Een fabriek in Helmond verwerkte teflonpoeder voor DuPont (nu Chemours). Tussen 1996 en 2011 loostte het bedrijf PFAS-afvalwater rechtstreeks in het riool. Dit gebeurde met medeweten van DuPont, blijkt uit interne documenten van DuPont en gesprekken met voormalige medewerkers van Custom Powders in Helmond. Het afvalwater bevatte duizenden kilo’s PFOA, een nu verboden type PFAS dat schadelijk is voor het milieu en de gezondheid. Dit werd zonder behandeling in het riool geloosd, wat leidde tot verspreiding van PFAS in het milieu. Helmond is nu een van de grootste PFAS-hotspots van Nederland. De handelswijze van DuPont en Custom Powders wordt door deskundigen als ‘schandalig’ en zelfs ‘crimineel’ beschouwd. DuPont was al jarenlang op de hoogte van de risico’s van PFOA. Toch werd aan medewerkers verteld dat blootstelling aan PFOA niet schadelijk zou zijn. In 2007 liet DuPont bloedonderzoek doen bij de medewerkers in Helmond. De gemeten concentraties van PFOA waren schokkend. Een van de medewerkers had concentraties die duizend keer hoger lagen dan de norm die het RIVM als veilig beschouwt. Een andere medewerker had concentraties die 800 keer boven de veilige norm lagen. Milieuchemicus Chiel Jonker reageert geschrokken. Hij stelt dat deze waarden behoren tot de hoogste die ooit in Nederland bij mensen zijn gemeten. Helmond is inmiddels een van de grootste PFAS-hotspots in Nederland. De gemeente heeft een schadeclaim ingediend voor de kosten van de sanering. De kosten voor de sanering worden geschat op meer dan 10 miljoen euro, waarvan de overheid het grootste deel financiert. Wethouder Arno Bonte noemt de lozingen ‘schokkend’ en het handelen van de bedrijven ‘crimineel’. ‘Het lozen op het riool was volkomen in strijd met de geldende vergunningen,’ zegt Bonte. Custom Powders kon de schade niet betalen en ging failliet. Bonte kondigde aan de rekening van de sanering bij Chemours neer te leggen: ‘Dit is doelbewust de omgeving vervuilen. DuPont wist dit en het maakt het extra ernstig.’ In de video vertel Chris Morrison, ex-medewerker van Custom Powders, voor het eerst zijn verhaal. Hij werkte meer dan 25 jaar voor het bedrijf in Helmond. Morrison werd jarenlang blootgesteld aan PFAS zonder het te weten. ‘In eerste instantie waren we trots om voor DuPont te werken. We dachten dat we wetenschap deden die de wereld beter zou maken,’ zegt hij. ‘Uiteindelijk ontdekte ik dat we chemicaliën in de rivier hebben gedumpt. Het milieu is vervuild en ons werd niets verteld.’ Morrison kreeg twee jaar geleden de diagnose darmkanker, maar het is moeilijk te bewijzen of dit door PFAS komt. We voerden ook een steekproef uit met eieren van hobbykippen uit de regio. Vier van de zes geteste eieren bevatten PFOA-concentraties die boven de EU-grenswaarde lagen. Chiel Jonker zegt hierover: ‘Dit betekent dat er risico’s zijn. Ik zou die eieren zelf niet meer eten.’ Het RIVM adviseerde onlangs om geen eieren van hobbykippen meer te eten vanwege de risico’s van overmatige inname van PFAS. De PFAS-vervuiling in Helmond heeft een enorme impact gehad op het milieu en de gezondheid van de lokale bevolking. De gemeente heeft aangegeven dat ze de kosten van de sanering bij Chemours, de rechtsopvolger van DuPont, gaat neerleggen. De schadelijke stoffen blijven nog jarenlang een probleem voor de regio. De juridische en maatschappelijke gevolgen zijn groot. Zembla blijft onderzoek doen naar de impact van PFAS-vervuiling op de gezondheid en het milieu in Nederland. Brown Sauce: Makes: 1 Litre Prep time: 10 mins Cook time: 1 hour 10 mins Ingredients 1 tbsp olive oil 1 brown onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 thumb-sized piece fresh ginger 10 Juniper berries 1 tsp fennel seeds 1 tsp cumin seeds 6 whole allspice 1 cinnamon stick 750g tomatoes, cored, chopped 2 green apples, peeled, cored, chopped ½ cup (110g) brown sugar 2 tbsp molasses 150g medjool dates, pitted 2 tbsp tamarind puree 1 cup (250ml) malt vinegar ¼ cup (60ml) Worcestershire sauce salt and pepper Tobasco, to taste Method Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion, garlic and ginger and cook for 5 minutes, stirring, until softened. Add spices and cook a further 1-2 minutes, until aromatic. Stir in tomatoes, apples, sugar, molasses, dates and tamarind puree. Pour over vinegar and Worcestershire, mix well and bring to a simmer. Season with salt and simmer, covered, for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Uncover and simmer for a further 30 minutes. Remove from the heat and let it cool a little. Blend sauce until very smooth, then pass through a sieve. Season to taste with salt, pepper and Tobasco, then pour into a sterilised jar or bottle. #shorts #cooking #hp #sauce

It’s been almost a year since Miranda July released her hit novel, “All Fours.” The novel features a woman in her mid-40s who heads out on a solo road trip across the country, only to stop at a roadside motel 30 minutes from her home. She winds up staying there for three weeks, exploring and questioning what she actually wants and needs out of midlife, things she can’t really focus on when she’s busy being a wife, a mom and a working artist. In the motel, she redecorates the room, designs her days the way she wants to and gets in touch with her changing desires. In the past year, this book has become a touchstone for how our culture addresses women in perimenopause. It’s expanded beyond the page to a kind of movement. Soon after the book’s release, women started writing to July with their own stories. She started a Substack (https://mirandajuly.substack.com/) to keep those conversations going. People organized discussion groups all over the world called All Fours Group Chats. Hats were made. “All Fours” was shortlisted for the National Book Award, and it’s currently being adapted into a limited TV series. The paperback version of the novel will be released May 13. Rebuilding A Rustproof Landrover - Part #2. Showing the loading of the Land Rover onto a Car Transporter Truck. Now it is in my garden here in the East Riding of Yorkshire. I remove the wood burner and chimney then the initial cleanup begins. It really is a bit of a mess but it is not rusty after the 26 years since I rebuilt it. I check to see if the electrical system works.
