En dat zorgt soms zelfs voor rijen van groepjes, vaak toeristen, die met elkaar op de foto willen. Op sociale media worden de foto's die gemaakt zijn in Amsterdamse hokjes massaal gedeeld. Hoewel bijna iedereen tegenwoordig een smartphone met camera heeft, zijn veel toeristen fan van de geprinte foto's uit het hokje. "Het is iconisch, de kleine strip met foto's. Het voelt specialer." Binnenstadsbewoners merken ook dat het druk is rond de hokjes. "Van vrijdag, zaterdag, zondag is er hier helemaal geen plek. Dan staat er een rij van 50 tot 100 meter." The Jack Pine Run is a grueling endurance motorcycle race through the rugged terrain of Northern Michigan. The winner receives a cowbell (shown at :55 in the film). The course is a mix of steep sandy hills, treacherous bogs, and deep marshes. Oscar Lenz, course designer and racer, once explained that a good Jack Pine Run is designed to be "tough, but not too tough. If it's dry, the deep, soft sand hills become the primary obstacle for bikes, forcing riders to "eat sand" as they push them, and if it rains, the clay backroads turn into a "sea of mud" that makes the bikes slide uncontrollably." Most if not all of the motorcycles seen in the film appear to be Harley Davidsons, including some in the "Class B" race with sidecars (or "side hacks"). The film shows 1931 champion Dan Raymond with Mayor Gray of Lansing, Michigan at 00:59. The film also includes P.K. Martin, the publisher of the Lansing State Journal which was a sponsor. At 01:28, Goodyear cameraman George A. Blake and referee Clarence Huot. The race gets underway at 2:00, and at 5:30 reaches Standish. At 8:48 the racers arrive at "night control" at Grayling. At 9:00, rider Bill Heiserman is showing checking in. At 9:28, the next morning, Marty Moore thanks R.D. Brown for his efficient handling of the control point. At 10:48, riders are shown lost on the course, checking a map. At 11:56, Mayor Gray greets finishers at Lansing. Oscar Lenz and Dan Raymond tied for first place. Team prize winners from Grand Rapids are shown at 12:46. At 13:00 Frank E. Hennen of New York is shown as the Class B sidecar winner. The film ends with shots of Raymond, Hall and Lenz, all outstanding riders. Oscar Lenz and Dan Raymond were major rivals in the Jack Pine Endurance Run during the 1920s and 1930s, with a notable, direct competition occurring in 1932 when they tied for the top prize. The film was released in the 1930s as part of the Paramount Pictorial series. Leaf was an accomplished musician who, at the age of 10, was playing as a soloist with the Omaha Symphony Orchestra. At age sixteen, she had earned a scholarship at Julliard School of Music in New York where she began preparing for a career as a concert pianist. Her sister's interest in the organ brought the organ to her attention. Once Leaf's interest in the organ was piqued, she began to focus her attention on playing the theatre organ. She is probably best known for her own organ programs on the National Network of Columbia Broadcasting Systems and for providing background music for well-known soap operas of the times. Bijna acht maanden na de verwoestende brand is de Vondelkerk helemaal verdwenen achter steigers en steigerdoek. De bedoeling is dat de kerk in 2028 in ere is hersteld, maar eigenaar Stadsherstel komt nog zo'n drie miljoen euro tekort. Met de verkooptentoonstelling Vondelkerk in Vuur en Vlam in de Amstelkerk wordt geprobeerd om een deel van dat geld bij elkaar te krijgen. Van houtskooltekeningen tot foto's en van schilderijen tot metaalkunst: elk kunstwerk in de gratis te bezoeken benefiettentoonstelling heeft een connectie met de Vondelkerk én is te koop. Tekort van drie miljoen euro Hoewel de Vondelkerk goed was verzekerd, wordt lang niet alles vergoed. De totale kosten van het herstel schat eigenaar Stadsherstel op zo'n 20 miljoen euro, naar zo'n 3 miljoen euro wordt nog gezocht. "We hebben al zo'n 4 ton aan crowdfunding opgehaald dankzij 5000 donateurs", legt hoofd Fondsenwerving Stella van Heezik van Stadsherstel uit. "Dus dat is niet genoeg." De expositie is een idee van oud-huurder van de Vondelkerk Bas Lubberhuizen en kunstenaar Roy Licher. Om extra geld in het laatje te brengen, stelden verschillende kunstenaars hun werken beschikbaar. De opbrengst uit de verkoop van de werken is deels of geheel bestemd voor het herstel van de kerk. De prijzen voor de kunstwerken variëren van enkele honderden tot een paar duizend euro. Inmiddels zijn twaalf van de in totaal zo'n 35 werken al verkocht. "Als alle werken uit de expositie worden verkocht, dan schat ik de opbrengst op zo'n 25.000 euro", aldus Heezik. Met een tekort van drie miljoen klinkt dat als een druppel op een gloeiende plaat, maar volgens Heezik is 'elke druppel bij elkaar toch weer een fles vol'. Behalve met de tentoonstelling wordt ook nog op andere manieren gezocht naar extra inkomsten. Wie dat wil, kan bijvoorbeeld een stukje Vondelkerk kopen. Deels verband hout is door cliënten van Cordaan van een brandmerk van de kerk voorzien en samen met een certificaat van echtheid voor 50 euro te koop in de museumwinkel, naast de Amstelkerk. Daarnaast zijn er maandag 17 augustus en maandag 24 augustus gratis lezingen over de restauratie en over Vondelkerk-architect Pierre Cuypers, waarbij de vrijwillige bijdrage ten goede komt aan de Vondelkerk. Since July of last year, British police have arrested over 3,000 people for expressing support for the group Palestine Action. Last year, the British government declared the group to be a terrorist organization, making support for the group punishable by up to 14 years in prison. Neve Gordon, an Israeli professor of international law and human rights, was one of the three co-chairs of last year’s Gaza Tribunal, an independent, nongovernmental inquiry into the United Kingdom’s complicity in the Israeli genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. He breaks down the first set of trials and sentencings of several Palestine Action activists who were accused of property destruction. The activists were not allowed to speak about their motivations in court, and were later sentenced under the U.K.’s counterterrorism laws, which carry heavier prison sentences. The terrorism charges were not part of the jury trial, but levied separately by a judge.
