Voor Frontlinie reist Bram Vermeulen af naar Zuid-Libanon, waar sinds het uitbreken van de oorlog tussen Israël en Hezbollah meerdere collega-journalisten zijn omgekomen bij doelgerichte Israëlische aanvallen. Wie waren zij? En waarom werden ze vermoord? Lokale en internationale journalisten doen verslag van het conflict tussen Israël en Hezbollah, maar worden zelf ook doelwit. Sinds oktober 2023 zijn volgens het Committee to Protect Journalists in de regio al 260 journalisten vermoord door het Israëlische leger. Het merendeel kwam om het leven in Gaza, zestien van hen in Libanon. Ze werkten voor Libanese media maar ook voor grote internationale media als Reuters en Al Jazeera. Ondanks afspraken over een staakt-het-vuren bestookt het Israëlische leger grote delen van buurland Libanon om de door Iran gesteunde beweging Hezbollah te bestrijden, die vanuit daar het noorden van Israël aanvalt. De Israëlische regering heeft het leger ook opdracht gegeven om het land ten zuiden van de Litani rivier en andere delen van Libanon te bezetten. Bram Vermeulen bezoekt de huidige frontlinie in de Zuid-Libanese stad Tyrus. De buitenwijken worden dagelijks vanuit Israël beschoten; Hezbollah vuurt vanuit wijken aan de baai terug. Journalisten doen verslag van die strijd vanaf het terras van een hotel waar ze zich veilig wanen. Ze vertellen over hoe een soortgelijke livepositie eerder onder vuur kwam en aan twee collega’s het leven kostte. Ook bezoekt Bram een twintigjarige Libanese fotograaf in het ziekenhuis. Zij overleefde een tweevoudige Israëlische raketaanval en vertelt hoe zij en haar vrouwelijke collega drie uur lang hebben gesmeekt om hulp van het Libanese leger, de Verenigde Naties en hulpverleners. Die kregen van Israël geen toestemming voor een reddingsactie. De tweede raket legde uiteindelijk het gebouw waarin ze schuilden in puin. Haar collega overleefde deze zogenoemde double tap-aanval niet. ‘Dit is een aanval op de waarheid’, zegt de jonge fotograaf. Daarnaast spreekt Bram met twee journalisten van grote internationale media die vertellen over de terughoudendheid op redacties bij het brengen van verhalen over deze oorlog. Een van hen was aanwezig toen in oktober 2023 een Libanese cameraman van Reuters werd gedood. Een collega van persbureau AFP verloor haar been. "Ik raakte volledig in de stress", vertelt acteur Daan Buringa (bekend van Joe Speedboot) over afgelopen woensdagavond. Toen hij na een avondje in café-restaurant de Vergulden Eenhoorn naar huis wilde gaan, bleek zijn op maat gemaakte handfiets te zijn gestolen. "Alles wat ik de komende maanden wil doen zag ik in een flits voorbij gaan." We spreken Buringa, die in Watergraafsmeer woont, onderweg naar zijn sportschool aan het Olympiaplein in Zuid. Normaal gesproken een ritje van 20 minuten, maar nu doet hij er twee keer zo lang over. Dat komt dus omdat hij voorlopig niet kan beschikken over zijn handbike, een fiets die hij aan zijn rolstoel kan koppelen. Buringa heeft een progressieve spierziekte, een hele zeldzame, die ataxie van Friedreich heet. Bij een operatie die hij daarvoor moest ondergaan, kreeg hij een dwarslaesie, waardoor hij niet meer kan lopen. Volle agenda Buringa beleeft momenteel veel succes als acteur in de film Stand Up. De film ging afgelopen juni in première in New York en wordt aankomende november in de Nederlandse bioscopen verwacht. Door die handbike kon Buringa zijn acteerwerk makkelijker combineren met andere werkzaamheden. Hij schrijft namelijk ook scenario's en heeft sinds kort een wekelijkse column in Het Parool. En ook als hij met vrienden afspreekt of wanneer hij op vakantie gaat, gaat de handbike mee. Maar zonder handbike is de weg naar de sportschool al een hele beproeving. Een bus in- en uitgaan gaat eigenlijk niet zonder hulp van een buschauffeur of conducteur. Die helpen hem overigens altijd graag, zegt Buringa: "De mensen zijn bereid te helpen, dus dat is wel fijn. Alleen in de nacht is het vervelend. Dan sta ik er wel eens alleen voor." Op maat gemaakt Het idee dat iemand de handbike gestolen heeft, gaat er bij Buringa nog moeilijk in. "Die fietsen zijn op maat gemaakt, dus ik ben de enige die er iets aan heeft." Dat die fietsen op maat gemaakt zijn, zorgt er ook voor dat het lang duurt voordat hij een nieuwe kan krijgen. Buringa verwacht dat hij tot de kerst moet wachten. Hij heeft ook aangifte van diefstal gedaan bij de politie, maar hij verwacht niet dat die fiets nog boven water komt. Its revolutionary air-independent steam engine could operate without relying on outside air, allowing the submarine to generate steam and propel itself while completely submerged. Working with Antoni Roca Rosell, Professor of History of Science and Technology at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, we rebuilt this entire 19th century submarine in 3D to reveal its design, construction, and operation in unprecedented detail, and to show how Monturiol tackled some of the fundamental challenges of early submarine engineering, from maintaining breathable air underwater to generating steam without a conventional fire supplied by atmospheric oxygen.
