He worked with Hans Bjelkhagen on technology to make true-color holograms and assisted in the development of the three-dimensional moving holograms. His research led to simple and economical holograms. The film explains the science and promise of holography, beginning with the development of lasers and the discovery that interference patterns from coherent waves can store three-dimensional images. Demonstrations using water, sound, and light show how holograms capture the full light field of an object, allowing it to be reconstructed even if the plate is broken. In het grote gebouw aan de Zeeburgerdijk in Oost moesten achttien woningen en kantoorruimte komen, maar door fouten van de aannemer ligt de verbouwing nu al geruime tijd stil. "Ze maakten enorme fouten", zegt de buurman. Tot enige tijd geleden zat er nog een maaltijdbezorger in het pand, maar sinds die vertrokken is, staat het statige pand aan het begin van de Zeeburgerdijk leeg. Dat valt ook op bij buurtbewoners. "Ik loop altijd een rondje, eerst aan deze kant, dan naar de achterkant. Dan zie je daar dat het helemaal open ligt. Ik ben benieuwd wat er gaat gebeuren." Volgens de gemeente ligt er een vergunning voor achttien woningen en kantoorruimte, maar is de verbouwing met spoed stilgelegd. Het pand zou mogelijk instabiel zijn nadat er zoveel zand was weggegraven dat de heipalen bloot kwamen te liggen. Volgens een medewerker van de Regenbooggroep, de buren in het naastgelegen pand, dreigde ook hun gebouw in het gat te verdwijnen. "Ze maakten enorme fouten." Ook het gat in de achterkant van het gebouw is volgens de gemeente ontstaan door de werkzaamheden. "Deze werkzaamheden zijn niet conform opgave constructeur gerealiseerd. Mede hierdoor - naast de droogliggende heikoppen - hebben wij moeten ingrijpen", schrijft de gemeente in een reactie. De werkzaamheden liggen momenteel stil. Beschilderde elektriciteitshuisjes, picknicktafels en een opgeknapt klimtoestel. Het is een kleine greep uit alle uitgevoerde initiatieven vanuit buurtbudgetten. Door de stopzetting van deze regeling kunnen bewoners niet meer stemmen op zelfbedachte initiatieven voor in de buurt. Dit tot teleurstelling van Stefanie Jansen, coördinator van Netwerk de Pijp: ''Hier moet budget voor blijven, dit zijn de dingen die de buurt leuk maken.'' Zelf een plan indienen of stemmen op andermans idee voor in de wijk? Door de buurtbudgetten gaat definitief een streep. Dat maakte burgemeester Halsema vorige week bekend. Jansen vindt dit 'jammer' en ziet juist het succes van de initiatieven in haar eigen wijk: ''Hier doen heel veel diverse mensen mee met initiatieven via lokale partijen.'' Ontmoetingsplek Een van de succesvolle initiatieven volgens Jansen is het speelpleintje op het Smaragdplein: ''Voorheen was het een plek waar veel jongeren overlast veroorzaakten, maar sinds een initiatief van een paar buurtbewoners is het pleintje aangepast en is de overlast afgenomen.'' Op het pleintje zijn schilderingen aangebracht op het elektriciteitshuisje, picknicktafels geplaatst en is het klimtoestel opgeknapt. De initiatiefnemer van het opgeknapte pleintje, Marijke Verboom ziet ook het succes van haar eigen initiatief: ''Het is veel meer dan een mooie plek geworden, hier ontmoeten mensen elkaar''. Samen met andere buurtbewoners kon ze door de buurtbudgetten het pleintje opknappen: ''Dit maakt mijn omgeving fijn om in te wonen.'' Verboom begrijpt daarom ook niet waarom de gemeente de buurtbudgetten afschaft: ''Ik snap dat het veel energie kost, maar ik ben wel benieuwd in welke vorm het dan zou moeten. Ik zie dat nu niet voor me.'' Onvoldoende effect De reden van het stopzetten van de buurtbudgetten is, volgens burgemeester Halsema, dat het relatief te veel ambtelijke capaciteit zou kosten en onvoldoende effect zou hebben. Momenteel wordt er gekeken naar andere manieren om het geld te besteden. Voorheen konden bewoners die een idee hadden voor de buurt daarvoor een buurtbudget aanvragen. Andere bewoners konden vervolgens stemmen. De ideeën met de meeste stemmen maakten aanspraak op een buurtbudget. Hoe dit in de toekomst vorm zal krijgen, is nog niet bekend. The demonstrations began in September at a single school in the economically deprived suburbs of Paris, where students protested teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms and dilapidated school buildings beset by rats, falling debris and more. But the scope of the protests has widened amid a violent crackdown by French police. French authorities have arrested more than 5,000 people, largely underage students, since the movement began. Violent police tactics have led to serious injuries. One protester lost an eye after being hit by a rubber bullet, while another lost a hand when he picked up a police stun grenade. We hear from an anonymous protester who describes the violence meted out on students, who "aren't even adults yet," and from Claire Vigneau, general secretary of Fédération Syndicale Étudiante, the French student union, who reports from a protest in Rennes, Brittany, "where we are trying to escape from the policemen that are chasing us with tear gas and with water cannon[s]." "The amount of spending that France has done on education has stagnated, if not declined," explains French American journalist Cole Stangler. "The critiques that high school students are making are actually very similar to what teachers' unions have been saying for quite some time." "Everyone is deeply, deeply angry. We are completely fed up [with] the living conditions, the school conditions, the work conditions that we have," says Alys Rowlands, a university student in Lille and also a member of Fédération Syndicale Étudiante. "The true violence is the violence of the state that we are being faced with all day, every day, all year. That's the true violence: having no money, having difficulty finishing the month, having less and less help from the state, having to choose between eating and putting your heating on during the winter." Wist je dat je in de Oude Kerk een van de best bewaarde historische orgels ter wereld kan vinden? 🎶 Tom en Josephine van Ommetje met Tom vertellen FC Centrum over de geschiedenis van dit 300 jaar oude orgel. Met zijn gouden details en rijkversierde ornamenten is het een indrukwekkend geheel. Niet gek dus dat de bouw ervan een heus prestigeproject was. Het orgel werd bespeeld door een vaste stadsorganist, niemand minder dan Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. De naam vertelt eigenlijk een heel ander verhaal. Kort na de oplevering begon de Oude Kerk te verzakken, waardoor het orgel met spoed gedemonteerd moest worden. Tussen 1738 en 1742 bouwde de Duitse orgelbouwer Johann Caspar Müller het, met enkele belangrijke wijzigingen, weer op. En die ingreep leverde het zijn naam op: het Vater-Müller orgel. "We slammed the brakes on $7 billion worth of corrupt construction contracts," says Laiken Jordahl, a national public lands advocate with the Center for Biological Diversity, which sued to block the expansion. "We have effectively stopped construction across West Texas, and it's incredible." Jordahl also responds to the Trump administration's excavation of a 200-year-old cottonwood tree on the Arizona-Mexico border that had been protected by activists for months. "Watching those videos of them toppling this ancient tree that was very likely older than the border itself is symbolic of how DHS has treated the border region. Health authorities believe the outbreak first began in January but was not detected until May, in part due to cuts in global health investments, like the dismantling of USAID. Since then, over 8,000 cases have been recorded, with more than 4,000 fatalities so far. From Bunia, Ituri province, the epicenter of the outbreak, we speak to Congolese journalist Akilimali Chomachoma. Chomachoma describes the strain on the underfunded Congolese healthcare system as the disease spreads. Many frontline workers have not been paid for months. "We are seeing this outbreak emerge, and really unfurl, in a setting of decreased global health support," says Craig Spencer, a doctor and public health expert based in the United States who contracted Ebola while on a medical mission to Guinea in 2014. "The U.S. has not shown up in the same way that it has in previous Ebola outbreaks." Spencer also comments on the "unprecedented" measles outbreak in the United States, which he warns is likely to continue and lead to additional deaths. Sinds afgelopen week heeft het Theo van Goghpark op IJburg een eigen meiden hangplek. Meteen aan het begin van het park zijn de felgekleurde picknickbanken niet te missen. Dit initiatief kwam tot stand nadat uit een enquête van stadsdeel Oost bleek dat meiden zich voornamelijk in de omgeving van dit park onveilig voelde. Trots wijst de 13-jarige Kylaijah aan wat ze precies geschilderd heeft bij de banken. "Ik ben begonnen met dat roze en dat wit". Zij was één van de meiden uit de buurt die meedacht over dit initiatief. De picknicktafels staan hier sinds een week en moeten ervoor gaan zorgen dat de meiden uit de buurt zich weer vaker in het park laten zien. Ook zij gaf aan zich wel eens onveilig te voelen hier in het park. Uit een enquête en vele gesprekken in het stadsdeel bleek dat meiden zich vaak onveilig voelen in dit park. Grootste reden zijn jongens die zich er in grote groepen verzamelen en van alles naar de meiden roepen of ze nafluiten, voornamelijk 's avonds. Daarmee zorgen ze ervoor dat andere bezoekers van het park vaker de keuze maken om weg te blijven. Als het aan stadsdeelvoorzitter Emre Ünver ligt, is dat snel verleden tijd zijn, hij hoopt dat deze picknicktafels ervoor zorgen dat meiden zich zelfverzekerder voelen in het park. "Het is een hangplek, maar ook een plek om elkaar te ontmoeten, in de openbare ruimte. Girls Forward De stichting Girls Forward heeft geholpen met dit project. Eén van de meidenwerkers is Jady. Zij herkende veel van de verhalen uit de buurt. "Ik hoop voor de toekomst dat meiden zich veilig genoeg voelen om samen met hun vriendinnen hier naar het park te gaan en gewoon gesprekken te kunnen voeren, niet afgeleid te worden of geïntimideerd worden door de andere jongens die zich hier in het park bevinden." Het idee is dat er in de toekomst meer van dit soort 'chill spots' voor meiden komen. Zo is het eerste project wat op de planning staat het graffitihokje in hetzelfde park.
