We take our liberties for granted. They seem absolute and untouchable. But they are the result of a series of violent struggles fought over 800 years that, at times, have threatened to tear our society apart. On the frontline was a document originally inked on animal skin - Magna Carta. Historian David Starkey looks at the origins of the Great Charter, created in 1215 to check the abuses of King John - and how it nearly died at birth. He explores its subsequent deployment, its contribution to making everyone - even the monarch - subject to the rule of law, and how this quintessentially English document migrated to the North American colonies and eventually became the foundation of the US constitution. Magna Carta has become a universal symbol of individual freedom against the tyranny of the state, but with ever-tightening government control on our lives, is it time to resurrect it? Diddy is back in court for the eighth day of his federal sex trafficking trial and the stream of incendiary claims is not slowing down. Yesterday the court heard from Cassie Ventura’s mother, who said the mogul forced her to pay 20 thousand dollars for money he’d spent on the relationship. Plus, a male escort known as 'The Punisher' described how Diddy disguised himself to enter sex parties - and he joins Piers Morgan now. Also, Sonstar Peterson - father of Tory Lanez, the man behind bars for the shooting Megan Thee Stallion - speaks to Piers about his son’s sentence and the recent attack he endured in jail. He’s “convinced” his son is innocent, stating a lot of evidence has been suppressed over the years by “so much foul play” and “stinks of a cover-up”. Republican Anna Paulina Luna also joins to discuss why she also thinks Tory should be freed. The bombardment is “wholly disproportionate”, the civilian death toll and suffering is “intolerable” and the denial of aid is “unacceptable.” These are not the words of democratic leaders about Putin’s war on Ukraine but those of the UK, France and Canada about Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza. And now President Trump says it’s time for Netanyahu to “wrap it up.” Israel is allowing some aid to trickle into Gaza after an 11-week blockade but aid workers say it’s a drop in the ocean and the US president has acknowledged that “a lot of people in Gaza are starving.” Are we seeing a genocide? We can now functionally cure sickle cell disease. Here’s how… If you have a mutation in a gene for a protein called hemoglobin, it can turn red blood cells hard and sticky, so they clump together and cause people a lot of pain. The most effective treatment until now has been to give patients other people’s cells that produce healthy hemoglobin. But it wears off. But NOW, doctors can edit the patient's OWN DNA to get them to produce hemoglobin on their own! This is incredible. If you want to know what else we’re already using DNA editing for, subscribe! #stem #science #tech #medicine #crispr

Introduced by the L.S. Brach Manufacturing Corporation of Newark, New Jersey in the mid-1920s, the Vis-o-Glow was one of dozens of different devices designed to protect radio antennas and other sensitive electronic devices from lightning strikes and other overvoltage surges. Elizabeth and Jeff were best friends. They did everything together, from early-morning runs to late-night karaoke sessions. They came up with secret code names for each other and went on undercover missions in their neighborhood. They fought, and made up, and fought some more. Beneath their playful dynamic, an attraction was growing between them, but Elizabeth never wanted to risk the friendship by exploring it. Then Jeff got sick, and things changed. Navigating Ethical Gray Zones – Gene Editing, Corporate Morality & Wealth Gaps IB Philosophy Ethics theme Applied Ethics The world keeps changing faster than our gut-level sense of right and wrong. In this crash-course on applied ethics, we take the grand theories of morality off the bookshelf and put them to work on three of today’s sharpest dilemmas: Biomedical Ethics – CRISPR, cloning, stem-cell research, euthanasia. How far should we push the frontiers of life and who gets to decide? Business Ethics – Fair trade, supply-chain labor, corporate espionage. Can profit and principle ever be true partners? Wealth Distribution – Runaway inequality, taxation, charitable duty. Where’s the line between reward and injustice? Along the way we test each issue against utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics, and draw fresh insight from thinkers like John Stuart Mill, Immanuel Kant, Confucius, Charles Taylor, Frantz Fanon, and Friedrich Nietzsche. Stay to the end for reflection questions you can bring to the classroom, the boardroom, or your next dinner debate. 00:00 – Intro: Ethics in overdrive 00:46 – What is “applied ethics”? How Should We Live? | Virtue Ethics, Deontology & Consequentialism Explained IB Philosophy Ethics theme Normative Ethics What really makes a life “good”? In this deep-dive we unpack the three powerhouse traditions of normative ethics and see how each answers that timeless question: Virtue Ethics – from Aristotle’s eudaimonia to Confucius’ “superior person,” character is king. Deontology – Kant’s categorical imperative and the pull of duty (plus a nod to divine-command theory). Consequentialism – utilitarian “greatest good,” act vs rule approaches, and even ancient Mohist thought. Along the way we test how these frameworks overlap, clash, and illuminate real-world issues—giving you a practical toolkit for judging right and wrong. Which lens resonates most with you? Share your take in the comments and keep the ethical conversation rolling! 00:00 – Opening: Why the “good life” question matters 00:50 – The Big Three frameworks at a glance 01:04 – Virtue Ethics 101: character over rules 02:40 – Aristotle, Confucius & modern revivals (MacIntyre, Anscombe) 03:18 – Do some virtues outrank others? Meta-Ethics Unpacked: Where Do Moral Values Come From? IB Philosophy Ethics theme Meta Ethics Step back from everyday rights and wrongs and ask the bigger questions: What do “good” and “bad” even mean? Are moral truths out there waiting to be discovered, or do we invent them? In this episode we map the territory of meta-ethics, drawing on voices as varied as: Friedrich Nietzsche – morality as a creation of power and resentment Confucius – virtue and social harmony through ritual and role Charles Taylor – authenticity within shared “horizons of significance” Frantz Fanon – colonialism’s deep imprint on self-worth and value A. J. Ayer – emotivism: ethical claims as expressions of feeling We test universality vs relativism, ask if morality extends beyond humans, and compare foundations in reason, emotion, natural law, and ecology. By the end you’ll have a clearer map—and new questions—to navigate the moral maze of the 21st century. 00:00 – Intro: why meta-ethics matters 00:22 – Zooming out: core questions (origin, objectivity, scope) 01:38 – Nietzsche’s Genealogy: morality & power dynamics 02:55 – Confucius: virtue, ritual, social roles 04:08 – Charles Taylor: the ethics of authenticity 05:46 – Fanon: colonialism, identity & internalized values 06:48 – A. In this interview with KJ Noh, we dive deep into the history and trauma of Korea's decades-long scandal of abusive international adoption practices. Authorities say more than 200,000 South Korean children have been adopted overseas since the 1950s. Many of those adopted children have accused agencies of coercion and deception, including in some cases forcibly removing them from their mothers. This video is dedicated to all those who are working to advocate for and assist South Korean adoptees whose human rights have been violated. What Is Art? — Power, Purpose & the Moving Boundary Between Art and Everything Else IB Philosophy - Aesthetics theme - Nature of art From Plato’s philosopher-censors to today’s culture wars, the question “What counts as art?” never stops shifting. In this episode we braid insights from Nietzsche, Fanon, Taylor, Confucius and more to show how power, purpose and context continually redraw the line between art and “not-art.” 🔍 Key threads we follow: Gatekeepers & Power – How elites (from ancient nobles to modern critics) declare what is “good” art. Art with a Mission vs. Art for Art’s Sake – Confucian virtue, Plato’s moral state, and Nietzsche’s aesthetic escape hatch. Context Is King – Why a play, painting or meme can flip meanings across time, place or audience. The Myth of Neutrality – Even the purest self-expression leaks values and ideology. Your Turn – If meaning keeps moving, what rules (if any) should guide creators and critics today? Listen in, then test your own definitions: would that piece you love still feel like “art” in another gallery—or another century? 🎧🎨 0:00 – Intro & roadmap: why defining art is so slippery 1:18 – Nietzsche: power decides what gets called “good” 2:23 – Fanon: mastering the coloniser’s language for artistic acceptance 3:18 – Plato’s Republic: state-run art and the ultimate gatekeepers 4:07 – Purpose or purity? (Spoiler: probably not) 10:42 – Fanon’s politics of recognition & creative expression 11:24 – Plato revisited: censorship, stability and moral engineering 12:07 – Big take-aways: art, power and the never-fixed boundary 13:09 – Reflection prompt: how would a change of context alter your favourite artwork?
Who Gets to Be an Artist? — Power, Technology & the Ever-Shifting Meaning of Art IB Philosophy - Aesthetics theme - The Artist The label “artist” looks simple—until you try to pin it down. In this conversation we weave together ideas from Fanon, Taylor, Nietzsche, Confucius, Plato, and Mill to explore how power, culture, and new technology continually reshape both art itself and the people allowed to claim the title “artist.” We tackle questions such as: Is “the artist” a universal human role or a Western invention? How do tech and global media liberate creativity while fragmenting shared meaning? Are artists mirrors, agitators, or outsiders—and who decides? Where should we draw the line between artistic freedom and social responsibility? Listen in for a fast-moving dive that spans courtly “honourable strangers,” digital platforms, colonial language politics, and the timeless tug-of-war between self-expression and public norms. Stick around to ponder our closing challenge: what duties, if any, does the 21st-century artist owe their audience? 0:00 – Opening: Why “artist” keeps changing 0:46 – Today’s big questions & roadmap 1:16 – Fanon: outsiders and the flexible artist role 2:00 – Taylor: Western authenticity & the “unique voice” ideal 2:55 – Nietzsche: Power decides what counts as “good” art 3:38 – Poiesis: creation as a basic human act 4:20 – Confucius & the “polite arts”: virtue as artistry 5:02 – Losing shared symbols, gaining new artistic languages 5:55 – Technology’s double edge: fragmentation vs. connection 6:48 – Artist vs. society: mirrors, agitators, outsiders 7:40 – Plato & Mill: censorship, public opinion, and harm 8:36 – Art vs. craft & the politics of naming 9:15 – Global media and blurred boundaries of art 10:00 – Responsibilities, resentment, and the freedom tightrope 10:26 – Wrap-up & your turn: What should define the artist today?
