Een muurschildering maken in de straat waar je bent opgegroeid. Voor Lucy Beukeboom (18) is het een droom die uitkomt. Samen met Layla Rademaker (18) maakte ze er haar profielwerkstuk van. Het schilderij op de Admiraal de Ruyterweg is een nagedachtenis aan de moord op Lisa, nu bijna een jaar geleden: "Het is belachelijk dat vrouwen nog niet veilig over straat kunnen fietsen." De steigers staan er nog. Lucy en Layla leggen de laatste hand aan de muurschildering. Het is het einde van een project dat bijna een jaar geleden begon. Het profielwerkstuk waar ze toen aan begonnen is allang ingeleverd; dat ging over de vraag hoe je zo'n initiatief kan realiseren. Omdat je van verschillende kanten toestemming moet krijgen, bleek dat lastiger dan gedacht. Daar werden ze van tevoren al voor gewaarschuwd, vertelt Lucy. "We kregen een mailtje van iemand van de gemeente met meerdere punten waarom het niet mogelijk was om een muurschildering te maken, maar dat mailtje hebben we gedeletet." "We hoorden van mensen die ook buiten Amsterdam muurschilderingen maakten, dat je hier beter niet aan zo'n project kunt beginnen. Want het duurt drie jaar om het te regelen. We hebben het expres genegeerd en zijn gewoon doorgegaan." Inmiddels hebben de meiden hun gelijk gekregen. De benodigde subsidie, de toestemming van het stadscuratorium, groen licht van de VvE, het regelen van een betaalbare steiger: het is allemaal gelukt. Voorbeeld Ze zijn trots op het resultaat. De beschilderde muur is op een steenworp afstand van het huis waar Lucy al sinds haar zesde woont. "We hadden gezien dat deze muur lelijk en leeg was." Het onderwerp voor het schilderij bedachten ze vlak na de moord op de 17-jarige Lisa uit Abcoude. Dat maakte veel indruk op de twee, die op dat moment ook 17 waren. "Met het schilderij willen ze uitdragen dat iedere vrouw 's nachts veilig over straat zou moeten kunnen fietsen", zegt Layla. "De vrouw die we hier afbeelden, draagt de maan zelfverzekerd met zich mee. Tear gas was basically nothing unusual in Kosovo’s parliament between 2015 and 2018. The opposition used it as a means of protest to prevent or block various government decisions. At the time, the current Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, was the leader of the left-wing opposition party Vetëvendosje. He was considered one of the key figures responsible for the tear gas incidents. Fast forward to 2021: Vetëvendosje won nearly 48% of the vote in a snap election. Kurti moved from the opposition into government and became Prime Minister of Kosovo. This particular tear gas attack back in 2018 was aimed at preventing a vote on the border agreement between Kosovo and Montenegro. On that day, tear gas was released twice inside parliament. As a result, the session was interrupted and lawmakers had to leave the chamber both times. Despite the chaos, the border agreement was ultimately adopted because it secured the required two-thirds majority. This also cleared the way for visa-free travel to the Schengen Area for Kosovo citizens. Several EU politicians later criticised the incident on social media. They made it clear that such behaviour has no place in a democracy. Many technologies have something called an adoption S-curve. Basically, we invent something, we get really excited about it and the media reinforce a public opinion how that something will change the world in a matter of a few years. In reality the process takes much longer. Right now, when it comes to EVs we are somewhere between the Early Adopters and The Early Majority. This is something that organizational theorist Geoffrey Moore calls the chasm. This sub-transition can be particularly difficult to achieve. We started with regular hybrids, evolved to plug in hybrids and the next stage will be range-extended electric vehicles. Each of these stages gradually exposes buyers bit by bit to the lifestyle changes necessary to make use of a new technology. Remember, real gains came only after society reorganised around the technology. Range extended EVs are great because they provide owners with the economy and silence of an EV but also have a backup plan. No matter how many times we are told that 90% of our daily driving is less than 60km or whatever we also know that 10% of our driving is above that. And because we humans are subjective emotional beings those 10% can be more important than the 90% percent. A time will come when I will unexpectedly need to be somewhere important for me at a certain time. And if I can’t because I needed to charge my car for whatever amount of time I will hate my car and will think about replacing it regardless of how many times it served me well before that. The exception can be just as or in even more important than the average use case scenario. Here are four cars. Of these four cars only 1 is a true range extended vehicle. The Chevrolet Volt is not a true range extended car because most of it’s range comes from the gasoline engine and tank. Something else that disqualifies it is the fact that it had a clutch which could connect the engine to the wheels on the highway. The Volt is therefore a series-parallel plug in hybrid than range extended ev. The Mazda mx-30 R-EV uses a 830cc single rotor 74 horsepower naturally aspirated wankel engine to charge the batteries. The engine is never connected to the wheels but the majority of this car’s range comes from the combustion engine and large gasoline tank. However the battery can be charged from the grid. Thus it is a series plug in-hybrid. The Nissan Qashqai E-power also isn’t a range extended EV. The engine is never connected to the wheels but it does run most of the time. We have a tiny battery which is almost constantly charged by the engine. The battery can never be charged from the grid and thus the electric only range is minimal. This makes the Nissan E-power a series non-plug in hybrid. This leaves us with the BMW i3 rex. It’’s a car using a 650cc 2 cylinder kymco made engine out of a bmw maxi scooter. The engine has no mechanical connection with the wheels. Over the years the range and the size of the battery pack increased but electric only always accounted for the majority of the total range. The small petrol engine and tank were meant only as a sort of backup to charge the battery when an unexpected scenario occurs. However, the bmw i3 rex cannot be considered a sales success. In the beginning it accounted for a majority of the sales of the i3 but later as battery capacity increased its sales plummeted before it eventually became discontinued before the bev i3. Observing this trend one might argue that range extended vehicles are stupid and that we should focus on improving and maximizing battery tech instead of wasting precious vehicle space on small combustion engines and gas tanks. Yes, that argument made sense 10 years ago when we were in the early stages of modern battery tech and battery capacities were growing rapidly leading many people to predict that battery energy density growth will continue at the same rate. In reality it did not and nowadays we see realistic annual improvements of 5-8% in battery capacities. To make an EV super versatile all you need is a piston and a linear generator. Attach magnets and have them move back and forth past copper coils and you are making electricity without a crank, rods, or a giant heavy engine block. Volgens de Deense auteur Emma Holten zit daar een enorme blinde vlek. Zij betoogt dat we de rol van verzorgers moeten erkennen om een grotere (zorg)crisis te vermijden. De economische orde is grotendeels bedacht door mannen die schreven over markten, eigendom en productie. Die theorieën hadden echter nooit kunnen bestaan zonder de zorg van anderen, vaak vrouwen, die die bedenkers ontvingen. Filosofen zoals Adam Smith, Thomas Hobbes en John Locke legden de fundamenten van hoe wij vandaag de dag nog altijd naar de economie, arbeid en vooruitgang kijken. De economie wordt gezien door de lens van wat geld oplevert. Zorg wordt gezien als een kostenpost. Adam Smith? Die woonde het grootste gedeelte van zijn leven bij z'n moeder. Niet één keer werd ze genoemd in de toch dikke klassieker The Wealth of Nations. Volgens Emma Holten is dit narratief een enorme blinde vlek in onze samenleving. Zo stelt zij dat zorg en degenen die het op zich nemen, juist noodzakelijk zijn voor alle economische activiteiten. De moeder die kinderen opvoedt. De dochter die voor haar ouders zorgt. Zonder zorg geen werknemers. Zonder opvoeding geen productiviteit. Zonder lichamen die kunnen herstellen, valt er überhaupt niets te produceren. Alles in de geboortestad van de schrijfster, Kopenhagen, oogt efficiënt, welvarend en zorgvuldig ontworpen, en Denemarken behoort al jaren tot de rijkste landen ter wereld. En toch vertellen verschillende cijfers een ander verhaal. Burn-outs nemen toe. Steeds meer mensen kampen met stress en mentale klachten. Een samenleving kan blijkbaar rijker worden, zonder zich per se beter te voelen. We bewonderen economische groei zolang alles blijft draaien. The main title is missing, but it is believed to be titled "Fishing the Grand Banks". This footage in the film predates 1927, as it features the schooner Columbia which was lost in that year. Columbia was originally launched in 1923, and was designed by William Starling Burgess. Built for speed and seaworthiness, she participated in the International Fishermen’s Trophy, coming close to defeating the famous Canadian schooner Bluenose. Columbia was known for her racing prowess but met a tragic end in 1927, sinking near Sable Island during a hurricane, with all 22 crew members tragically lost. The film starts at 0:00 with shots of fishing boats being built and then shows the fishing vessel Columbia being readied for a trip. Starting at 1:50, it follows the Columbia as it sails from Gloucester to the Grand Banks, and returns with over 300,000 pounds of fish. Starting at 6:50, the film shows the path that fish take to market. First they are packed in ice and the cod, at 7:45, is shown being salted. At 10:00, men and women in a fish processing center or canning factory are shown deboning and processing fish. At 11:00, the fish are canned and placed in boxes. At 11:41, the Columbia once again sets out to sea -- but is lost. At 13:14, annual memorial service is held in Gloucester for lost fishermen. "They That Go Down to the Sea in Ships 1623-1923" reads the inscription on the famous monument. This is the Gloucester Fisherman's Memorial (also known as: "Man at the Wheel" statue or "Fishermen's Memorial Cenotaph") near the entrance of Stacy Esplanade in Gloucester, Massachusetts, erected in 1925. Launched in 1955, Operation Deep Freeze marked the beginning of sustained U.S. involvement in Antarctic exploration and scientific research, laying the foundation for long-term presence under the Antarctic Treaty System. The operations continue today, with modern missions still supporting U.S. research stations. Het WK hockey is van start gegaan en Nederland is, samen met België gastland. De komende twee weken is het Wagener Stadion in het Amsterdamse Bos de Nederlandse speellocatie. Om 10.00 uur werd het toernooi geopend door de dames van Australië en Japan. Niet voor lege tribunes, want al flink wat bezoekers hadden de weg naar het stadion gevonden. Vele oranje shirtjes waren al te ontdekken, maar ook het geel van Australië was te zien. "We hebben gisteravond onze kaarten gekocht op het laatste moment.", vertelt een Australisch koppel. "Het is leuk om andere Australiërs hier te zien." De oranjefans zaten al op de tribune, terwijl de Nederlandse dames pas om 16.00 uur in actie kwamen tegen Chili. Uiteindelijk eindigde dat in een ..-zege voor Oranje. De supporters kwamen bewust vroeg. "Ja, lekker op tijd noem je dat", vertelt een vrouw. "Heerlijk, we willen de andere wedstrijden ook even zien." Ook een groepje meiden is al op tijd aanwezig. "Ja, het is leuk want we zitten zelf ook allemaal op hockey en leuk om je idolen in het echt te zien." Het doet toernooidirecteur Victor Brouwer goed dat de tribunes zich ook in de ochtend al vullen. "Vandaag zijn de dames en daar is het publiek vooral heel trouw", weet hij. "Er zijn veel jonge kinderen en wij vinden het fijn als er heel veel meisjes komen, want die kunnen ontzettend veel herrie maken en daar lijkt het alleen maar voller van." Hangende bladeren, gele grasvelden en uitgedroogde poelen. De Amsterdamse flora en fauna piept en kraakt onder de aanhoudende droogte van de afgelopen weken. Volgens stadsecoloog Geert Timmermans is dat nu nog geen reden tot grote zorg, maar wel een voorbode van wat komen gaat: "Het leven gaat zich aanpassen." Ook weinig last van muggen deze zomer? Dat kan heel goed kloppen, zegt stadsecoloog Geert Timmermans. Met zijn gympen aan stapt hij in park Frankendael in Oost een drooggevallen poel in. "In deze poel heeft altijd water gestaan. Deze zomer is de poel helemaal drooggevallen. Amfibieën als padden en salamanders hebben er eigenlijk niet zoveel last van want die planten zich alleen in het voorjaar voor. Maar stel dat hier tiendoornige stekelbaarsjes zouden zitten, die gaan gewoon kapot." Maar waar de poelen, of andere plekken met stilstaand water, uitdrogen, zijn ook minder muggen. "Ik slaap meestal met een klamboe, maar dit jaar is dat nog niet nodig geweest." Maar dat er nu minder muggen zijn is natuurlijk helemaal niet goed, zegt Timmermans. "Gierzwaluwen bijvoorbeeld of vleermuizen leven onder meer van muggen. Als het met de insecten slecht gaat, gaat het vaak ook met die beesten en vogels wat slechter." Het is niet zo dat al het leven in Park Frankendael is verdwenen. We zien bijen, horzels en vlinders. De bomen, bloemen en planten hebben er wel eens frisser uitgezien, maar zijn niet compleet uitgedroogd. Volgens Timmermans is het nu vooral zaak om hier niet te gaan maaien. "Als je gaat maaien in een hele droge periode is dat funest voor de insectenwereld. Dan verdwijnen de bloemen, waardoor insecten die stuifmeel of nectar zoeken geen voedsel meer vinden. En als de grassen weg zijn kunnen vlinders geen eitjes meer afzetten en rupsen dus ook geen voedsel meer kunnen vinden." Grote zorgen maakt Timmermans zich nu nog niet. "Leven zal er altijd zijn. Een keer een droge zomer is niet meteen heel erg, maar de verwachting is dat dit veel vaker gaat gebeuren. Na een paar hele droge zomers achterelkaar gaan bomen uiteindelijk toch dood omdat ze te weinig water krijgen en ook vatbaarder worden voor ziekten. Denk aan beuken of berken, die hebben daar ongelooflijk veel last van, die hebben gewoon regenbuien nodig. Hier in Amsterdam valt het trouwens nog wel mee vanwege de vrij hoge grondwaterstand. Maar als we structureel droge zomers krijgen, krijgen we gewoon een heel andere beplanting. If you’re from the EU and want to travel to Kosovo, entering the country is pretty straightforward: you can travel to Kosovo visa-free and just need a valid passport.
