Yet one newly built home—surrounded by ashes and charred foundations—stood almost untouched. How did it survive when its century‑old neighbors didn’t? __Special Thanks__ - Evan Montgomery — co-producer - SOM — filming location (www.som.com) __Key Points__ - Why Pacific Palisades is a textbook wildland‑urban interface (WUI) and how its street grid, vegetation, and topography turned into fuel. - The architect’s radical design moves: 30‑foot defensible space, board‑formed concrete fences, no eaves, Class‑A roof, sealed vents, and an almost airtight envelope. - Trade‑offs no one talks about—historic charm lost, windows that stay shut, yards that trade grass for gravel. - California’s Chapter 7A wildfire code (2008‑) vs. older houses, plus the zoning loopholes and “like‑for‑like” rebuilding rules that keep entire districts vulnerable. - What other fire‑prone regions (Ventura County, post‑2019 Australia) are doing to blend resilience with neighborhood character—wider streets, strategic landscaping, buried utilities. - The big question: Should we rebuild exactly as before, retrofit piecemeal, or rethink entire communities when the next blaze is only a matter of time? __Membership__ Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYAm24PkejQR2xMgJgn7xwg/join __About the Channel__ Architecture with Stewart is a YouTube journey exploring architecture’s deep and enduring stories in all their bewildering glory. On the 80th anniversary of victory over fascism, Yanis Varoufakis reminds us: fascism wasn't defeated by flags or generals—but by millions of ordinary people, united in radical solidarity across borders. The Third Reich fell, but the world that birthed it never truly changed. Fascism morphed. It was repurposed by the victors to crush liberation movements from Greece to Vietnam. And today, it’s rising again—in Gaza’s ruins, in Europe’s militarised borders, in the suits of demagogues and the silence of so-called democracies. We must not simply remember. We must organise. Mobilise. Dream bigger than them—again. Human Sciences 101 — Scope, Limits & What We Really Learn from Studying Ourselves TOK Human Sciences - Scope Visual organizer to accompany video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WoNKC3b9909DmvybycV-QmW-jZThRqjo/view?usp=drive_link Why are economists, anthropologists, psychologists — and now data scientists — all chasing the same mystery: us? In this crash-course we unpack the scope of the human sciences: What qualifies as a human science and why literary insight isn’t the same as statistical evidence. How systematic, evidence-based, generalizable research can still grapple with reflexivity, complex causation and ethics. When predictions work (Indian wheat yields) and when they wobble (pandemic models, 2016 elections). The power of aggregate patterns (insurance, tweet sentiment) versus individual unpredictability. Why disciplinary silos slow solutions—from the opioid crisis to climate policy—and why “tri-lingual” researchers are the future. Whether we can speak of laws of human behavior (loss aversion, Weber–Fechner, supply & demand) and how context keeps them flexible. How funding and politics shape what gets studied, citing the Sugar Research Foundation and modern climate-tech debates. By the end you’ll have a toolkit for spotting strong evidence, hidden assumptions and stakeholder pressure in every claim about human behavior. 🔔 Subscribe for more Theory of Knowledge deep dives. 💬 Comment: Which human-science insight has changed how you see the world? 0:00 Why study humans scientifically? 0:49 Defining “human science” — systematic, evidence-based, generalizable 2:17 Situated insight vs. scientific abstraction 3:36 Three pillars: systematic study, falsifiability, generalization 4:49 Probabilistic prediction — 2016 election & pandemic models 6:34 Complex causation & reflexivity (Hawthorne effect) 7:57 Measurement error, dishonesty & ethical limits 9:00 Natural experiments: getting causal clues without RCTs 9:54 Replication crisis & reforms (pre-registration, open data) 11:03 Aggregate patterns: tweets, insurance, bike-lane heat maps 12:26 Disciplinary silos vs. “tri-lingual” scholars 14:04 Can there be “laws” of human behavior? 15:53 Supply-and-demand, Weber–Fechner & loss aversion 17:11 Context matters: elasticity, culture & expertise 18:01 Funding, politics & the sugar-vs-fat controversy 19:02 Using human-science insights ethically & wisely 20:14 Final reflection — how will you apply this imperfect toolkit?
When the Observer Changes the Experiment — Perspectives & Bias in the Human Sciences Visual organizer to accompany video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HOStnlR-KoUJ9h4LuzK1X_HEIH3J1jtL/view?usp=drive_link How do you study humans without your own humanness getting in the way? In this episode we test five tough questions about perspective in psychology, economics, anthropology and health research: Can a researcher’s own diary count as data? Auto-ethnography and a 2024 study on Long-COVID empathy fatigue. Is the observer effect escapable? From the Hawthorne factory to blind field-experiments and remote-sensing ethnography. Money, belief & bias: Sugar vs. fat, opioids, and why transparency beats wishful thinking. Paradigm duels: Alzheimer’s amyloid hypothesis under fire and how theories win—or erode—over time. Safeguards that actually work: Pre-registration, massive replications and even A.I. “pattern sniffers” for dodgy data. How Do We Really Study Ourselves? — Models, Methods & Blind-Spots in the Human Sciences TOK Human Sciences Methods and tools Visual organizer to accompany video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EANPHS11VErLTEThaj3QtV_vYIImu8Vf/view?usp=drive_link Description From economic nudges that boost tax payments to ethnographers living decades in Brazilian favelas, the ways we study people are as diverse as humanity itself. In this episode we unpack the toolkit of the human sciences—psychology, anthropology, economics and beyond—asking: Why do simple models sometimes move real-world behavior yet miss the mark when people react back? How do surveys, RCTs, ethnographies and big-data “digital traces” complement (and contradict) one another? What hidden assumptions shape our findings, from “rational actors” to “universal morals”? Can quantifying everything backfire (Goodhart’s Law), and why did #MeToo show the power of stories over stats? What does the replication crisis teach us about rigor, transparency and ethics in studying living, breathing societies? Whether you’re a student wrestling with TOK, a data-driven policy maker, or just curious how knowledge about humans is built, this deep dive will sharpen your critical lens. On the 3 September 1939, the UK Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain addressed the nation on BBC Radio. Hitler had been given an ultimatum: withdraw from Poland by 11am that day or the UK would formally declare war on Germany… it was 11.15. Chamberlain’s words would have echoed through the halls and galleries of the British Museum, his voice amplified by the emptiness of the vast rooms. The galleries were closed to the public, and even if visitors had turned up, there wouldn’t have been much to look at. Museum staff had been evacuating the collection since 7am on 24 August, and in just eight days (they took Sundays off) the team had already managed to evacuate over 150 tonnes of material. Join Nick Harris, as he pitches you a display case he would like to see installed in the British Museum galleries. It tells the incredible story of British Museum staff who spent the Second World War protecting the British Museum collections from the threat of Nazi bombers - some of them armed with nothing more than a golf club and a bucket of sand. This story is obviously enormous, and had to be reduced down for the purposes of this video. If you'd like to find out more about this story, Nick thoroughly recommends reading some of the articles by Marjorie Caygill and Tom Hockenhull on the British Museum during the war. There is plenty still that hasn't been written about during this time - Museum staff working at Bletchley Park as code breakers for one. Nick hopes one day to publish on this, but encourages anyone interested to take up the mantel in the meantime. 00:00 Intro 00:57 What happened to the British Museum in WWII? 02:10 How did the British Museum Prepare for WWII? 02:24 Air Raid Precautions In Museums Picture Galleries and Libraries 03:09 Sir John Forsdyke British Museum Director and Principal Librarian 03:21 Dr Harold Plenderleith British Museum Science Laboratory 03:37 John and Harold's 4 step plan for protecting your collection from Nazi Bombers 03:56 Fire in Museums and Safehouses 04:50 Damp in Museums and Safehouses 05:10 The Beginning of Science in Museums 08:56 Priority Lists British Museum 09:50 Speed 12:07 Where did the British Museum store Objects in WWII? 14:15 Bomb Damage to British Museum in WWII 16:32 May 10-11 1941 Blitz British Museum 19:40 Nazi risk spreads 20:05 Westwood Quarry British Museum Store WWII 21:00 Sir John Forsdyke Air Raid Precaution Handbook 21:54 The Legacy of Dr Harold Plenderleith 22:30 1980s update to WWII story 23:29 Conclusion #VE80 #history #ww2

Starlink and other low-orbit internet satellite companies are pumping thousands of satellites into space each year in an attempt to cover the entire planet in internet connections. Some of these satellites have already caused issues for astronomers, and new research suggests that they might create more problems in the future with the ozone layer and, potentially, the magnetic field. I connected my Compressed Air Line to it and is appeared to run, but as soon as I put my finger over the water outlet pipe it stopped immediately and the air just blew to exhaust. Time to dismantle it and have a look at the component parts. https://www.patreon.com/keithappleton IF YOU ENJOY WATCHING THESE DETAILED TUTORIAL VIDEOS THAT I PRODUCE TO HELP BEGINNERS TO THE HOBBY, THEN PLEASE BECOME A PATRON OF MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL VIA "PATREON" AND ALLOW ME THE TIME TO MAKE EVEN MORE OF THESE SPECIALIST AND HIGHLY DETAILED TUTORIAL VIDEOS. For a while now, I've wanted to try making aluminum bars, by recycling metal cans. So I went ahead, and bought a large propane furnace. #shorts
A US mom is almost a millionaire after a video of her admitting to racially abusing a child went viral. Shiloh Hendrix was caught on camera continuing to use the N word after directing it towards a five-year-old boy she says stole from her child. She is now running a fundraising campaign on the website GiveSendGo, which has so far amassed hundreds of thousands of dollars. And on the same website there’s another high-profile campaign for Karmelo Anthony, the black teenager charged with stabbing a white boy to death at a school track meeting in April. Liberals are saying Hendrix’s campaign is a sign the post-BLM backlash and the crushing of DEI has provided a fig leaf for outright bigotry. But Conservatives are similarly enraged by the support for Anthony; an alleged murderer who has been glorified by some as a victim of a racist system. Piers Morgan is shocked to find that one of his guests - cultural commentator Lilly Gaddis - is not only supportive of Hendrix’s campaign but openly admits to using the N word on a regular basis and that she’s an ‘unashamed racist’. Alongside her on the Uncensored panel is New York Post columnist Rikki Schlott, podcaster and author Myron Gaines and author and activist Marc Lamont-Hill. Then, in a tense and hard-hitting interview, Piers is joined by Jacob Wells, the founder of GiveSendGo. Editor's Note: We chose to dip the sound for each use of the n-word to avoid causing unnecessary offence to anybody who wasn't expecting it.
