Een nieuw kunstgrasveld blijkt een hoofdpijndossier bij voetbalclub WV-HEDW in Oost. Het veld is aangelegd in maart, maar de afgelopen maanden stapelen de problemen zich op. Sinds augustus weigeren seniorenteams nog te spelen op het nieuwe hoofdveld, want de spelers glijden uit en raken geblesseerd.  Op het oog zie je niks geks wanneer je aan de hekken staat van het hoofdveld bij WV-HEDW op sportpark Middenmeer. De gemeente heeft als grondeigenaar flink in de buidel moeten tasten en met resultaat, zo lijkt het. Er ligt een strak, helder groen en hagelnieuw kunstgrasveld. Maar seniorenteams, die lopen er met een boog omheen. In eerste instantie was het hobbelig, maar toen de kinderziektes verholpen leken werd het hardnekkige probleem duidelijk. Spelers gleden uit, tegenstanders klaagden over de staat van het veld en tijdens trainingen raakten voetballers geblesseerd.  Voorzitter Ronald Nijsen noemt het een hoofdpijndossier, terwijl hij over het hoofdveld wandelt. "Alleen ik ga niets voordoen, want ik heb twee kunstknieën, dus ik durf hier geen draai te maken", geeft hij aan. Het is een ingewikkelde periode voor zijn club. Hoewel de junioren nog wel op het veld kunnen spelen, is de planning van de wedstrijden en trainingen van senioren een logistieke uitdaging.  Tim Correia is speler van het eerste elftal van de zaterdag. Zijn teamgenoten en hij waren er na de zoveelste glijpartij in de voorbereiding op het nieuwe seizoen klaar mee. "Toen heb ik gezegd: hier gaan we gewoon niet meer op spelen. Het gaat gewoon niet en het is ook niet veilig. Er waren jongens die raakten gewoon echt geblesseerd, omdat ze uitgleden." De aannemer, Domo Sportgrass, laat weten de problemen serieus te nemen en te werken aan verbetering. Voorheen waren kunstgrasvelden altijd bezaaid met rubber korrels, maar volgens Europese regelgeving mag dat per 2030 niet meer. Daar ligt dus een uitdaging volgens de aannemer, want de normen zoals demping en hoe een bal rolt moeten precies hetzelfde zijn, terwijl de ondergrond deels is veranderd. "Bij deze velden komt er alleen nog zand in. Dus we zijn ons als kunstgrassector aan het ontwikkelen, we zitten dus ook in een transitie. Tegelijkertijd moeten gebruikers het verschil ook gaan omarmen en eraan wennen." WV-HEDW heeft 111 teams, waarvan er 80 op zaterdag voetballen. Dat betekent dat er veel mensen op de been zijn, die vaak voor of na hun wedstrijd op het terras kijken naar de selectieteams die op het hoofdveld spelen. Correia: "We hebben laatst de derby tegen JOS op dat bijveld moeten spelen, wat een prima veld is, maar dat is wel een andere sfeer dan het had kunnen zijn. Dus dat is wel jammer." Er stonden volgens de voorzitter 600 mensen langs de lijn, maar de tribune langs het hoofdveld bleef dus leeg. Mensen stonden zij aan zij langs het veld, maar konden daar ook hun drankje niet drinken. Dat scheelt ook in de baromzet.  Hoelang de problemen nog zullen duren is onduidelijk. De gemeente is eigenaar van de grond en onderhoudt het contact met aannemer Domo Sportsgrass die het veld heeft aangelegd. De club kaartte het probleem dat seniorenteams er niet meer op wilden spelen op 1 augustus aan. Een onafhankelijke test bewees hun onvrede. De aannemer deed enkele aanpassingen, maar desondanks is het nog niet opgelost. De reden van het gladde veld is overigens ook nog onduidelijk, terwijl de club al eerder twee andere velden van deze aannemer heeft laten aanleggen. Daar zijn geen problemen geconstateerd, maar bij deze nieuwere versie is dat dus wel zo. Een nieuwe ingreep volgt binnenkort. "De aannemer krijgt nog een kans om dat te doen, hopelijk op korte termijn", aldus voorzitter Nijsen. "Eind volgende week is mij verteld. Ik ben Feyenoordfan en hoop is soms uitgestelde teleurstelling weet ik, maar ik hoop dat het dan wel goed is. Anders hebben we echt een probleem." De aannemer geeft aan aankomende week inderdaad langs te gaan bij WV-HEDW. "Als we een bepaalde hoeveelheid zand aanbrengen dan gaat de grip omhoog. Dus samen met de gemeente hebben we afgesproken dat we dat zullen doen. Dan moet de vereniging er weer op gaan spelen om te ervaren of het verbeterd is." De gemeente houdt de aannemer verantwoordelijk voor de problemen en dus zijn de kosten voor het herstel voor het bedrijf. Dat gaat om enkele tonnen. Fadia fled Afghanistan at 16, survived a dangerous journey through Iran and Turkey, and spent a year at the Ritsona refugee camp in Greece before eventually reaching Germany. Around five years later, she returns — only to find the gates still closed to her. Today, Fadia volunteers with ROSA, a charity that creates safe spaces for women in refugee camps around Athens. Her return to Ritsona is both personal and political: access to the camp is tightly controlled, and journalists are routinely denied entry. When our team applied for permission to film inside, our request was denied. What we found outside the gates — and what Fadia carries with her — tells its own story. After the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021, millions fled the country fearing persecution, violence, and severe restrictions on women's rights. Greece remains one of the EU's main entry points for asylum seekers, recording over 55,000 applications in 2025 — the highest number per capita in the European Union. Many people spend months or years in reception centres like Ritsona, waiting for their cases to be decided. Greece's Migration Minister has publicly stated the ministry is "not a hotel" for migrants, reflecting a broader shift toward restrictive asylum policies across Europe. Fadia's story is one of displacement, trauma, and the slow work of rebuilding. It is also a window into a system that remains largely hidden from public view. Het Dierenopvangcentrum Amsterdam (DOA) bestaat 125 jaar. Wat in 1901 begon als een kleine opvangplek voor zieke en gewonde dieren, is inmiddels uitgegroeid tot het grootste dierenasiel van Nederland. Jaarlijks worden er zo'n 2000 dieren opgevangen die om verschillende redenen niet meer bij hun baasje kunnen blijven. Het Amsterdam van de vroege 20e eeuw wemelde van de zwerfhonden- en katten. Veel waren gewond, ziek of vermagerd. In 1901 besloten acht mannen iets te doen voor dieren die hulp nodig hadden. Zij richtten de Asyl – Bewaarplaats voor Noodlydende Dieren op, wat uitgroeide tot het huidige DOA. Het eerste pand zat in de Wiegelstraat, tegenwoordig bekend als de Saffierstraat in de Diamantbuurt. De opvang verplaatste in 1927 naar de Polderweg in Oost. De eerste decennia van de dierenopvang waren niet zonder moeilijkheden. Tegenslagen als de Spaanse griep en de twee wereldoorlogen maakten het niet makkelijk. Toch kwam DOA, naar eigen zeggen, altijd weer op zijn pootjes terecht. Pas in 2007 verhuisde het asiel naar zijn huidige locatie. Een groot modern pand aan de Ookmeerweg in Osdorp. Het grootste asiel van Nederland bevat dierenhotels, buitenparken, trimsalons, ruimtes voor gedragtherapie en zelfs ruimtes voor dierenfysiotherapie. Modernisering Wat begon met acht dierenliefhebbers, is uitgegroeid tot een team van zo'n 540 mensen, onder wie zo'n 400 vrijwilligers. Hondenverzorger Annelies Frantsen werkt al achttien jaar bij DOA: "Ik wilde altijd al met honden werken. Wilde vroeger een hond, maar mocht niet van mijn ouders. Nu heb ik er gelukkig twee." In die 125 jaar is er logischerwijs veel veranderd. Waar het asiel ooit vooral bedoeld was om zwerfdieren van de Amsterdamse straten te behandelen, heeft de stad tegenwoordig bijna geen zwerfdieren meer en worden er ook dieren uit andere delen van Nederland opgevangen. Hoewel er veel dieren binnenkomen, vinden ook veel dieren een nieuw baasje. "Soms wordt een dier binnen twee weken geadopteerd en soms wel meer dan een jaar. Maar op ieder potje past een deksel", zegt kattenverzorgster Noor van Gennep. "Vroeger kregen de dieren niet eens naam", vertelt Noor. "Het was een stuk minder persoonlijk. We kijken nu naar de karakters van de dieren en proberen een passende match met een nieuwe eigenaar te maken." Ook de manier van werken is in de afgelopen jaren gemoderniseerd. Zo houden verzorgers op een app bij hoe vaak ze worden uitgelaten en hoe ze zich gedragen tegenover verzorgers en andere dieren. Elk dier met sociale problemen wordt gemonitord door gedragstherapeuten, waardoor de passende zorg kan worden gegeven. Helemaal happy Een vrijwilliger staat in een van de hokken een kattenbak schoon te schrobben: "Ik ben met pensioen en werk hier al negen jaar als vrijwilliger. 's Morgens denk ik altijd: waar ben ik aan begonnen? Maar 's avonds als ik wegga, heb ik altijd een big smile en ben ik helemaal happy." Hoewel er in 125 jaar veel is veranderd, draait het bij DOA nog altijd om hetzelfde missie: dieren in nood opvangen en ze helpen aan een nieuw veilig thuis. Noor: "We zijn helaas nog heel hard nodig en dat zal ook nog wel heel lang zo blijven.
