbus. This captivating film unpacks the innovations, myths, and legacies of three of history’s most groundbreaking cultures—and shows how their world still shapes ours today. Claudia de Rham, Raphael Bousso, and Bjørn Ekeberg discuss the biggest mistake Einstein made, and why it's still relevant now. Who do you agree with the most? With a free trial, you can watch the full debate NOW at https://iai.tv/video/the-worst-prediction-in-the-history-of-science?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description New scientific accounts of the universe are expected to fit with observation and predicted results from established theories. But at the heart of modern physics, there's reason to think this is not the case. The century-old crisis begins with Einstein’s self-proclaimed 'biggest blunder': on account of the discovery of an expanding, not static, universe, he threw out ‘the cosmological constant’ from his original equations of general relativity. But when the constant resurfaced in the ‘70s, associated with the energy of the vacuum, there was a problem: The Standard Model of particle physics predicted a value that was 120 orders of magnitude out. That’s worse than predicting an atom is the size of the universe. Unsurprisingly, it has been described as the 'worst prediction in the history of physics'. Worse still, the expansion of the universe is accelerating, and the mysterious ‘dark energy’, invented to account for this, only muddied the waters. Despite the prediction error, the majority of physicists use the vacuum energy as an explanation for dark energy and accept the Standard Model as a credible theory. Is there something necessarily wrong with dark energy and our current cosmological story? Or can we fix the problem and find the right answer, or is science a limited model and not a direct description of reality at all? It is worth clarifying three concepts relevant to the debate, often all used interchangeably. The first, the cosmological constant, is a term Einstein added to his equations of general relativity (the theory of how matter warps spacetime) to allow for a static universe, neither expanding or contracting (though it turns out we live in an expanding universe). The vacuum energy is the energy of empty space. According to quantum field theory, which combines quantum mechanics and special relativity to describe the behaviour of elementary particles, even empty space has some energy. The vacuum energy is a physical quantity predicted by the theory. Dark energy is the unknown cause of the observed acceleration of the expansion of the universe. Whether each are distinct or the same is undecided. #physics #einstein #relativity #gravity #darkenergy Claudia de Rham is a theoretical physicist based at Imperial College London, who works on cutting-edge research at the interface of gravity, cosmology, and particle physics. In 2020, she won the Blavatnik Award for Young Scientists for revitalizing the theory of massive gravity. Raphael Bousso is Professor and The Chancellor's Chair in Physics at UC Berkeley, where he researches theoretical cosmology and quantum gravity. He was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society "for fundamental discoveries in the field of quantum cosmology." Bjørn Ekeberg is a philosopher of science whose work focuses on the limits of scientific knowledge, challenging the standard model of cosmology by probing some of the biggest inconsistencies and mysteries in science today. Jacob Barandes hosts. The Institute of Art and Ideas features videos and articles from cutting edge thinkers discussing the ideas that are shaping the world, from metaphysics to string theory, technology to democracy, aesthetics to genetics. From the psychedelic swirl of the 60s to the slow, bass-heavy haze of modern hip hop, cannabis has quietly shaped the sonic landscape for over half a century. But how exactly does a plant influence production choices, vocal styles, even the tempo of entire genres? Patented in 1955 and manufactured by Jeppesen-Sanderson, a company with a long and storied history in aviation navigation, the CR-3 dispenses with the slider used by Dalton-style computers, instead using a more compact disc mechanism to perform wind triangle calculations. Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan has now been in jail for almost two years. He’s currently serving a 14-year sentence on corruption charges he has always denied - and his wife Bushra is serving seven years. Khan and his party remain hugely popular in Pakistan and the case has roiled a country which Khan claims is living under an undeclared martial law. Khan’s sons Kasim and Sulaiman join Piers Morgan in his London studio to share the appalling conditions their father is being forced to live in - and they say they are willing to risk being arrested to go to Pakistan in an effort to see him freed. Summer is the season for road trips, and also for road trip stories. Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” may be the most famous example in American literature — but there are lots of other great road trip books, so this week the Book Review’s staff critics Dwight Garner, Alexandra Jacobs and Jennifer Szalai presented readers with a list of 18 of their favorites. On this episode of the podcast they chat with host Gilbert Cruz about the project, their picks and the top-down, wind blown, carefree appeal of the road trip narrative as a genre. Books discussed in this episode: “On the Road,” by Jack Kerouac “Sing, Unburied, Sing,” by Jesmyn Ward “Lost Children Archive,” by Valeria Luiselli “I Am Homeless if This Is Not My Home,” by Lorrie Moore “Tramps Like Us," by Joe Westmoreland “Driving Mr. Albert,” by Michael Paterniti “Gypsy: A Memoir," by Gypsy Rose Lee “The Dog of the South,” by Charles Portis “All Fours,” by Miranda July “Hearts,” by Hilma Wolitzer “The Pigeon Tunnel: Stories From My Life,” by John le Carré “Machine Dreams,” by Jayne Anne Phillips “Lonesome Dove,” by Larry McMurtry “Lolita,” by Vladimir Nabokov “The Grapes of Wrath,” by John Steinbeck “The Price of Salt,” by Patricia Highsmith Subscribe today at nytimes.com/podcasts (http://nytimes.com/podcasts) or on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Yellowstone, the oldest National Park on earth: famous for its diverse wildlife and a huge magma chamber that characterises its distinctive landscapes. The National Park in the west of the United States reminds us of the importance of protected areas - and at the same time impressively demonstrates that wilderness doesn't know no limits. Bison and wolves, almost wiped out and lost, have luckily returned to this area. But wild animals want to migrate, further north than ever before, as the earth's climate changes. Yellowstone has ideas on how to handle this. For a year, a team traveled to the Rocky Mountains and accompanied rangers, explorers and adventurers in their incredible daily lives, which are usually hidden from visitors. It is an excursion to one of the most beautiful and wildest areas on earth between deep -snow and Indian summer. Uitbuiting, vervuiling en soms zelfs kinderarbeid: we weten dat fast fashion onder ermbarmelijke omstandigheden wordt geproduceerd. Toch blijven we kopen. In 2021 onderzocht Zembla hoe de fast fashion-industrie ons blijft verleiden. Met influencers, gepersonaliseerde advertenties en scherpe kortingen spelen kledingmerken in op de beloningsmechanismen in ons brein. Deskundigen - waaronder duurzaamheidsexpert Marieke Eyskoot - leggen uit hoe neuro- en gedragswetenschap bewust wordt ingezet om ons te laten kopen. *Dit fragment komt van een Zembla-uitzending uit 2021.
European authorities continue cracking down on citizens for doing what governments refuse to: standing up against Israel’s genocide of Palestinians. At a demonstration in Bourse, Brussels, on July 30 2025, Belgian police arrested a protestor, then turned their violence on those who continued filming. They used pepper spray, shoved people, and even grabbed one person by the neck while threatening to 'gas him'. Among those targeted was our team member Davide Castro, who was pushed and harassed while documenting the assault. This is what happens when people challenge Europe’s complicity with apartheid: repression at home to silence dissent abroad. But we will not be intimidated. Share this widely! #palestine #politics #europe #democracy #humanrights #EU #brussels #belgium

"Yala Padare" is a classic example, often expressing the longing or anguish of a nāyikā (heroine) yearning for her beloved, Muvva Gopala (Lord Krishna). Set in Bēgaḍa rāgam, with its distinctive melodic contours, the composition delicately brings out emotional subtleties. The use of Tisra Tripuṭa tāḷam, a rhythmic cycle with a unique gait, further enhances its expressive character. I'm scanning my brain inside a plane that’s about to be hurtling toward the ground. Here's why... It tests the effects of zero gravity on the brain, specifically, how well you can tell if stuff is upright or not! Which is really important for doing delicate experiments in space… You put your head in this hole and watch a screen with this little line on it. Every time it changes, you have to hit a button to say whether you think it’s vertical or tilted. It’s surprisingly hard! But this task is special... Experiments like this are giving us valuable data for a future where humans are living long term in space. If you want to see another experiment I did with a blood sucking sleeping bag… subscribe! #space #science #gravity #howitworks #animation #zerog

Disassembly is the part that happens every time, but somehow is always different. Everyone has their own method to disassembly, some people do pre-cleaning, some do parts inspection early, some keep everything organized from the start. Some throw everything in the basket and figure it out later *raises hand* #watches #watchmaking #watchrepair
https://bit.ly/daily_rhythm_exercises Get the PDF of these rhythm exercises. The 11-page book also has tips, reference materials, and practice suggestions. Start easy and get more advanced as you become more comfortable. https://go.classicalguitarshed.com/4nUVJxe Click this link to learn more about our full course for classical guitar. It's organized, structured, and strategic from the beginning, so you make the most of your time and avoid injury and frustration. Build your basics, fill the gaps, and rise to more advanced levels of playing. Are you learning classical guitar or would you like to learn classical guitar? ClassicalGuitarShed.com can help you on the journey. If you want to rise to new levels in your playing, it just takes time and strategic work. To play classical guitar well, you need to know: * how to hold and touch the guitar - form and positioning * how to move your fingers and hands - efficient, clean, and fluid * how to learn pieces - reading music, understanding what you see, ingraining, polishing * how to craft the music so it is beautiful - swells and fades, rhythm, touch * how to practice so all these skills improve over time and don't go away At the root of beautiful playing is a solid technique (aka “the way your hands move”). You may have beautiful music in your head, but if your hands can't play it, it won't come out of the guitar. But bad technique puts a limit on your playing. Speed, tone quality, and control can suffer. Good technique gets stronger and more instinctive with every practice. It forms the bedrock foundation for your music. And you may want to understand music so you learn it more easily and it makes more sense. This can help you avoid the excess frustration and dismay that comes with shoddy practice and prolonged confusion. But playing the notes is not enough. Like an actor bring words to life, we breathe life into our pieces. And we can do this in an organized way, day in and day out, reliably. Great musicians can play wonderfully in any mood. They do not rely on emotions. Instead, they create music that affects our emotions. This is a trained skill, not an inborn talent. Playing classical guitar is a long-term study. It's something we do in our homes as part of our days. We play for ourselves, for the quality it adds to life. We may enjoy playing guitar for others, but most of the time we are alone with our work. There are methods and formulas for great practice. We can use our time well so that see more progress. We can fix the problems and erase the mistakes. And we can enjoy conquering the plentiful challenges that classical guitar music offers. If you plan to play classical guitar for any length of time, it is worth it to get help. It's not something we can do on our own, like folk music. I have a structured and organized course to help you play classical guitar. Unlocking Teilhard de Chardin’s The Phenomenon of Man In this episode of Deep Dive, we plunge into Pierre Teilhard de Chardin’s monumental work The Phenomenon of Man. You’ll discover how this Jesuit–paleontologist wove science, spirit, past and future into a single evolutionary vision. We unpack his core ideas—cosmogenesis, the cosmic law of complexity–consciousness, biogenesis, orthogenesis, the leap to thought, the noosphere, and the ultimate Point Omega. Finally, we explore why a nearly century-old synthesis still offers practical insight for our modern anxieties and collective journey. 0:00 Welcome & show intro 0:12 Introducing The Phenomenon of Man 0:29 Chardin’s unique background & mission 1:38 Cosmogenesis: the universe as becoming 2:06 The “within” & “without” of things 2:42 The cosmic law of complexity–consciousness 3:18 Tangential vs. radial energy 4:26 Biogenesis: the cellular revolution 5:59 Orthogenesis & “directed chance” 6:54 New Genesis: the threshold of reflection 7:58 The noosphere: humanity’s thinking layer 8:30 Forced coalescence & global convergence 9:30 Point Omega: the ultimate center of centers 10:54 Love as the energy of convergence 11:32 Practical relevance & overcoming “malady of space-time” 13:59 Why science needs faith 15:01 Final thought & invitation: your place in the Phenomenon of Man Enjoyed the episode?
