This wasn't apathy. Around 170,000 people who hadn't been voting came out to vote AfD. Half the self-employed backed them. Nearly half of salaried employees. It shows the Louisville and Nashville Railroad's operations in Indiana and southwestern Kentucky. The railroad began operating diesel locomotives in 1939 and stopped operating steam locomotives in 1957. The last steam locomotive to run on the line was a J-4 class 2-8-2 Mikado, number 1882. This film shows some of the progression in steam technology that occurred during the 20th Century, in that it ends with footage of one of the railroad's two streamlined trains. It also shows engines built at the Kentucky Locomotive Works in Louisville. The Works constructed a substantial number of steam engines including 31 classes of Consolidation 2-8-0s. 0:00 Main titles. Locomotive 1040 shown at 2:13 is one of the H-23 class Consolidation engines. At 2:46, #1191 is an H-25 class built by Rogers in 1907. At 3:10 locomotive #1259 of the H-27A class arrives in Louisville. This engine was built by the L.& N. shops. The car shown at 3:35 is apparently a "Jim Crow" type passenger car. This was a segregated railroad car designated for Black passengers during the era of Jim Crow laws in the United States, which enforced racial segregation and required separate but unequal accommodations. At 3:41, #1303 from the Kentucky Locomotive Works built in 1911. At 4:04, 0-6-0 switch locomotive 2079 built by Rogers is shown. At 5:00, L.&N.'s first 0-8-0 switch locomotive #2114 is shown at Evansville. At 6:34, a Pacific type K-4 4-6-2 is shown, number #230, pulling a passenger train. This is followed by engine No. 239, another K-4 fitted with 69-inch drivers and built in 1918. At 7:54, a K-5 locomotive #242 is shown at Evansville, built by the Richmond Locomotive Works. This engine had 73-inch drivers. At 8:41, locomotive #260 is shown crossing the Ohio River bridge at Henderson, Kentucky; this was a K-48 built by the Kentucky Locomotive Works in 1922. At 9:08, K-5 #270 is shown, built by Baldwin in 1923 and pictured at Howell, Indiana. At 9:52, 4-6-2 engine #272 is shown at Evansville, this was built by Brooks in 1924. It hauls a passenger train with multiple Pullman cars. At 10:36, engine #275 is shown. This K-5 was equipped with a bigger tender than available previously, to extend range between water stops. This engine was streamlined in 1940 and assigned the name "South Wind". At 11:09 the engine is seen pulling the Dixie Flagler passenger train on the trestle across the Ohio River at Henderson, Kentucky. At 11:46 it is seen at Sebree, Kentucky. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad, commonly called the L&N, was a Class I railroad that operated freight and passenger services in the southeast United States. Chartered by the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1850, the road grew into one of the great success stories of American business. Operating under one name continuously for 132 years, it survived the Civil War and Great Depression and waves of social and technological change. Under Milton H. Smith, president of the company for 30 years, the L&N grew from a road with less than three hundred miles of track to a 6,000-mile system serving fourteen states. The L&N eventually extended its reach to St. Louis, Memphis, Atlanta, and New Orleans. The railroad was economically strong throughout its lifetime, earning the nickname, "The Old Reliable". In the 1970s the railroad became a subsidiary of the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad and within a decade it was absorbed entirely. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. In 2020, the Grand-Duchy became the first country in the world to make its public transport completely free for both residents and visitors. 🎤 Our reporter @morgane_anneix, herself from the Luxembourgish countryside, takes you for a tour and asks: did it actually change people’s travel habits? ☝️ 💸 Now, as to the other question you’re probably asking yourself: no, abolishing fares cost the country surprisingly little. The reason: even before becoming entirely free, public transport was already heavily subsidised by the state, making tickets quite cheap. A single trip by train, for example, cost only €2, even if you were crossing the entire country. At the time of the launch, ticket revenue loss was estimated to be around 41 million per year. This covered only 8% of the total cost of running the network (e.g. maintenance operations, conductors’ salaries etc.) 🚗 Still, car culture remains very ingrained in the country: despite free public transport, Luxembourg still has one of the highest car ownership rates in the EU, according to Eurostat. ➡️ What would you do if public transport were free where you live? De chef-kok van Café Wu trok afgelopen week aan de bel over 'no-shows': gasten die wel reserveren, maar niet komen en niks van zich laten horen. Uit een rondgang blijkt dat meer kleine restaurants in de stad hier last van hebben. "Omzetverlies, maar ook de sfeer lijdt eronder." Ling Wu, eigenaar van Café Wu op de Dappermarkt heeft er tegenwoordig een dagtaak aan om te controleren of haar gasten ook echt komen. 's Ochtends ontvangt iedereen met een reservering een herinneringsbericht, 's middags belt Ling persoonlijk de hele lijst af. "Soms begin ik met 44 namen en blijven er 26 over." Bij Café Wu betaal je twintig euro aanbetalingskosten, toch gebeurt het 'minstens een keer per week' dat gasten niet op komen dagen. En dat zorgt voor frustratie, zegt TImo de Beurs, chef-kok bij Wu. "Je begint hier om 12.00 uur. Je snijdt alles en bent er klaar voor. Dan zie je een hele mooie, volle zaak min één tafeltje die mooi opgedekt is. Dat is niet leuk." Maar belangrijker nog is dat het voor kleine restaurants als Wu ook financiële gevolgen kan hebben, legt hij uit. "Het is soms het verschil tussen quitte spelen en verlies maken. Dat er een vaste verbinding over het IJ moet komen, daarover is iedereen in de Stopera het wel eens. Maar de discussie over hóe die verbinding eruit moet komen te zien is weer opgelaaid nu duidelijk is geworden dat de kosten voor de geplande Oostbrug veel hoger zullen uitvallen dan verwacht. Ook een ruime meerderheid van het AT5-panel twijfelt over de aanleg. Hoe kijken politieke partijen naar eventuele alternatieven? Een fietstunnel genaamd IJ-klopper, een extra metrostation bij de Sixhaven, één buis van de IJ-tunnel bestemmen voor fietsers of zelfs een kabelbaan. Ideeën genoeg voor een vaste oeververbinding. Onder de naam Sprong over het IJ werd uiteindelijk de knoop doorgehakt: de verbinding met Noord wordt gemaakt met de bouw van een Oost- en Westbrug. De bruggen kwamen als voorkeursvariant uit het adviesrapport van commissie-D’Hooghe. De twee bruggen zorgen voor een betere verspreiding van verkeersdrukte over de stad. Bovendien kan de sociale veiligheid goed gewaarborgd worden, in tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld een tunnel. Als eerste moet de Oostbrug er komen, de oplevering staat gepland voor 2034. Inmiddels is bekend dat de kosten van deze brug mogelijk van 325 naar 850 miljoen euro kunnen stijgen. Voor een meerderheid van het AT5-panel reden om een oproep te doen aan de politiek: hou niet halsstarrig vast aan de Oostbrug en onderzoek ook alternatieven. VVD: nog altijd alternatieven VVD'er Daan Wijnants, fractievoorzitter van de grootste oppositiepartij in de raad, liet vorige week blijken dat wat hem betreft de alternatieven voor de Oostbrug nog altijd op tafel liggen. “Ik denk dat we daar een serieus gesprek over moeten voeren”, zei hij in het AT5-programma Stemming op de Stopera. Volgens Wijnants kunnen de kosten van de brug nog wel eens verder oplopen. Ook ziet hij meer waarde in de komst van de Westbrug. “Uiteindelijk is de Westbrug, als het gaat om woningbouw en de vervoerswaarde, veel belangrijker.” PRO: hou vast aan Oostbrug Coalitiepartij PRO Amsterdam houdt vooralsnog vast aan de Oostbrug. Raadslid Mohamed Belkasmi benadrukt het belang van de komst van een verbinding met Noord, en ziet nu geen reden om af te wijken van de pannen voor de Oostbrug. Dat er voor de gestegen kosten een oplossing moet komen, ziet ook Belkasmi. Daarvoor wijst het PRO-raadslid naar de wethouder: “Dat is iets wat we de komende tijd met elkaar gaan verkennen en met elkaar gaan onderzoeken. Het is ook aan het college de verantwoordelijkheid om de dekking daarvoor te vinden.” Een brede rivier met aan weerszijden een stadsgezicht. Foto: AT5 Belkasmi hoopt dat de Vervoerregio, het samenwerkingsverband van alle regiogemeenten en Amsterdam, bij kan dragen in het oplossen van het financiële probleem dat is ontstaan. Hoewel afgesproken is dat de Vervoerregio de helft van de kosten voor de brug zou betalen, is het aan wethouder Elise Moeskops om opnieuw het gesprek met hen aan te gaan nu de kosten dusdanig zullen stijgen. “Wat de uitkomst daarvan is, daar word ik als raadslid graag van op de hoogte gehouden”, aldus Belkasmi. De vraag is dus of de kostenstijging opnieuw voor uitstel zal zorgen, of zelfs het politieke debat over de Sprong over het IJ nieuw leven in zal blazen. Raming nog niet definitief Tijdens de raadsvergadering van 2 september gaf wethouder Moeskops aan dat de kostenstijging nog niet vaststaat, hoewel uit een recente raming de kosten van de brug minimaal lijken te verdubbelen. Maar volgens Moeskops was de raming nog niet goed uitgekristalliseerd. Wanneer dit wel het geval is, zal Moeskops het definitieve prijskaartje met de gemeenteraad delen. Dat is volgens haar ook het moment om “de democratische discussie te voeren” over de wenselijkheid van de Oostbrug. Volgens de wethouder zijn de andere opties voor de verbinding over het IJ in het verleden zorgvuldig onderzocht. In een interview met AT5 afgelopen week benadrukt de wethouder dat de Oostbrug volgens haar nog steeds de beste keuze is: "Dit is op het moment het allerbeste idee dat er is en vooral het snelst." Naar verwachting zal de definitieve kostenraming in het voorjaar van 2027 gedeeld worden met de raad. De beelden gaan het land rond, mensen zijn geschokt: hoe kan dit hier gebeuren? Volgens journalist Rania Khalek is dat de verkeerde vraag. Het gaat niet om hoe dit hier kan gebeuren, maar om waarom het hier ook een keer moest gebeuren. Khalek noemt dat patroon de imperiale boemerang: geweld, technologie en controle die, vaak door Westerse landen, eerst ver weg worden beproefd, maar na verloop van tijd gewoon terugkomen op eigen bodem. De Martinikaanse schrijver en politicus Aimé Césaire had dat patroon al door, lang voordat er een handig woord voor bestond. In zijn boek Discours sur le colonialisme, uit 1950 alweer, legt hij iets uit dat nog steeds klopt: het Europese fascisme kwam niet zomaar uit de lucht vallen. Het was gewoon terug van weggeweest, van de koloniën, waar het al die tijd al werd geoefend. Hij noemde het un formidable choc en retour, een formidabele terugslag. Simpel gezegd: wat je over de grenzen normaliseert, komt op een dag gewoon weer bij je langs. Ruim zeventig jaar later duikt Khalek in die gedachte en gaat op zoek naar hoe die terugslag er vandaag precies uitziet. Ze komt uit op vijf soorten. Je hebt de migratieboemerang: oorlogen in Irak, Libië, Syrië en Afghanistan die vluchtelingenstromen op gang brengen, en diezelfde stromen die vervolgens thuis worden ingezet om rechts electoraal succes te bezorgen. De veiligheidsboemerang: interventies die eerst extremisme kweken, en daarna als excuus dienen voor nog meer surveillance in eigen land. De technologische boemerang, misschien wel de meest ongemakkelijke: wapens en algoritmes die eerst worden losgelaten op Palestijnen, Irakezen of Libanezen, en later gewoon terugkeren als grensbewaking of predictive policing bij ons om de hoek. Er is de militarisatieboemerang, die van politiekorpsen in de VS en Europa langzaam iets laat groeien dat verdacht veel op een bezettingsmacht lijkt. En tot slot de antidemocratische boemerang: verzet tegen al die oorlogen wordt, hoe voorspelbaar, zelf weer gecriminaliseerd. Khalek is er glashelder over: Gaza is voor haar geen uitzondering, maar een testlab. Wat daar wordt uitgeprobeerd, duikt een paar jaar later op aan de grens met Mexico, of in de surveillance van een activist twee straten verderop. ‘Battle-tested en combat-proven’, zo prijzen de bedrijven hun eigen wapens aan. De imperiale boemerang heeft dus verschillende gezichten. Maar het onderliggende principe is altijd hetzelfde: elk laat zien hoe repressieve technieken en wapens die eerst in het buitenland werden ingezet om imperialisme af te dwingen, uiteindelijk terugkeren naar de imperial core: de machtige westerse landen, waar ze tegen hun eigen burgers zullen worden gebruikt. Wat we als een ver-van-ons-bed-show beschouwden, blijkt in werkelijkheid toch niet zo ver van ons af te staan. Imperiaal geweld kent geen grenzen en maakt geen onderscheid. Maar de hoop is nog niet verloren. In de woorden van Khalek: ‘Er bestaat een betere toekomst. Als we er maar voor vechten. Het duurde even voordat Ajax op gang kwam in Sittard, maar toen het eenmaal begon te lopen ging het hard. Dankzij vier goals in de tweede helft won Ajax vanavond met 1-5 van Fortuna. En zo stapte Míchel Sánchez met een goed gevoel de bus in voor de lange terugreis naar Amsterdam. Die ruim twee uur benut hij door zich voor te bereiden op de wedstrijd tegen Willem II dinsdag, zo vertelde hij na aflloop.
