Hundreds of immigrants in Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta gathered for a protest Sunday demanding they be granted asylum. They're among the thousands who remain in Ceuta after most of the 70,000 people who crossed into the enclave in recent weeks seeking protections quickly left. Dozens died, mostly from drowning, in their attempt to reach the Spanish territory amid an intensifying crackdown along the border with Morocco. Many of those who stayed in Ceuta are now forced to sleep on the beach or in the city's outskirts.

De gemeente gaat een vergunningplicht invoeren voor ondernemers op het eerste gedeelte van de Nieuwendijk in de binnenstad. Vanwege 'signalen van criminele activiteiten in winkels' moeten alle ondernemers van huisnummer 1 tot en met 108 verplicht een exploitatievergunning hebben. Volgens de gemeente zijn het vooral winkels gericht op toerisme die de problemen veroorzaken. Het gaat dan om witwassen en drugshandel. De gemeente zegt de afgelopen jaren meermaals signalen te hebben ontvangen over criminele activiteiten in de detailhandel op de Nieuwendijk, waaronder dus witwassen en handel in verdovende middelen. "Zeker in toeristenwinkels komt het vaker voor dat er wordt witgewassen of drugs verhandeld", zeggen verantwoordelijk wethouder Melanie van der Horst (Economie en Binnenstad) en voorzitter van stadsdeel centrum Amélie Strens. "We grijpen nu in om de ondernemers, bewoners en bezoekers in het gebied te helpen en de buurt leefbaarder te maken." "Toeristenwinkels zijn een mooie dekmantel", aldus een woordvoerder van het stadsdeel. "Er is weinig sociale controle en toeristen betalen vaker met cash." Ook spreekt ze van een "hoge marge en omloopsnelheid" van producten, waardoor het makkelijker zou zijn om mee te rommelen. Toch is het doel van de maatregel niet om het aantal toeristenwinkels omlaag te brengen. "Het doel is om malafide ondernemers van de goede te onderscheiden." Vergunning aanvragen In de praktijk betekent de maatregel voor ondernemers dat ze allemaal verplicht een vergunning moeten aanvragen. Dat geldt voor zowel nieuwe als bestaande ondernemers. Voorheen hoefden ondernemers helemaal geen vergunning aan te vragen om een winkel te starten, zolang hun winkel maar binnen het bestemmingsplan van de gemeente viel. Daar komt dus nu verandering in, en "dat is best een zwaar middel", volgens de woordvoerder van het stadsdeel. Bestaande ondernemers mogen openblijven tijdens de beoordeling van hun aanvraag, nieuwe ondernemers mogen pas openen zodra deze voltooid is. Ondernemers die niet aan de Algemeen Plaatselijke Verordening, de wet Bibob en het bedrijfsplan van de gemeente voldoen, krijgen geen vergunning. De maatregel is onderdeel van een groter plan van de gemeente om de binnenstad leefbaarder te maken. De vervolgstappen zijn, volgens Van der Horst en Strens, om te kijken of de vergunningplicht ook op andere plekken in de binnenstad ingevoerd kan worden. Voor veel Amsterdamse families in de autoreis naar Marokko een bijzonder ritueel. Over de voorbereiding, de cadeaus en de aankomst in Marokko is nu een tentoonstelling te zien in het Van Eesterenmuseum. Rond 16.00 uur komt Abdelkader Benali met zijn gezin aanrijden bij het Van Eesterenmuseum vanuit Marokko. In de achterbak ligt een enorme watermeloen, gekocht op de markt in Tanger. "Vroeger nam je altijd wat vanuit Marokko. Ik heb de grootste gekocht die je kan krijgen." Over die reis naar Marokko en de rituelen die erbij horen - zoals het meenemen van cadeau's voor familie - is nu de tentoonstelling Onderweg naar (t)huis' te zien in het Van Eesterenmuseum in Slotermeer. Benali maakte de tentoonstelling samen met Ewa Scheifes en Clara Gomes. "Wij spraken veel mensen die zeiden dat dat ze steeds vaker vliegen naar Marokko, waardoor dit hele ook ritueel verandert", zegt Scheifes. "Toen dachten we dit is een mooi moment om een soort tijdcapsule te maken."   Het favoriete item van Benali komt uit zijn eigen kledingkast. Het vissersjasje, hetzelfde soort dat zijn vader al droeg, vond hij vroeger 'corny', maar inmiddels verzamelt hij ze zelf. "Je moet Belgische valuta bij je hebben, Luxemburgse, Franse, Spaanse en Dirham. Je had tickets bij je. Geen beter jasje om die hele reisadministratie bij je te houden." Vandaag is het afscheid van Peter Faber, de Amsterdamse acteur die 6 augustus op 82-jarige leeftijd overleed. Deze morgen is er in het Zonnehuis in Noord een openbaar afscheid. En vanaf vanmiddag om 16.00 uur rijdt een rouwstoet hem, onder politiebegeleiding, dwars door de stad naar zijn laatste rustplaats.  Bij de uitvaart waren honderden mensen aanwezig om afscheid te nemen. Onder andere buurtbewoners, collega's en jongeren wiens leven Faber op de rit probeerde te krijgen kwamen naar het Zonnehuis. Om 16.00 uur vertrekt de rouwstoet vanaf het Zonneplein door de stad. Die rijdt dan onder andere over de Haarlemmerstraat en de Haarlemmerdijk, waar Faber woonde en veel te vinden was.  De route gaat vanaf het Zonneplein naar de Zonneweg, Meteorenweg, Johan van Hasseltweg, Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg, IJtunnel, Prins Hendrikkade, Kattenburgerstraat, Piet Heinkade, De Ruijtertunnel, Droogbak, Haarlemmerhouttuinen, Kleine Houtstraat, Haarlemmerdijk, Haarlemmerstraat, Singel, Prins Hendrikkade, Foeliestraat, Valkenburgerstraat, en het mr. Visserplein naar zijn laatste rustplaats. Peter Faber overleed nadat hij begin juli werd opgenomen in het ziekenhuis met benauwdheidsproblemen, die later hartproblemen bleken te zijn. Hij werd bekend door zijn vele rollen in onder andere Max Havelaar en Soldaat van Oranje.  Naast acteren zette hij zich ook in voor jongeren uit Noord, waarbij hij nauw samenwerkte met de politie. "Met dankbaarheid voor alles wat hij betekend heeft en met grote waardering denken wij vandaag – de dag van zijn uitvaart- aan het werk en leven van Peter Faber", zegt een woordvoerder van de politie. "Zijn jarenlange inzet voor de jeugd is van onschatbare waarde geweest. Rajiv Menon, a prominent human rights lawyer in the United Kingdom, has been charged with criminal contempt for his closing speech in the trial of his client, Charlotte “Lottie” Head, one of four Palestine Action activists sentenced as terrorists over their involvement in a 2024 protest and raid on an Israeli weapons factory. The charges against Menon are similarly unprecedented. He is accused of encouraging a jury to acquit Head according to their conscience. Menon denies this accusation and says he was simply informing the jury of a prior case that is famous in British legal history. Menon says that, along with the government’s ban on Palestine Action under anti-terrorism laws, the case against him is having a “chilling effect” on protests in the U.K.

The program has come to light in the course of a federal case against 15 Minnesotans who have been accused of “conspiracy” to impede ICE’s immigration enforcement surge in Minnesota. Isaac Sant, one of the defendants in the case, says the charges levied against him are “politically motivated” and “intended to quell dissent.” As part of its spying operation, DHS sent undercover agents to meetings in churches, parks, libraries, schools and union halls and secretly obtained the financial records of left-leaning national organizations such as the Communications Workers of America and Sunrise Movement. “We were sick to hear that we were also in this list of people that were organizing using their First Amendment rights and the right to petition to their government, but also not surprised,” says Emilia González Avalos, the executive director of Unidos MN, a local organization that was one of the groups surveilled by DHS. “This is one of the tactics they have used across the world to repress and scare and disrupt movements that are organizing with other people against racism, that are organizing for justice, and that are organizing for a multiracial, high-functioning democracy.” Subscribe to our Daily Email Digest: https://democracynow.org/subscribe

Volgende week maandag gaat het evenement van start met een grote tent, hernieuwde roeifaciliteiten voor de stad en een flink podium. Voormalig roeier en toernooidirecteur Nico Rienks gelooft in minstens drie keer goud voor Nederland. "Maar het zou ook nul of zes keer kunnen zijn." Vier mensen staan buiten in sportkleding en houden roeispanen en een roeiboot vast. Eén persoon houdt de boot vast, met een Nederlandse vlag aan de roeispaan. De grond is bestraat en op de achtergrond zijn hekwerk en uitrusting te zien. In de linkeronderh Roeien De spanning is voelbaar op en rond de Bosbaan vandaag. Enkele Nederlandse roeiers gaan nog even het water op, maar de meeste boten hangen in afwachting van het topsportevent in het gerenoveerde botenhuis. "Hier hangen alle boten van Team NL'', zegt Rienks trots. Olympisch medaillewinnaar en toernooidirecteur Nico Rienks ziet zelf toe op de laatste opbouw. Het was een flink karwei afgelopen jaar: het kanaal werd gebaggerd, huisjes langs de kant werden opgeknapt en het botenhuis werd in oorspronkelijke staat hersteld. Rienks: "Alle Amsterdamse roeiverenigingen kunnen straks gebruikmaken van deze hele mooie opgekalefaterde faciliteiten." Er worden volgende week 40.000 toeschouwers verwacht. Voor Rienks is het kijken zelfs extra spannend: twee van zijn zoons strijden volgende week om de medailles. "Mijn hartslag is straks twintig keer hoger dan in rust." Als Team NL naar de overwinning roeit, doen ze dat langs stralende boeien. Algen hebben geen grip gekregen op de Bosbaan. "Er zitten prachtige, rechte lijnen in de baan en normaal zijn de boeien al aangeslagen'', zegt Rienks optimistisch. Van 24 augustus tot en met 30 augustus zijn de beste roeiers ter wereld in Amsterdam te zien. Kaarten kosten van 15,50 euro voor staanplaatsen tot 304,00 euro voor een plek in de VIP lounge.
