My dream watch! I finally found it, a Heuer Carrera in need of a restoration. This is a first execution model from the early 1960's and I think it's one of the most balanced and beautiful vintage watches you can find. And it was quite a project! #watches #watchmaking #watchrepair

Potato Buns Makes: 8 Prep time: 30 mins + 2 hours approx rising time Cook time: 40 mins Ingredients 2 brushed potatoes (Sebago, Dutch cream, Russet, Maris Piper), peeled, chopped 1 cup (250ml) buttermilk, warmed 7g packet (2½ tsp) dried yeast ¼ cup (55g) caster sugar 80g unsalted butter, diced, at room temperature 2 eggs 3⅓ cups (500g) bread flour 1 tsp salt Method Place the potatoes in a saucepan of salted water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, cook for 12-15 minutes until fork tender. Drain potatoes and let them steam in the colander for a couple of minutes to remove excess water. Mash the potatoes in a medium bowl using a hand masher or potato ricer and set aside 1 cup worth. Mix the milk, yeast and 1 tbsp of the sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer and let sit for 10 minutes, until it becomes foamy. Add remaining sugar, butter, 1 egg, half the flour, warm mashed potato and salt and fit the dough hook attachment. Mix on low speed until a shaggy dough forms, then add the remaining flour. Increase the speed to medium, and mix for 5 minutes, until the dough is pulling away cleanly from the sides of the bowl. Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm, draft free place for 1-1½ hours until doubled in size. Punch dough down and transfer to a lightly floured bench, divide into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a tight ball and place on a large oven tray lined with baking paper, 5cm apart from each other. Cover loosely again with a clean tea towel or oiled cling wrap and place in a warm place until risen again about 50% (approximately 30 minutes). Preheat oven to 190°C fan forced (375°F). Whisk remaining egg and brush tops of rolls lightly. Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until light golden. Cool on the tray for 15 minutes, before transferring to a wire to cool completely before slicing and using for your favourite sandwich. #cooking #baking #shorts
Red light devices promise a lot—but do they deliver? Wirecutter supervising editor Rory Evans demystifies the science behind them, shares her top picks, and explains who might want to think twice before trying one. Correction: In this episode, we misstated that the irradiance, or power over an area, of red light devices is measured in megawatts per square centimeters. It is measured in milliwatts, not megawatts. Israel’s war in Gaza is losing support rapidly, with the UK, France and Canada all now saying it is “intolerable, unacceptable and wholly disproportionate.” And if the United States pulled its aid and suspended its arms sales, Israel’s war on Hamas would end very quickly. Now debate has moved a long way beyond Israel’s right to defend itself and is increasingly centered on whether it is committing war crimes and whether the US should wield its influence to make it stop. To discuss this, Piers Morgan welcomes libertarian commentator, comedian and host of ‘Part of the Problem’ podcast, Dave Smith and barrister, international lawyer and passionate supporter of Israel, Natasha Hausdorff. Piers then speaks to Gazan journalist and founder of ‘We Are Not Numbers’ Ahmed Alanouq, who has lost more than 20 members of his family in Israeli airstrikes - and earlier this year posted on X that he blamed Piers for their murder. Nietzschean philosopher Babette Babich, clinical psychologist Frank Tallis, existentialist philosopher Jonathan Webber, and linguist philosopher Sandra Laugier discuss finding purpose in life and whether we can live without it. And from Aristotle's human flourishing, to Kant's pursuit of the highest good, philosophers have offered many answers to the why of life. They are joined today by a host of psychologists, pundits and politicians all offering their own solutions. But the goal and purpose of life remains unknown. Many have thought ‘happiness’ might be the answer but it turns out to be a largely English-speaking and European phenomenon. For the Chinese, loyalty and stability are the predominant goals. What we do know is that in the West more than half of young adults report that they lack 'meaning, purpose... and knowing what to do with their life,' Is the mistake to look for a goal in the first place? Is the purpose of life to choose a purpose and make it our own? Or is the unknown answer to the why of life the very thing that gives life its edge, its meaning and its value? #purpose #lifemeaning #philosophy Parisian philosopher Sandra Laugier, Nietzschian philosopher Babette Babich, clinical psychologist Frank Tallis, and author of Rethinking Existentialism Jonathan Webber debate the purpose of life. Invisible Persuasion | Edward Bernays, Propaganda & the Hidden Forces Guiding Your Choices What if the most important decisions you make—what to buy, how to vote, which causes to back—were quietly engineered long before they felt like your idea? In this deep-dive we unpack the writings of Edward Bernays, the self-styled “father of public relations,” to see how his neutral-sounding “systematic effort” to sway opinion evolved into the psychological marketing and political campaigning that dominates modern life. Drawing only on Bernays’ own texts, we explore why he thought propaganda was inevitable—and even necessary—in a mass democracy, how Freud’s insights about hidden motives turned old-school sales pitches into emotion-driven lifestyle engineering, the mechanics behind legendary campaigns (piano “music rooms,” Ivory Soap carving, Jackson Heights real-estate hype), and what his idea of an “invisible government” run by an “intelligent minority” means for business, politics, education, social reform, art and science today. Stay to the end for practical cues on spotting (and resisting) these subtle nudges in your own feed. I said it, we’ve all had enough avocado toast (and yes I’m looking at you Babe). So, in partnership with KitchenAid , here’s what I’m making instead using their quiet Semi Automatic Espresso Machine. #Kitchenaid #madewithkitchenaid #coffee #recipe Ingredients 1½ tbsp olive oil 20g butter 200g Swiss Brown mushrooms, sliced Sea salt and pepper, to season 2 garlic cloves, chopped 40ml espresso coffee 2 tbsp cream 2 eggs 2 thick slices sour dough, toasted 2 tbsp grated parmesan cheese Chopped chives, to garnish Method Heat 1 tbsp of the oil and butter in a large frying pan on medium high heat. Add mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally for 5 minutes, until starting to brown. Season with salt and pepper. Add garlic, cook for a further minute, stirring. Pour in coffee, bring to a boil, cook until reduced by half. Add cream, cook for a further 2 minutes until thickened slightly. Heat remaining oil in a frying pan over medium heat and fry eggs for 2-3 minutes, until whites are set. Serve mushrooms on buttered toast, sprinkled with chives, topped with an egg and parmesan cheese.

Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe. The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Jacques Lacan Explained — Language, Desire & the Three Realms | An Easy-to-Follow Deep Dive Jacques Lacan is notorious for prose that reads like a hall of mirrors, yet his ideas still power everything from film theory to cultural studies. In this video we translate the density into crystal-clear concepts you can actually use. What you’ll learn Lacan’s “Return to Freud” – why drives ≠ instincts and how mistranslation hid Freud’s radical insights. Language & the Split Subject – signifier chains, anchoring points, and the famous “I is another.” Imaginary | Symbolic | Real – mirror-stage ego, law of the Father, and the traumatic kernel that resists words. Need → Demand → Desire – why every cry for milk masks a plea for love. Phallus, Castration, Objet a, Jouissance – decoded without jargon fog. How Lacanian analysis works – transference, interpretation, variable-length sessions. Finding Your Footing in Chaos: Nishida Kitaro on Place, Nothingness & Contradictory Unity Why does the 21-st-century onslaught of news, opinions and social media feel so disorienting—and what can a Zen-trained philosopher from a century ago teach us about regaining balance? In this deep-dive we explore the groundbreaking thought of Nishida Kitaro (1870-1945)—Japan’s first globally influential philosopher. Drawing on both Western giants like Kant and Hegel and Eastern wisdom traditions such as Zen Buddhism, Nishida forged a radical vision of: Bashō (Place) – the non-objective field that makes experience possible. Absolute Nothingness – a generative “fertile void,” not mere absence. Contradictory Unity – why opposites must coexist and energize reality. Acting Intuition – knowing through embodied action (think driving a car). Historical World & Production – how individuals and society co-create one another. Religious Self-Awareness – finding true identity through self-negation. A “World of Worlds” – Nishida’s alternative to cultural domination in global politics. Whether you’re tackling information overload, searching for philosophical bedrock, or just curious about cross-cultural thought, Nishida’s ideas offer fresh frameworks for understanding—and acting in—our contradictory world. 📝 Sources include primary texts, recent scholarship, and comparative studies across Buddhist and Christian traditions. 👍 If you find value here, please like, comment, and subscribe for more philosophy deep dives! 00:00 – Intro: Navigating a world of clashing truths 01:05 – Who was Nishida Kitaro? Critics are demanding boxer Imane Khelif is stripped of her Olympic gold medal after a leaked medical report appeared to confirm the female boxing champion is a biological man. Meanwhile, 16-year-old student athlete AB Hernandez, who is biologically male, tied for first place in the high jump and triple jump at the track-and-field Championships in California. President Trump’s executive order to ban transgender athletes in women’s sport felt like a full stop on a long and exhausting debate, with a number of major sporting bodies all over the world using the move to announce their own bans. The IDF has fiercely denied Hamas reports that its forces opened fire on crowds of Palestinians as they made their way to an aid centre in southern Gaza. What neither side can deny at this point is that the scale of death and suffering is intolerable. Jewish people have been very recently killed in hate-fuelled attacks in the US - and it goes without saying that the mass killing of innocent Palestinians by Netanyahu’s forces is doing nothing but grave harm to the Israeli cause.
