He took no corporate PAC money, and his campaign was supported by the Justice Democrats, Working Families Party, Democratic Socialists of America and major labor unions. A colony built on cod: We follow how the massive seasonal fishing industry of the 1500s, with its intense competition among Spanish, English, French, Basque, & Portuguese mariners in the frigid North Atlantic waters off of Newfoundland, eventually went ashore and began to construct year-round “plantations” around coves on the rugged shoreline, usually without state involvement or approval. We observe how planters, migratory fishermen, and aristocratic proprietors vied for control of the makeshift colonies in Newfoundland, leading to the emergence of a free-wheeling and hard-drinking colonial society, and ultimtately, to a cataclysmic war between France and England for control of the world’s richest fishing grounds. Studenten en starters die op de Spinozacampus in Zuidoost wonen willen dat de gemeente meer maatregelen neemt tegen het afvalprobleem. Rond de ondergrondse containers is het vaak al jaren een enorme zooi en dat zorgt ervoor dat de ratten zich er steeds openlijker vertonen. Het probleem ontstaat doordat er afvalzakken naast de containers worden neergezet. Het gaat om afval van bewoners, maar soms komen er zelfs busjes of vrachtwagentjes met afval naar de containers toe. Zakken kapotgebeten Meeuwen en ratten bijten die zakken kapot, waardoor het afval zich over straat verspreidt. Volgens de bewoners van de campus komt de afvalophaaldienst van de gemeente daarbij te weinig langs en is er te weinig controle. De bewoners vertellen dat de ratten enorm groot zijn. "Ze zijn ondertussen ook niet meer bang. Ze blijven lekker zitten en door eten als je langsloopt." Het kan nog erger: een bewoner maakte een video van een rat die recht op haar afliep en daarna op haar schoen liep. Containertuintjes De bewoners willen dat het afval vaker opgehaald wordt en dat er meer controle is op het dumpen van afval naast de bakken. Ook zouden ze graag een project met containertuintjes starten, zoals eerder in bijvoorbeeld Oost gebeurde. Het idee daarachter is dat bewoners het afval niet op die tuintjes zetten. "Dat werkt echt heel goed in heel veel wijken", zegt een andere bewoner. "We hebben de gemeente gemaild met de vraag of we dat hier kunnen krijgen. En toen kregen we een heel korte mail met: nee, die proef is afgelopen." Extra containers Stadsdeel Zuidoost laat aan AT5 weten dat er wel twee extra grote papiercontainers bijkomen en dat wordt gekeken of sommige containers verplaatst kunnen worden naar plekken die de afvalophaaldienst makkelijker kan bereiken. Ook worden er campagnes gevoerd om studenten te overtuigen om hun afval niet meer naast de bakken neer te zetten en bekijken handhavers het illegaal geplaatste afval soms om te zien of er adresgegevens te vinden zijn. De bewoners zijn nog cynisch over de maatregelen. "Dat containers verplaatst worden roepen ze al maanden. Daar heb ik nog niks van gemerkt. Maar als de afvaldiensten erbij willen komen, dan moeten ze wel komen. In this episode of Mastering Spain, I explore the fascinating history of Rioja wine, one of Spain’s most famous and important wine regions. This is an ideal introduction to the region if you are studying Spanish Wine Scholar I take you through Rioja’s development over thousands of years, from its ancient origins and Roman viticulture through the monasteries of the Middle Ages, the Camino de Santiago and the growth of the Rioja wine trade. I also look at the enormous influence of Bordeaux on Rioja winemaking during the 19th century, the arrival of French wine merchants, the development of Haro and the Barrio de la Estación, and the devastating impact of phylloxera. From there, I explore the creation of the Rioja Denominación de Origen in 1925, the challenges of the Spanish Civil War and World War II, the modernisation of the region and Rioja’s eventual elevation to DOCa status. Finally, I bring the story up to the present day, looking at modern Rioja, terroir, single-vineyard wines, local grape varieties, white Rioja and some of the winemakers helping to shape the region today. Leaf was an accomplished musician who, at the age of 10, was playing as a soloist with the Omaha Symphony Orchestra. Her sister's interest in the organ brought the organ to her attention. Once Leaf's interest in the organ was piqued, she began to focus her attention on playing the theatre organ. Jan de Bie, organisator van het Jordaan Festival, is gistermiddag overleden. Hij was al een langere tijd ziek. Dat heeft zijn goede vriend Wim Bohnenn aan AT5 laten weten. Twee ouderen zitten aan een houten tafel in een café. De man draagt een bril, een rood overhemd en een zwart jasje, terwijl de vrouw een gestreepte blazer draagt. Op de tafel staan drankjes, een notitieboekje en een kaars. De sfeer is gezellig, met buiten Jan was een oerjordanees en ook een bekend gezicht bij AT5. "Ze zeggen wel eens dat ze bij mij bekend zijn geworden", zei Jan over de vele sterren die zongen op zijn Jordaan Festival, dat sinds 1975 op de Appeltjesmarkt werd gehouden.
