De ontbossing van tropische gebieden moet vóór 2030 worden gestopt om verdere opwarming van de aarde tegen te gaan. Dat spraken wereldleiders in 2021 af tijdens de klimaattop COP26 in Glasgow. Een belangrijke oorzaak van die ontbossing is de wereldwijde sojateelt. Vooral in Brazilië worden grote stukken bos omgezet in landbouwgrond voor soja. Die soja wordt grotendeels geëxporteerd, onder meer naar Nederland, waar het wordt gebruikt in veevoer. Nederland is een van de grootste afnemers van Braziliaanse soja binnen Europa. Veevoederbedrijven stellen dat de soja die zij gebruiken duurzaam is: er zouden geen bomen voor zijn gekapt. Daarmee worden dierlijke producten zoals vlees en melk in Nederlandse supermarkten gepresenteerd als ‘ontbossingsvrij’. Maar klopt dat beeld? Zembla onderzoekt samen met milieuorganisaties waar de soja precies vandaan komt. Uit dat onderzoek blijkt dat het duurzaamheidskeurmerk dat ontbossing moet tegengaan in de praktijk weinig bescherming biedt. Zo komt soja die is verbouwd met behulp van ontbossing, landroof en corruptie toch terecht in de Europese voedselketen. Supermarkten, waaronder Albert Heijn, verkopen vlees en zuivel van dieren die gevoerd zijn met deze soja. Het Wereld Natuur Fonds, medeoprichter van het keurmerk, zegt in Zembla geen vertrouwen meer te hebben in het label. Zembla reisde af naar de Cerrado, een uitgestrekte bossavanne in Brazilië waar de meeste Braziliaanse soja wordt geproduceerd. Dit natuurgebied valt niet onder de voorgestelde Europese anti-ontbossingswet en wordt daarom nauwelijks beschermd. In de Cerrado liggen miljarden tonnen CO₂ opgeslagen, zowel in de bodem als in de vegetatie. Toch wordt het gebied in rap tempo ontbost voor landbouw. Bedrijven zoals Estrondo worden door het Braziliaanse Openbaar Ministerie in verband gebracht met illegale ontbossing, landroof en corruptie. De soja van zulke bedrijven wordt via handelaren en opslagplaatsen verscheept naar Nederland, waar het onder andere belandt bij veevoederbedrijven die leveren aan boeren voor VION en FrieslandCampina. Deze bedrijven voorzien onder meer Albert Heijn van vlees en melk. Zo kunnen consumenten onbedoeld bijdragen aan de vernietiging van de Cerrado, ook als ze producten kopen met een duurzaamheidslabel. Het keurmerk Roundtable for Responsible Soy (RTRS) werd in 2006 opgericht om een markt voor duurzame soja te creëren. Supermarkten en veevoerbedrijven kopen certificaten om de herkomst van soja af te dekken, maar in de praktijk blijkt dat ook leveranciers van gecertificeerde soja betrokken zijn bij ontbossing. Uit satellietbeelden blijkt dat zelfs een leverancier van RTRS-soja in 2020 nog bos heeft gekapt. Het Wereld Natuur Fonds, een van de initiatiefnemers van de RTRS, gelooft niet langer dat het keurmerk effectief is en pleit nu voor bindende wetgeving. Die zou het gebruik van soja uit álle ontboste gebieden moeten verbieden. Ondertussen blijven grote voedselbedrijven grotendeels stil. VION en Ahold Delhaize hebben niet gereageerd op de bevindingen van Zembla. FrieslandCampina laat weten samen met veevoederfabrikant Agrifirm te onderzoeken of een volledig gescheiden, gegarandeerd ontbossingsvrije sojastroom mogelijk is. De RTRS erkent dat hun certificering geen “silver bullet” is, maar stelt dat er al veel verbeterd is. Toch laat het onderzoek zien dat de weg naar daadwerkelijk ontbossingsvrije voedselproductie complex en weerbarstig is. Zembla heeft voor dit verhaal samengewerkt met verschillende natuurbeschermingsorganisaties als Milieudefensie, Greenpeace en Aidenvironmen. During a congressional hearing yesterday, Republican lawmakers accused university leaders of failing to do enough to combat antisemitism on their campuses. That’s a claim that the university officials strongly rejected. The hearing was the latest attempt by Republicans to use what they see as the growing threat against Jews to their political advantage. Korean Meatballs Ingredients 500g (1.1 lbs) beef mince 3 spring onions, finely sliced 3 cloves garlic, finely grated 2.5cm (1in) piece fresh ginger, finely grated 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 tbsp brown sugar 35g (⅓ cup) dried breadcrumbs 20ml (1 tbsp) soy sauce 1 tbsp Gochujang Sea salt and black pepper, to season 1 tbsp peanut oil Sliced spring onions, toasted sesame seeds, steamed rice, to serve Sauce 4 cloves garlic, finely grated 60ml (¼ cup) Gochujang 80ml (⅓ cup) Soy sauce 125ml (½ cup) beef stock 75g (⅓ cup) brown sugar 40ml (2 tbsp) rice vinegar 2 tsp cornflour (cornstarch) 20ml (1 tbsp) water Sea salt, to season Method Step 1: Prep the meatballs combine mince, onions, garlic, ginger, egg, sugar, breadcrumbs, soy sauce and Gochujang in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper and mix until just combined. Form mixture into tablespoon sized meatballs. Step 2: Cook the meatballs Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Cook meatballs for 8-10 minutes, turning to brown all over. Transfer to a large plate. Step 3: Cook the sauce Add the garlic to the pan and cook for 30 seconds. Then add Gochujang, soy, stock, sugar and vinegar. Bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally. Make a slurry with the cornflour and water, then stir this into the sauce and cook, until sauce thickens. Step 4: Finish and serve Return the meatballs to the pan, tossing to coat well, and cook for 1-2 minutes until warmed through. Serve meatballs on steamed rice, sprinkled with extra spring onions and sesame seeds.
