Summer arrives just over a month from now, and along with your last-minute scramble for a house share or a part-time job scooping ice cream, you’re probably also wondering what to read. On this week’s episode, Gilbert Cruz talks with Joumana Khatib about some of the books they're most looking forward to, from a James Baldwin biography to the true-life story of a young couple shipwrecked in the Pacific and a political thriller co-written by James Patterson and Bill Clinton. Books discussed: “The Beast in the Clouds: The Roosevelt Brothers’ Deadly Quest to Find the Mythical Giant Panda,” by Nathalia Holt “Atmosphere: A Love Story,” by Taylor Jenkins Reid “The Gunfighters: How Texas Made the West Wild,” by Bryan Burrough “Next to Heaven," by James Frey “A Marriage at Sea: A True Story of Love, Obsession, and Shipwreck,” by Sophie Elmhirst “The Sisters,” by Jonas Hassen Khemiri “The First Gentleman,” by Bill Clinton and James Patterson “King of Ashes,” by S.A. Cosby “Bonding," by Mariel Franklin “Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil,” by V.E. Schwab “Katabasis,” by R.F. Kuang “Baldwin: A Love Story,” by Nicholas Boggs Subscribe today at nytimes.com/podcasts (http://nytimes.com/podcasts) or on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Watch the full interviews with Dr. Christof Koch and Professor Michael Levin, which are discussed in this video, here: https://youtu.be/uFMLpZkkH_8 https://youtu.be/1V-5t0ZPY7E Hans Busstra talks to Dr. Bernardo Kastrup about the groundbreaking work of Professor Michael Levin and Dr. Christof Koch. Levin’s research into bio-electric fields reveals that cellular networks use electrical signals not just for immediate physiological tasks, but to coordinate complex patterning and memory across tissues—suggesting a kind of distributed intelligence in living systems. Christof Koch, meanwhile, champions Integrated Information Theory (IIT), which proposes that consciousness is an intrinsic property of certain physical systems with high levels of causal interconnectivity. Both lines of inquiry challenge the traditional reductionist view that mind is merely an emergent byproduct of neural activity. Instead, they point to a more holistic, perhaps even fundamental, role for information and consciousness in nature. Though Levin and Koch make no explicit metaphysical claims in their work, their empirical findings and views are very much in line with analytic idealism. For a more in depth analysis of IIT by Bernardo Kastrup: https://www.essentiafoundation.org/in-defense-of-integrated-information-theory-iit/reading/ 0:00 Introduction On Michael Levin's work on bio-electric fields 2:49 What fascinates Bernardo about Michael Levin's work 4:34 Flatworms regenerate in ways not encoded in DNA 5:54 How do cells know how to grow organs? The Met Gala is one of the most glittering events in the fashion elite's calendars - and along with the show-stopping and at times rather ridiculous outfits, there were the usual gigantic egos that could put even Piers Morgan's to shame. Piers debates whether the event is as worthy as it makes out to be with YouTubers Nerdrotic and Critical Drinker as well as Uncensored contributors Esther Krakue and Ernest Owens, before being joined by actor Zachary Levi to discuss how President Donald Trump's film tariffs plan will affect Hollywood. Ever wondered why your wine smells like lychee, rose, or even grape jelly? In this second video with Sietze Wijma, a sensory scientist from The Art of Tasting, we delve into the fascinating world of wine aroma compounds, exploring how terpenes and esters contribute to the complex scents we associate with different wines. See more of Sietze's work here https://artoftasting.nl/ In this video we examine: Terpenes like geraniol and linalool, responsible for floral notes such as rose and lavender. Esters like ethyl hexanoate, which impart fruity aromas reminiscent of apples and bananas. The role of methyl anthranilate in giving certain wines a distinctive grape-like scent. Understanding these compounds enhances our appreciation of wine and sharpens our tasting skills. Join me as we explore the chemistry behind the bouquet. # Flavour Compound 1 Green bell pepper - 3-isobutyl-2-methoxypyrazine 2 Elderflower - 4-MMP 3 Bergamot - linalool 4 Lychee - rose oxide 5 Grape jelly - Methyl anthranilate 6 Red apple - ethyl hexanoate 7 Butter - diacetyl 8 Vanilla - vanillin 9 Clove - eugenol 10 Petrol - TDN This is part two of three, part three will be released in the coming weeks. In the first half of the 20th century, most automatic fire alarms were heat-activated. Starting in the 1950s, however, more sensitive smoke detectors were introduced, working on one of two detection principles: photoelectric and ionization. Tech & Knowing: 7 Big Questions That Are Re-Wiring Our Minds TOK - Knowledge and Technology - Scope From Gutenberg’s press to DNA time-capsules, from search engines that remember for us to AI that “knows” without awareness—technology isn’t just storing facts, it’s rewriting what it means to know. In this deep dive we tackle seven provocatively simple questions that reveal a very complicated relationship between knowledge and the tools that shape it: Collective Memory & Preservation – How did the printing press, the Internet Archive, and even DNA vaults change what survives? Data → Information → Knowledge – A single CO₂ reading is meaningless until tech adds context and action. The Google Effect – Outsourcing memory: convenient or corrosive? Can Machines Know? – AlphaFold predicts proteins—but does it understand them? Knowledge Outside the Brain – GPS and GitHub Copilot as cognitive exoskeletons. Insight by Rearrangement – From John Snow’s cholera map to modern knowledge graphs. Biggest Impact? – Storing more, knowing more, or changing how we know? Stay to the end for three practical tips on building tech fluency and critical reflection skills—so the tools amplify your mind instead of overruling it. 🔔 Subscribe for more deep dives on knowledge, AI, and learning. 👍 Like the video if it made you rethink “knowing.” 💬 Comment: Which tech tool has most changed your learning habits? #Technology #Knowledge #AI #EdTech #DigitalLiteracy Timestamps 0:00 – Why tech vs. knowledge matters 0:55 – Q1: Tech & Collective Memory (printing press → DNA archives) 3:14 – Q2: Data vs. Information vs. Knowledge (the CO₂ example) 5:08 – Q3: The Internet & “The Google Effect” on memory 7:24 – Q4: Can a Machine Know? A Small Steam Pump That Does Not Work - Part #2. This pump has a few problems, the main one being that it will not run. I would guess that many of the nuts & bolts have been overtightened and have physically distorted the Brass parts. This is evident by the fact that one of the main 4BA Nuts that holds the Cylinder assembly together has completely stripped. The question "is it worth repairing?" or is there an unorthodox quick fix? https://www.patreon.com/keithappleton IF YOU ENJOY WATCHING THESE DETAILED TUTORIAL VIDEOS THAT I PRODUCE TO HELP BEGINNERS TO THE HOBBY, THEN PLEASE BECOME A PATRON OF MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL VIA "PATREON" AND ALLOW ME THE TIME TO MAKE EVEN MORE OF THESE SPECIALIST AND HIGHLY DETAILED TUTORIAL VIDEOS. Piers Morgan Uncensored brings two hard-hitting interviews in one, featuring two very different figures from American politics. First up is straight-talking Mayor of New York Eric Adams, who went from rising star of the Democrats to independent runner to keep his post - after being indicted on corruption charges and being effectively cleared without trial under orders from the Trump Administration. Next up is George Santos, the former Republican congressman who is still reeling from being sentenced to seven years and three months’ jail time for wire fraud and identity theft. In a prior appearance on Uncensored he admitted to being a “terrible liar” - so now he’s facing the consequences of his actions, is he remorseful? The fact that Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon on July 19, 1969, was also the success of Wernher von Braun and a team of more than 100 NASA technicians and engineers from Germany. But the success story is shrouded in dark shadows: Many of the Germans had a Nazi past and were part of the development of the infamous V2 rocket. Some 20,000 forced laborers lost their lives during the production under the inhumane working conditions at several Nazi underground weapons factories. In a secret operation to secure German rocket technology, the Americans brought the scientists to the USA in 1945. Only decades later were classified documents released, detailing the involvement of German NASA employees with the Third Reich. https://youtu.be/XM2e_9lfm90 -- Welcome to the official Get.factual youtube channel! 🌍 We are a documentary streaming channel covering history, science, technology, and nature. Daniel Susskind, Abby Innes, Richard Kibble, Will Hutton discuss the advantages and limits of the price mechanism. When it comes down to it, does price really have anything to do with value? With a free trial, you can watch the full debate NOW at https://iai.tv/video/the-price-of-everything-value-of-nothing?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description From fabulous houses to glamorous holidays, superyachts to personal helicopters, we often assume expensive things are the most desirable and the market accurately determines the true value of things. But others point to the truism that relationships are the most important factor in our lives, and love and friendship are free. From swimming in the sea to climbing a mountain, from carrying a child on our shoulders to sharing a sunset with a lover, price they argue is no guide to life. As Oscar Wilde remarked, "a fool is someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing". Price, as can be seen from tulips and bread, is a matter of fashion and availability than of underlying value. Should we conclude that price has nothing to do with value and give up the idea that the expensive is desirable? Should we construct an economy whereby the things that really matter have an equal footing with items that are currently highly-priced? Or is this a romantic illusion, and the price mechanism an extraordinarily powerful and effective means of assessing the value of everything? In collaboration with Deloitte. #economics #finance #costofliving Will Hutton is a leading political economist, author and journalist. Throughout his career, he has gone from being an investment banker in the City, to holding the Economics editorship of the Guardian and BBC2 Newsnight and the Principal of Hertford College Oxford. Daniel Susskind is an associate member of the Economics Department at Oxford University specialising in growth and the impact of AI. His most recent book Growth: A Reckoning challenges the way we think about growth. Richard Kibble is a Deloitte Partner and former banking executive. Abby Innes is an Associate Professor in Political Economy at the LSE focusing on how the UK’s economy mirrors the Soviet Union. Her work blends the philosophy of science, economics, and history. Hosted by the BBC's Roger Hearing.
