Lang leek het alleen te bestaan in sciencefictionfilms: onstuitbare drones die samenlevingen kunnen ontwrichten. In de oorlog in Oekraïne tonen drones nu al hun verwoestende slagkracht. Deze kleine, wendbare toestellen weten moeiteloos geavanceerde verdedigingssystemen te omzeilen. Goedkope consumentendrones vormen een nieuw gevaar op het moderne slagveld en ver daarbuiten. Zembla onderzoekt in deze video uit 2022 hoe drones zich in rap tempo hebben ontwikkeld tot een van de grootste uitdagingen voor veiligheid en defensie. Experts waarschuwen al jaren voor de gevaren van drones in oorlog en terrorisme. Hoe kon een ogenschijnlijk onschuldig onbemand vliegtuigje uitgroeien tot een reële dreiging voor nationale veiligheid, ook hier in Nederland? Uit onderzoek van Zembla blijkt dat Nederland kwetsbaar is voor droneaanvallen. Al in 2015 waarschuwde het Ministerie van Justitie en Veiligheid voor de risico’s van consumentendrones. Deze kunnen worden uitgerust met bommen, vuurwapens of chemische stoffen. Toch ontbreekt een sluitend afweermechanisme. Vliegvelden, gevangenissen en legerbases hebben regelmatig te maken met drone-incidenten. Ook nationale evenementen zoals Prinsjesdag en de 4-mei herdenking zijn moeilijk te beveiligen tegen een drone-aanval. Arjen Nijkamp, hoofd van het counter-drone team bij Defensie, wijst op de beperkte effectiviteit van bestaande systemen. Hij spreekt van een “wapenwedloop” waarin we achter de feiten aanlopen. Drones als aanvalsmiddel vragen om een geheel nieuwe benadering van beveiliging. Op buitenlandse missies ervaren Nederlandse militairen al de gevaren van drones. In de Iraakse stad Erbil werden Nederlandse soldaten op een legerbasis geconfronteerd met meerdere drone-aanvallen. De gebruikte drones waren te geavanceerd voor het bestaande verdedigingssysteem. Ook detectie blijft problematisch, zelfs in zwaar beveiligde zones. Drones worden niet alleen gebruikt voor aanslagen. Ze verstoren ook kritieke infrastructuur en worden ingezet voor ongewenste surveillance. In 2018 legden drones het vliegverkeer op luchthaven Gatwick stil, met grote gevolgen. Ook bij kerncentrales en overheidsgebouwen worden verdachte drones steeds vaker waargenomen. De inzet van drones als aanvalswapen begon in 2014 met Islamitische Staat, die consumentendrones gebruikte voor verkenning en later voor aanslagen. Inmiddels duiken drones wereldwijd op, van het Midden-Oosten tot Zuid-Amerika. In de conflicten tussen Israël en Iran spelen drones inmiddels een centrale rol, met aanvallen op militaire doelen, infrastructuur en zelfs steden. Ook in Gaza zijn drones onderdeel van het dagelijkse oorlogsgeweld, ingezet voor zowel surveillance als gerichte aanvallen. Aanslagen op politieke leiders in Venezuela en Irak tonen hoe wijdverspreid en veelzijdig deze dreiging is. Deskundigen vrezen dat ook Nederland niet buiten schot zal blijven. De Nederlandse politie werkt aan een counterdrone-team, maar de aanpak is nog in ontwikkeling. DJI, verantwoordelijk voor gevangenissen, meldt dat smokkel en surveillance via drones een groeiend probleem vormen. Niet alle gevangenissen beschikken over detectiesystemen, terwijl drones boven zwaar bewaakte instellingen zoals die in Vught regelmatig worden gesignaleerd. De behoefte aan landelijke dekking is urgent. This video describes the key experiments that were performed to elucidate the modern structure of the atom. It starts by discussing Dalton’s theory that the atom was indivisible. It then explains how the cathode ray tube experiment by Thomson established that atoms contain negatively charged particles called electrons and led to the plum pudding model of the atom. Subsequently Millikan’s oil drop experiment, which established the charge and mass of an electron is described. Finally, Rutherford’s gold foil experiment, which disproved the plum pudding model of the atom and established the modern structure of an atom, a dense positively charged nucleus with surrounding electrons, is presented.
